I must be in the minority because I love to sit through dance recitals! I could see 7 hours worth! I used to dance and perform and did recitals when I was younger.

Add me to this club:thumbsup2 My DD10 is in a dance company and I can't get enough of the recitals (we have 3 performances in one weekend) and I love the competitions! But I also understand that it is not for everyone and I always give my family members the opportunity to pass on that year's recital. But they all come and some even come to competitions soon.

Our studio does a Dad's Dance but it's completely not what you think. Dads sign up and practice their own routine for about 2 months. They then perform at each and every recital. They don't dance with their daughters, they dance their own routine. It gets huge amounts of applause. It's always themed to the recital theme. Last year the recital theme was "Totally Awesome 80s" and they danced to Thriller. One year it was Disney themed and they danced to "Lost Boys" from Peter Pan. The dads do an amazing job and everyone loves it!!

That sounds awesome!

I could sit through 8 hours of a dance recital...I love dance.

That made me giggle- my DD has a one-number Quick change this year and the song is under 2:00. She exits the previous number stage left and the QC booth is stage right. I told her just start stripping stuff off the second she gets offstage but I can so see her ripping off costume pieces while still in sight in the wings. :rotfl:

Jen, I've done that! One time we had less than a minute to completely change costumes and shoes. Needless to say, as soon as I was off stage, I was ripping the costume off...I didn't care who was backstage! :lmao: Awww...those were the good old days before I messed up my knees.

LOL! We've don't even have a booth - the girls just start undressing. Everyone wears a tan leotard or tan dancer's bra though.

Even though the dancers bring their own hampers to keep backstage, there are costume pieces everywhere after the show.

My daughter dance recital thanks goodness is split in two days.
As much as I love to go watch the dance I do have a limit and 5 hours would be way past it. You deserve an award for being such a good aunt.

We had quite a few girls changing backstage. With the help of my DD and a couple of moms, they all got changed with no problem. They just kept a rack with their costumes on them. All the girls (from babies to the oldest) wear a tan body tight under all their costumes. We found that is the easiest way to handle quick changes. If they have to wear a different color pair of tights, those go on over the tan ones. Saves trying to put a pair of tights on sweaty legs (Doesn't happen when you are in a hurry:headache:).

Her Daddy Daughter dance was to a song about how fast your little girl grows up and then she is gone (not sure of the song title), but it was a tearjearker. All ages did it, up to the departing senior girls which was really touching. All the girls wore flowing white dresses. It was beautiful!

Now for those that are doing a little bit of bashing.................these kids work all year long. They practice every week for 9 or 10 months for this one performance (unless they are on a competitive team). They do not get to showcase their talents at other times during the year like an athlete on a sports team does, yet they work just as hard, if not harder.

They are committed, dedicated & disciplined. If this is what they have chosen to do & they enjoy it, do not discourage them by telling them their recital is too long or that they are going to leave after they are done performing. This is it for them.

Look at the smiles on their faces & the way their eyes sparkle when they are on stage & then please tell yourself that you can give up a few hours of your lives to support them, your children.

OK - I'm off my soapbox now.

ITA - It breaks my heart each year to watch the theatre empty out as soon as their child preforms. I always try to encourage people to stay and watch the entire performance as their little ones will soon enough be in multible numbers throughout the recital. I believe when the little ones see the older students it gives them inspriation to become better dancers. Not to mention a lot of the older students are jr instructors and class demonstrators whom they look up to.

Our performance also is just around 2 1/2 hrs. which includes intermission.

I have been with the studio from the day my DD started when she was 2 1/2 , now my DGD just finished her 2 yr. This would make it 26 yrs. Melsmice I am sure we come across your studio on the competition circuit as we are from WNY also.

OK now I'm going to step down from my soapbox

Wow.......good for you for being in the "dance circuit" for so long!

If you're from the WNY area I'm sure I'm familiar with your studio. Mine is actually in Tonawanda, however, I live in Lancaster.
