OMG ~ David Beckham Quits as England Captain

I know I am so upset. I am a big Becks fan so I am lets just say I am not happy. I feel he was pushed out with the crtiscm and the loss to Portugal. I really feel for him and wish it did not come to this. :furious: :sad2:

It is a shame but Beckham isnt as young as he used to be and now is the time to go. It gives the next Captain time to settle in before Euro 2008 qualifing

Time is right and he wont get the same backing without Sven. As a liverpool fan i would love to see stevie with the armband but my head says Terry for the new captain.

Did he even show up for this World Cup? He was largely invisible and clearly getting by on his name.

That's a bit harsh, he may not be as fast & energetic as he used to be but he had a part in the goals England scored & played a blinding free kick to score against Ecuador

To be honest I've never rated him!

OK, he can do a nice long pass and a nice free kick but that's about it! He doesn't tackle, he's one footed, he very rarely takes on an opponent.

I think England play a better game without him in the team.

Initially I was never a Beckham fan, but then I saw him play live when I went to an England V Mexico match and now have to admit he is a great player (which is a huge thing to admit when he played for Man U at the time and I support Leeds!) Anyhow, he has been captain for 6 years, is considered a more senior player so I think he did the right thing to step down and give someone else a chance.

I agree with Rob, and think the timing is right and it's a good chance for someone else, despite being a Liverpool fan I would also go for John Terry.

Beckham has been a good captain and showed a great pride in playing for his country, I don't think he had a fantastic world cup but he wasn't the only one.
For free kicks and crosses there is no-one better, however the modern game requires someone with a bit more flair and the ability to go past defenders which is not David's game.
He is England through and through - many young kid's look up to him.

I agree. Beckham is getting older, it is the right time for him to hand over to someone else now. He is a fantastic footballer!!

l'm sad that David has decided to step down as Captain, its been a tough decision for him that was apparant. The role has been good for him, it has matured him into a considerate, caring guy and furfilled a life-team dream of a truely dedicated footballer.

Good luck David :thumbsup2

I think good luck to him, he's had to overcome huge personal criticism and has made a brilliant captain, but I do feel its time now for John Terry to take the armband.

I think he's done well in his captaincy and has led with confidence and support for the entire team...it's not just his football that is on a slump at the minute, Rooney hasn't scored for England for a while either....and great a footballer as Rooney can be, aside from the football he's a little thug and I don't like his attitude or his lack of sportsmanship...and yet, more often than not under Beckhams guidance, Rooney kept his cool when he has proved at club level that he can lose it. More than once i've seen Beckham take hacked off players to one side just to say "cool it" and that kinda stuff. Being captain isn't just about playing good football and I think Becks has done incredibly well for so long.

Good luck to him whatever levels he goes on to achieve!
