We replaced our bedroom set in the fall. Since then, we've had a kingsize waterbed and dresser sitting in the garage.

I have tried to donate it to some of the charities but they will not take it. I have called the township and local thrift stores, they will not take it either. I have asked just about everyone I know if they know of anyone who is interested. And, I have placed an ad in the local paper. Again, no luck.

We need to get it out of the garage. DH just wants to put it out in the trash. First off, I'm not sure they will take it. Secondly, I have a hard time just throwing it out -- I know there has to be someone who could use it.

I don't want to have a garage sale -- it's the only item I'd have to sell. I'm not into ebay so I don't think that's an option either (besides I could never ship it). Does anyone in my area want it? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

What do you do with old furniture?

We had the same problem in Oct when we got new bedroom furniture.....we called Catholic Charities, (they didn't have a driver out our way for months), Salvation army didn't want it either......it had to be in perfect condition for them to take it......if it was in perfect condition, we would have kept it. It wasn't in bad shape, just one of the drawer fronts was off each dresser, something someone could fix with a nail or two. I thought someone would be glad to get it, especially if they had nothing. We ended up putting it outside near the road, and the mirror disappeared, but we had to call our trash pickup company to come and get it.

Put it out at the curb the day before trash day. Odds are someone will pick it up.

When you ran your ad were you just giving it away or were you trying to sell it? I can't imagine that no one would come get it if it were free...

In our community paper, there is a 'For Free' section. All you gotta do is go pick it up. My brother did this with a bunch of wood he had and he got a ton of calls.

this week the city does a big trash pick up.....besides regular stuff......they take refrigerators....stoves....one big one per residence.....and beds and bureaurs and stuff like that......well we cleaned out the third floor apartment because we are not going to rent anymore.....and put out two full size bed frames......four bureaus ....old kitchen set......and it was alllllllll gone by nine that night....not one piece was left on our sidewalk.......this is a good way to get rid of stuff without having to go to the dump....plus someone obviously thought our trash was pretty good......:p

Why don't you post pictures and a big FREE sign on the grocery store bulletin. You could also try calling churches to see if there are any families in need, or schools, or local shelters. I hate to put stuff out for the landfill too and always try to get rid of anything that can be reused. Good for you!

How about your pastor? He might know someone who needs it. Also college bill boards might let you post, or put up a sign for you.

In one city we had someone who gathered things for foreign students to use when they arrived here. They always needed everything immaginable.

Do you have a battered women's shelter in your area? That's what I do with all my fairly decent household items, and they are happy to get them. As the woman who runs the shelter told me "These peole sometimes leave with nothing but the clothes they are wearing." You might want to try and fix the drawer frony before you do anytihng wiht it though. If someone is completely not handy, spomething like that could be off-putting if they don't think they'd be able to fix it.

If only I had room for a king-size beg

I agree with offering the set again as free in the newspaper or posting in a bulletin board with pictures at the supermarket or church.

We have a University in our area (Weslyan) and I just called the office and had them put a message in the Student Union...Free Sofa and Love Seat...It was gone in 2 days.
