Hi all!
I was refered to come post a question here as I may get more answers. Flame me if you will, I know I might be a little TOOOO touchy on this one but I want to ask. This summer is my first with Moderate to severe asthma  (depending on the pollen count) In a single year I went from using my albuterol emergency inhailer once ot twice all summer to once or twice a week lately. Has anyone had any problems carrying meds, having attacks, or the other fun things of being asthmatic in WDW? I know my trip in August (hopefully) is a long ways away and I may be scaring myself for nothing but knowledge is power. :wizard:

My daughter suffered asthma attacks on tower or terror and on mission space, so I would avoid those rides. In mission space, specifically, she felt as if the air was being sucked right out of her and she nearly passed out. she has moderate to severe asthma and we now carry not only her inhaler but a portable nebulizer with us at all times. We carry it in the park with no problem,we just tell the securtiy check that it is medical equipment.

Thanks, I am hoping to have a better idea of how my asthma is going by the time we hopefully leave for WDW but it is always reassuring to hear from others. Thanks again!

First off if your now using your emergency inhaler that often then you need to be using a preventitive med. Then between using your preventitive med daily and using your albuteral when needed you should be fine.

I'm on two controller meds but still needed the albuterol twice this past week. I think I'll be fine, I just wanted to know if there were any problems carrying med in the parks, loosing them on rides, anything in particular causing attacks in most any asthmatic, and such. Thanks for the advice and reassurance though.

Security probably sees lots of inhalers. I know they saw mine last summer in my backpack and it didn't seem to concern them.:)

I rode the "tame" side to Mission Space last summer with no problem as an FYI.

Here are my tips:

Avoid alcohol beteen the hottest part of the day, 2:00-6:00 pm.

Drink LOTS of water. I drink at least a bottle an hour between 11:00 and 6:00 pm.

If possible, visit the parks in the morning and evening, and swim or nap during the hottest part of the day.

Avoid carbonated beverages, the CO2 can mess with your breathing.

Talk to your doctor about using a nebulizer. When I'm going to be in a situation with a lot of potential triggers, I do a prophylactic neb treatment before I leave the house or hotel room.

You might even consider a Medrol pack for the trip. That would possibly help contain/prevent any asthma triggers.

Can someone tell me if there are any bad times of the year to go for sufferers, mostly pollen wise. We are from Australia and we know which times of the year are going to be bad for my boyfriend, I am unsure about what it is like there in America.

It entirely depends on what your allergies are to. You can be allergic to one type of pollen and not another. Because things bloom year round here, there is pollen in the air year round. March-May are the worst for me.

It totally depends on the individual. We moved to Florida because the heat and humidity actually help my son's asthma.

My son also has trouble on Mission Space. Although he didn't tell me until he rode it a dozen times or so. He said there is one point where it goes so fast, it just takes him breath away.

He also experiences this at one part of the Kraaken ride at Sea World.

Bad time of the year for pollen? Right now! This is the worst year I have had in as long as I can remember. Currently on my second round of steroids in a month. Maybe it has something to do with our extreme lack of rain and the wildfires around. Air quality is horrible. I wouldn't suggest the spring at all.

Strange enough, summer may be a good time....with almost daily rain things wash away.

As someone else answered, it really depends on your personal trigger. Winter is fine for most people I know but my mother is miserable with her allergy to orange blossom.

Which plants are the triggers?

I had been doing OK until yesterday when the hazey smoke from one of the wild fires literally came rolling into our neighborhood. I was tight all night last night, woke up a couple of times and needed my inhaler. :sad2:

I don't know what time of year you all typically have those wild fires, but that is one of the few times I've had really bad problems with my asthma in WDW.

I don't have any asthma issues other than that specific to WDW. My only problem is the hotel rooms, if there has been a smoker or a pet in the room, I'm in trouble.

Also never had any security issues with any medications brought into the parks.

I found my asthma completely vanished at WDW but when it is bad at home I find singulair helps along with all the usual inhalors.
