I'm cooking rice for dinner as a side dish and the recipe calls for olive oil. I don't have any. Is there a subsitute that would work just as well? I do have vegetable oil and butter.

Thanks in advance if you can help:)

with rice, I'd do butter....

its probably just to keep the rice from sticking with the healthiest option possible....but some butter should do just fine.

I guess you could use vegetable oil... but it won't have the flavor of olive oil. It wont' be too bad though. I wouldn't use butter.

Yes, you can use vegetable oil or butter as a substitute. No problem :thumbsup2

Did we clear that up for you???? :rotfl2:

I would chose the butter. Did I break the tie?

We are all correct!!

I make rice at least 4 times a week including jasmine rice, basmati rice, goya, canilla, store brand long grain rice, etc.

My first response was simple, here is further explanation.

DS only eats plain rice- it can be any variety, but must be made with no oil, butter, or spices.

If I make rice following the recipe and adding some fat DH prefers olive oil or canola oil, DD prefers butter.

If I am coating the rice in a frying pan before adding the liquid, I prefer butter or olive oil because they add more flavor than canola oil.

More important than whether or not you add fat is paying careful attention to cooking time and cover on/off instructions :)

Maybe she can help:confused3

Hi, my name is Ashley and I can't cook rice to save my life....

Everytime I cook rice it ends up being too mushy or too crunchy- tonight it was too crunchy, so I ended up making fettucini with parmesan cream sauce instead. I made pork chops to go with it. It was really good!

Thanks for the help guys, even though I didn't actually end up eating the rice.....:rolleyes1
