My mother has bought some Omega 3 capsules for me to try and take. Now, I absolutely have no idea what the stuff is, so naturally my answer is a stern NO. Don't HAVE to take them; what's the point of introducing a new thing into my system just for enhanced brain power it's not like I am stupid!! (No laughing..)

I wikipedia-ed "Omega 3", and I found these as Health Risk (please correct me if I am wrong):

  • Increased bleeding can occur if overused (normally over 3 grams per day) - How much is 3 grams anyway?
  • The possibility of hemorrhagic stroke - That's bleeding in the brain
  • Oxidation of omega-3 fatty acids forming biologically active oxidation products - (What??)
  • Increased levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol or apoproteins associated with LDL cholesterol among diabetics and hyperlipidemics
  • Reduced glycemic control among diabetics - I am assuming that means "Bad" for Diabetics; kinda worrying due to the large amount of sugar I take per day I could end up as one and the fact my mother is one too..
  • Suppression of immune and inflammation responses, and consequently, to decreased resistance to infections and increased susceptibility to opportunistic bacteria - "Bad"??

Also looked at the benefits.. It says "Cardiovascular health"; OK, that wouldn't be a bad thing due to how badly unfit I am; and a potiental cure for Autism.. Hold the phone, I don't wanted to be "Cured". (If you don't know I have Asperger Syndrome; Autism is my Cousin essentially). Not sure if my parents know about this "Benefit", but if they do I definetely will be saying NO.

I know the saying is "Parents know best" but after my dad did try to cut down on my DIS time, you can imagine how I feel about their Nags.. In one ear; out the other..

Matt, I think, as with all medicines, regular, prescription ones or alternative ones such as herbal remadies, some caution should always prevail, however if you read the possible side effects on any packet of everyday painkillers such as Paracetomol and Anadin, its enough to stop you taking them, again most are safe as long as taken as described. I dont know a great deal about Omega 3 im afraid, so not really sure on how to comment, but Im sure some dissers who do take them will be able to give you some more info.:goodvibes

Ive read about quite a few people who Omega 3 has really helped, I dont see anything wrong with giving it a try and if you are not happy then stop taking them. :)

I've heard people say they work, don't worry if my mom says shes got a gift for me, it's either vitamins or some other health thing...:sad2: Shame i would much prefer new clothes or something:lmao: o well she cares!:thumbsup2

Matt - I give my boys (13 and 10) EyeQ tablets (contains Omega3). Ashley (the 10 year old is currently undergoing diagnostic work for Austism). I started them on these about 4 years ago as I read good reports about them increasing children's attention (which they could both do with!). There are other benefits too, supposed to help eyes, brain and heart. I've read reports where parents can see a definite change in their childrens improvement in work but I have to say I can't see any improvement in my boys work but now they're taking them I daren't stop giving them the tablets 'just in case' they are making a difference - and it costs quite a bit!

You sound just like my 13 year old, he was invited to take part in a maths competition yesterday in which the brightest pupils can represent the country. He said he'd do the first quiz but no way was he going to do any more than that as it was his life and he could do what he pleases!!!! He's also told me its nothing to do with me what options he chooses for the next two years study. Be gentle with your Mum, she's got your interests at heart. Sometimes doing the best for your children seems to get thrown back in your face and as a parent I can confirm your kids can hurt you like no one else.

get your mum to compromise if you really don't want to take them! ask her to cook you at least 2 nice peices of salmon a week instead - much better for you than any 'supplement'.
I suspect her real motive is to strengthen you up, you're hopefully off to uni soon and students health is diabolical, hence the susceptibility to awful diseases like meningitis.
either way, seafood, fish products and sea products are the healthiest things you can eat.

I do give my 2 DD's Omega 3 tablets everyday, but now everything seems to have it added anyway in bread, milk, margarine. Doctors are now recommending it to pregnant women to increase the brain power of the baby. It's probably just the THING at the moment and we will all be told to take some other supplement next year!

The best way to get more Omega 3 is to eat Fish dosen't matter if its fresh or from a tin, give it a go if you can Theres nothing like philchards, sardines or mackrel on toast .
:cool1:

and a potiental cure for Autism.. Hold the phone, I don't wanted to be "Cured".

Do you know Matt - this has really had me thinking. If my children devleoped Autism or Asperger I would be searching the internet for "a cure". Having read this single sentence it's made me realise that we really are what we really are. We shouldn't try to change people into who we want them to be. I honestly never thought that the people we try to change might actually want to stay the way they are. I'm sure this should be a thread of it's own but Boy have you just made a BIG penny drop. If I never learn anything else from the Dis boards I will never forget that!

Matt why does your mum want you to try them?? Have you asked her?

Hey guys.. This morning my mother put out some pills. 1 was a multivitamin tablet, to which she has been nagging me to have for a LONG time (she reckons it'll help with A) my poor diet and B) my spots) and the other was, yup, 2 Omega 3 capsules (orange favour; yum!)

Naturally, I was against the idea, but I had to take the things anyway!!! :rotfl: My sister thinks I am being Paranoid; I think she is being Naive since she doesn't know/believe that there is Omega 3 in them. (Trust me; if she doesn't believe it that's it she won't believe it at all. I tried to tell her that almost anything with the word "berry" in it isn't a berry but she doesn't believe me at all!!). Non the less; I think it's had SOME effect on me..

Heart? Some improvement I think. It felt weird; almost Lighter in a way.. Brain? No improvement on power but concentration was through the roof. I got through a Maths lesson and a ICT double (most of which NEEDS concentration) OK. And.... for some reason I felt super confident today!! I was able to talk my way out of anything with grace. In fact, I managed to get through talking to the rudest ticket lady for when I needed to go on a train today OK; managed to get all my info out and get what I needed back. It felt great.. :goodvibes

Though.. Don't think there were ever be a "cure" for my Asperger Syndrome, with these things anyways, since there are some things that can't be cured by an improvement in brain power; e.g. my severe hate of queues, delays and lines. But, perhaps taking the things meant I was able to pay attention to what they said more instead of (excuse slight Anti-PC talk) drooling like a monkey.. :rotfl2:

Aww cheers. Glad I can "Inspire" someone. :goodvibes

She told me it's so I can be fully prepared for the finals in June/to improve my health. We will wait and see; hopefully we will see an improvement after being the Guinea pig for a couple of months!! :rotfl:

Matt, if they're making you feel so good and confident keep on taking them :thumbsup2

Well done Honey, for trying something against your will! I'm very proud of you, give them a further go for a week or so and report back!

You sound like my mother... :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Thanks, I shall. :)

now, Matt, I don't mind sending the odd food parcel, I don't mind wiping dirty marks off your face with the old tissue, but please, please DO NOT bring your dirty washing home!
