Olympus Evolt Series

Congratulations Pea on your new addition!

Joe, why did you have to say that about Lightroom? I purposely haven't tried the trial version because I don't want to spend any more money now!:rotfl: I know it's probably something I'll get in the future -- everybody seems to like it.

About Topaz Adjust -- why do you convert the files to TIFF before using it? I also have it, but I only use jpeg. I have to say I'm not real sure about the differences between TIFF and jpeg. I'm still trying to figure out how to edit raw files.

Last night I had the chance to use both of these. We went to a wedding and the reception was in a large room, high ceiling, and very dimly lit. During the wedding, I only used the 12-60 because we were sitting too close for the 50.

I was getting a lot of good pictures with the 12-60 using the FL-36. I then wanted to try out the 50, but it was having a real hard time locking on focus. I had read the reviews about it being slow to focus. It would hunt and then everything would be so blurry I couldn't make out anything. This was on subjects maybe 30 feet away.

I then tried it on someone sitting at our table and it did focus. But it makes me wonder just how I would use it in low light settings? That's one of the reasons I got it instead of the 35mm, but just based on last night's experience, I don't know if it's real practical in places like Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion for instance.

Today, I have a chance to use both again and I'll see if it does better in daylight.

Lynn, once I am done editing in Lightroom I've save it as a tiff file only because tiff's are a lossless format ( meaning you can continually make changes to a tiff file and not lose any image quality) .

I then import into PSP X3, do levels adj, topaz adjust, etc then save as a jpeg. If I really like the image I'll keep the RAW, tiff and jpeg files. If the image is only ok or blah I'll discard the tiff.

Thanks, Pug. Interesting experiences at the wedding. I wonder how my new lens (14-54) would have done for you. I used it a bit yesterday (in daylight) and I can't wait to see the images. But right now my Oly USB cord isn't working, I have to get another one. :rolleyes1

One of the things that intrigues me about the E30 is that reviewers report that JPEGs are highly usable. But I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. On the one hand, it'd be nice to not have to deal with RAW. OTOH, I'd probably shoot JPEG and RAW in order to reserve my right to work further on favorite pics, however, then I'd have to deal with both types of files instead of just RAW. That makes it a little tedious sometimes given the ridiculous amount of pictures I take for baseball, etc.

I had a discussion with my DS12 last night about what we're going to do as far as him taking over the 510 when I upgrade. I got this silly idea that maybe we could sell it and some lenses to help fund the new purchases. No way that's happening. :lmao: You should have seen the look on his face, lol. "You promised!" He's right, I did. So we'll keep it. (It's not like I'd get much for it anyway.) And I'll need to buy another bag (looking at options once again - for the third time) and some other stuff to go along with it. But he can keep the Slingbag 100, one of my flashes, and we'll have to decide on the lenses.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on my lenses but will have to post more later as we have some baseball fields to go landscape this morning.

Here's what I have. Deciding between kits and 18-180 for DS to keep. He'll also keep pancake (I'm not parting w/ that Sigma. :lovestruc )

Two kits 14-54, 50-150
Olympus 18-180 f/3.5
Olympus 25mm f/2.8 (pancake)
Sigma 25mm f/1.8
Olympus 14-54 f/2.8
Olympus 50-200 f/2.8

What other lenses might make sense for me in the future? Maybe something wide?

(Ann, your thoughts are welcome, too, if you're still out there!)

If you want wide, I hear the Olympus 9 - 18mm is a nice lens

Macro? Sigma 105mm f/2.8 or 150mm f/2.8

How do you like that Sigma 25mm f/1.8? I need a fast auto focus prime as the OM 50mm f/1.8 is a real pain to manually focus in low light.

Here's some thoughts from a guy that takes BORING photos! ( I'm in a funk right now and I keep taking photos of bugs, birds, flowers, etc. and it's driving my wife crazy. Something about using up her computer memory. )

This is my thoughts on next lenses...

1. Get the EC-14 extender and use on 50-200, it's cheaper than purchasing the 70-300. I believe you loose 1 f/stop but it will extend the reach to 100-400.

2. 11-22, it's approx the same size as the 14-54. This is my favorite lens!!!
If I didn't have this lens already I would get the 12-60. Here's a couple with the 11-22, I use this lens under ALL lighting conditions. It's very quick to focus and I can't recall it hunting in low-light.

E1 f/11, 1/500, ISO 100 at 11mm.

E1 f/3.2, 1/20 sec., ISO 100 at 17mm

FYI - I hear Olympus is offering their rebate incentive on various lenses from April 1 through May 31.

I pulled the trigger last week and ordered me a new Olympus E30. I can't WAIT for it to arrive!

I was watching prices and Amazon lowered it to $753 for a day or two so I grabbed it then. And picking up the two f/2.8 lenses for about half their cost recently gives me a nice set up without busting the budget too much. (I am LOVING the 50-200, OMG.)

Of course I had to pick up a new bag and some other stuff, too, so it almost feels as exciting as the first time.... :cool1:

OK.....you know this has seriously made me reconsider my previous stance to wait until the new models come out!!!

How can you beat a price like that!!! Hmmmmm.....I've got some deciding to do :rolleyes1

Come on, Joe. We can learn together! :thumbsup2 :lmao:

I figure if newer models come out that I have to have, I can always sell.

Wow! I'm happy for you! I saw that price drop. B&H still has it at $753 with free shipping. I'm interested to know your impressions of the size of the E30 compared to your 510. I honestly don't know, if I were to buy today, whether I would get the 30 or the 620. We were in Virginia last week and I took the 12-60, 50, and pancake along.

It was the first time I used the 12-60 so extensively and in different settings and it's a good focal length for me for a walk around lens. I would find the 14-42 to be too short a lot of times. However, that thing gets heavy, especially in the 90 degree heat last week there.

When I upgrade next year, I will also probably get a Pen to go along with a new body, whichever one it is. The Pen I think would be great for places like WDW and when I want to travel light.

What camera bag did you get? I recently got the Jill-E small camera bag for around town because I wanted something that didn't look like a camera bag. My Kata is getting to be a tight fit, but I do like it a lot. I'll probably sell my 6 million dollar home.

So is your son getting your 510?

Ha! Yes, my DS is getting the 510. He's happy. I like the PEN, too, but I won't be able to afford that setup for a while. I wound up giving my newer S3IS to my DD and she's happy. It seemed only fair. She reiterated she didn't want a dSLR (thankfully :faint: ), and she knows how to use the S3 since I've had one since 2006. I'll keep my older, slightly broken S3 in my purse. :upsidedow

I got the Slingshot 302. I debated about getting the 200 but that 50-200 is huge as well as my favorite (so it will be on a lot) and it will be nice to stick it in the bag without taking it off, so that made the decision for me. I'd rather have too much room than not enough. I recently took my stuff out of the Crumpler and put it back in my Slingshot 100 and it wouldn't even close. I think between the two the Slingshot has held up better. The Crumpler seems to have crumpled on itself.

I've seen some comparisons of size and it seems as if it will be quite a bit bigger. Going into this size was an issue for me. I guess I imagined I'd keep it nice and light forever. But since the addition of my newer lenses, that seems to be kind of a moot point for me now. I'm sunk, lol (and ok with it now).

I've read a ton of reviews by Olympus users over the last several months and most of them recommend going with the E30 [if given the choice between it and the 620]. I was originally wanting the E3, so the 620 wasn't really on my radar. In that case I'd just stick with my 510. This camera, from what I can tell, seems to be in many ways better than the E3 (at this point in time). If they do come out with a largely improved version of the E3, I'll have more deciding to do. But I think this will make me fairly happy for a while. Believe it or not, just with the addition of the 50-200, my pictures have improved dramatically. For the first time ever, I can batch process my DS's baseball photos. I figure they can only get better on the 30 which is supposed to have better dynamic range. We'll see. I'm a little nervous about being a newb again, but I think I know my 510 well enough that I can hopefully transfer my skills fairly easily.

UPS called last night to say they were coming today. :woohoo:

It's bluebonnet time in Texas!! DD17 (she'll be 18 on Sunday!) and DD14:

This will be the last year that I'll be able to do the bluebonnet pictures of them together. DDnearly18 leaves for college in September. In New York. :sad1:

OK....you may have talked me into it. There's a good possibility I'll be ordering my E-30 this week. :thumbsup2

I just saw on the Get Olympus Facebook fan page that Oly now has a free I Phone, Ipod Touch app available at Itunes. I just downloaded it but haven't had the chance to check it out yet.

Don't forget that if you order it from B&H you can get Bing cashback also! Not trying to talk you into it, though.;)

Beautiful pictures! (And daughters too!) There've been a few pictures of the bluebonnets on dpreview too. I might have to get down there and see them for myself sometime. I've only been to Texas once and that was around New Year's more than 30 years ago now!
