Olivia's banana bread french toast?- I found it and this is disgusting!

I'm sorry you were disappointed but I'm not sure I'd blame it on cost cutting. There's probably close to the same amount of bread in the bread pudding as the french toast but it's cut up and mixed with eggs, cream and sugar and is much more dense. Bacon is also more expensive than the Sausage but we're taking pennies per serving here.

Three big slices we were served. Enough for me and my husband. One good sized muffin wouldn't cut it. But maybe that was Disney seen and greed kicked in. Kinda like the Big Ohana that used to be served at Kona for breakfast, but got cut out. 🤔

Isn't that basically what hummingbird cake is? I know there is pineapple in there too, though.

No idea. Never heard of hummingbird cake.

Banana bread doesn't typically have pineapple in it in my experience.

Hummingbird cake is a banana pineapple cake with cream cheese frosting. It's popular in the South. It's a featured dessert at Chef Art Smith's Homecoming at Disney Springs.

I'm saying banana bread with cream cheese frosting is one step (the pineapple) away from being hummingbird cake.

Cause banana bread is cake, after all.

Banana bread French toast is a disgusting creation regardless.

Banana bread is NOT bread. It's cake. So you're taking CAKE, and dipping it in a batter of eggs and milk to make it even more dense and then frying it in more butter? It always gets burned because banana bread is full of sugar, and sugar burns on a hot griddle. It's CAKE.

The bread pudding is a far better approximation of what French toast should be. I'm guessing they just added some bananas on there with the cubed bread.

Although that serving size is a joke for breakfast.
Actually, banana bread is a quick bread in baking terms. Quick breads include muffins, biscuits, scones, cornbread, and quick loaf breads like banana bread and zucchini bread. It is in between a cake and a bread.

I'm really disappointed about that dish. I haven't showed it to my daughter yet. She asked about it the other day.

I suspect DLgal is considering taste and texture over technicalities such as you mention.

In terms of sugariness, I'm inclined to agree that banana bread is cake, because it's similar in sweetness and texture to carrot cake. You could even insist it IS cake due to banana bread being made from a batter as is cake.

It's never quite made sense to me to call banana or zucchini bread breads when they taste more like cake than biscuits and scones.

I haven't had French toast in many many years but shouldn't it be on the lighter side? Banana bread seems like an odd choice for French toast anyway since it's very dense. It's certainly not something I could eat first thing in the morning. The second photo looks more like my style but I wouldn't pay $16 for it.

They call it that because of the method of how it is prepared. There is nothing that says that quick breads are only savory. I think that too many get hung up on the terminology and want it to fit into what they think it should be. But reality is that everyone knows what banana bread is. If you started calling it banana cake, it would confuse most people.

Some of y’all work yourselves into fits over the weirdest stuff, I swear. Literally a piece of bread lol
I think the difference is that they used actual slices of banana bread and treated it as french toast. This new one is a bread pudding. They are 2 different things. People are allowed to like one and not the other. After all, it is all just "food" so what's the big deal, right?

Of course people can prefer one or another. But to continue to be "really disappointed" about a restaurant dish days later is hilarious.

It's full of sugar, eggs and milk. It's cake. I appreciate the technical classification, but let's be honest here. Muffins are basically cupcakes as well. My husband refuses to call them muffins. He likes to tease me when I "have cake for breakfast."

Bread pudding is pretty much just baked French toast. The ingredients for the two are identical. Bread, eggs, milk, sugar. I made some bread pudding yesterday. The only appreciable difference is that one is a slow cooked baked custard and one is fried on a griddle.

I'm still waiting for the scallops to return. Those Seven Mile Scallops with Polenta & Asparagus were so good!

I agree with that when you use regular bread, that they are close. French toast doesn't have the custard, just an egg wash. But I believe the menu item that we were talking about actually used banana bread and treated it like french toast. This new item doesn't seem to do that, but I could be wrong.
