Old Passport returned?

DD has just received her new passport. Great service, just 2 weeks from posting it off.

However, we haven't received her old passport back. Do they still do this as it has always arrived before the new one in the past?

It depends whether you paid the extra £3 for secure delivery.

If you didn't then they send them out in second class mail.

No I didn't pay for the secure delivery as it was only her old passport which would have been cancelled before it was posted and no other documents.

I think the passport office must have spent longer processing in the past as the previous old passports came back quite a while before the new ones arrived.

I've just renewed my DD's passport. The old one arrived 3 days after the new one.

I think it also depends on the office it is sent to.

I renewed two at Durham and the old passports came back within 2 weeks at the same time as the new ones.

I then renewed my DD at Newport. The new passport was back within one week but the old one took 4 weeks. I had actually paid for secure delivery but they "mislaid" the documents!

That reminds me that we did have a really long wait for our passports last time. I had used check and send but the person at the post office hadn't noticed I'd missed a complete section on each of the kids' forms. That meant I had to deal directly with Belfast passport office to get it all sorted.

(I did get a refund of the check and send fee from the PO but their comment was, "We are not experts." Which made me wonder what service I had paid for. I never use that service now as online service seems easier.)

P.S. While typing this the old passport has just plopped through the letter box.
