Hey Girls - I wanted to thank you for all your help on this issue! I have pretty much found what I needed, and I think things are going to work out well :)
Thanks again!!

I had a Catholic issue too, albeit different from yours, but when I posted my questions here a few months ago someone suggested that a priest who is part of the "Old Catholic Church" would be able to perform a Catholic ceremony on Disney property.

However, what I found was that while they are physically and legally allowed to do that, Roman Catholic churches do NOT recognize catholic ceremonies performed by "Old Catholic Church" priests as valid or real. You will be legally married. I don't know if regular Catholic churches do recognize it as a real wedding.

Our situation was that DH (raised Roman Catholic) and I (a former Protestant Sunday School Teacher) are both spiritual (we believe in God) but we are not religious (we don't believe in church and religion). BUT his mother (very traditional Polish Roman Catholic) was seriously distraught because her only child was going to have an "invalid" marriage. Some of our Roman Catholic invitees, declined our invitations after finding out that the ceremony was not going to be in a Catholic Church, fearing for their souls ( I mean this very literally!!!).

One of the other suggestions I got from this board is that you can have a Catholic ceremony or marriage blessing performed at a church in your home diocese, some time before or after your Disney wedding. You can invite 1000 people or it can just be you, your DF and 2 witnesses. By doing this, you will have two legal ceremonies, but one will be "valid" or recognized in the Catholic Church. And I believe there are a number of disbrides who have done this. I think Maria (malea) did it.

Depending on your situation, this would probably be your best bet.

My friend had a similar problem, though not at Disney. Her parents were adamant that they get married by a priest, but they didn't want to get married in a church. They found a retired Catholic priest who performed her ceremony outside at the same place where their reception was held.
Apparently a bunch of people liked the priest so much that they googled him and he came up under 1-800-Rent a Priest. :lmao: :rotfl2:
So maybe you could try that?

Thank you so much for your help! This is an issue more for us than for our family, and we aren't crazy-religious...we just would prefer to have a Father marry us. I will have to look into the Old Catholic Church with my fiancé, but it is something great to know about. You guys really have answers to everything here on this board!!
:worship:

Actually, I just looked at the site and it really seems quite helpful (surprisingly). :rotfl:

They have a lot of retired Catholic Priests listed in central Florida and according to canon law, "Once a priest, always a priest." Therefore, married priests are not "ex" or "former" priests, they are still priests. In fact, Canon Law says they cannot refuse to ministry to someone who asks.

I guess I'll talk to my fiancé and go from there...I would have never even thought of a retired priest!!

If you aren't looking for recognition from the Catholic church, I think a retired priest would be easier than the Old Catholic Church. What I read about the latter, seemed a little complicated.

DH & I are both from Catholic backgrounds (me moreso than him). We had Rev. Tim Herring do a Catholic ceremony in the Wedding Pavilion. Essentially he was "pretending" to be a priest. lol Of course the marriage is not recognized by the Catholic church, but if you walked in on our ceremony you'd never know! We do plan on getting it blessed by the church after our little booger is born.

HTH!

We did look into him - I just didn’t like the idea of a Baptist minister "pretending" to do a Catholic ceremony. We don't care if it is recognized by the Catholic Church at the moment (eventually we’ll do it in a church)...but we do want to be married by a priest if possible. Thank you for the advice :goodvibes

Yeah it is kinda weird pretending to be a priest...I mean he didn't wear like the robes or anything, but I see what you mean! Good luck!

Geancarlo and I are going to do the exact same thing:goodvibes
