I have a college son who has been having issues with school work. He's had these issues for years but with good health insurance we are addressing it on our own now. He recently had a full academic evaluation and it's likely they are going to find he has ADD. It's also quite possible he will go on meds. He has some issues with depression. I'm concerned about the medications he will be placed on as he will likely just begin them when he's going back to school. Because he's 18 it's not likely I'll be present when these decisions are made but he's not at that point in life yet where he'll ask the right questions or bring these concerns up to the dr. I'd really like to be present for part of the decision making process. My son knows what he feels but not what others observe.
I'd like to give the dr a call and say although I don't want to discuss private details this is a concern of mine.
Are there ADD meds that are better for folks who tend to get depressed. He's going back to school for his soph year after a very rocky frosh year. He will have some issues going on that we are concerned about. For somebody with strong concentration and organizational issues can the medications really help? We are also trying to find a counselor for while he's at school. Can counselors give assistance in finding ways to cope with school work with this disability?
