Can some one explain the OKW deal to me.

We are thinking of buying into the DVC. I knwo I heard about the 15 year extension, but saw somewhere on these boards that you could buy directly from disney a 50 contract that expires in 2057? Is this true?

What exactly is the deal?

Also anyone that has been here, how is the OKW? How does it compare to some of the other resorts like the boardwalk and SSR?

Thanks

yes they are offering OKW contract and it is 96.00PP and you get the extended contract.
We like all of the DVC resorts for their own reasons.OKW we like parking in front of our villa and we like feeling like that you are somewhere tropical.

It's the only DVC without an Elevator and If your in a Studio the Ice machines are the most inconvenient location imaginable. When we needed Ice we had to go down three floors and then walk the lengh of three building to the pool house and back.

At OKW the ice machines are located in each pool laundry room and at each bus stop. There are only 3 bldgs with elevator, 62, 63, & 64. The stairs are a gentle rise for 1/2 story (about 10 steps) a landing, and then another gentle rise. If you are on the 3rd floor, you'll have 4 sets of steps and 3 landings, counting the 2nd floor landing.

All OKW contracts now available directly from Disney expire in 2057, most (probably all current) OKW resale contracts expire in 2042. So far, OKW is the only DVC resort to be extended from 2042 to 2057. SSR expires in 2054, AKV in 2057. VWL, BCV, HHI, VB, and BWV all expire in 2042.

Will the price be going up after 2-29? Earlier threads indicated that the offer to extend their OKW points goes from $15 per point to $25 per point to extend.

I dont think that will go up now I cannot say positively.I think that was for members that wanted to extend and that will probably end up being pushed to a later date the same as all the other incentves.
I suppose you could call a guide to see if they might know.
If you dont have one then I could call mine and ask for you if you would like for me to.I have to call her about something else tomorrow and I could ask her.

I LOVE OKW. Here is something I wrote for another thread recently. As for ice machines being in inconvenient locations....Why would anyone stay in a studio and have to go to an ice machine when for just a few points more you can stay in a 1 bedroom with the largest fridges in the DVC system right in your own kitchen?

OKW is like a spread out neighborhood of vacation townhomes. Each building is 2-3 stories and will include 1 bedroom/studio lock offs, 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom villas that are walk ups or walk ins from the parking are right outside your door. This gives a nice secluded vacation home feel IMO. The villas are the largest in the DVC system, and have huge master baths and very large great rooms and fully appointed kitchens with full sized appliances. There is also a complete laundry room with full size washer and dryer (not stackables). There is a large covered balcony that includes a dining table, 4 chairs and a ceiling fan. The balcony is accessed from both the living room and the master bedroom. The studios are lock offs from the second bedroom in some units, and will have 2 queen beds, a large closet, a huge full bath and a kitchenette/sink area that will include a microwave, fridge, coffe maker and toaster as well as some plastic and paper table ware. There is a small table with two chairs and a large balcony for the studio rooms as well.

There are 3 neighborhood pools on site, and a larger main pool that has a new sand castle slide. Each pool area includes a childs play area and a laundry for those who are staying in the studios (full size villas have their laundry room in the villa).

Bus service is excellent to all the parks, and there are 5 bus stops (yep with ice machines) located throughout the resort.

ITA about the value per point. For the few extra points you use for the 1 BR, the amenities you get are well worth that expenditure!

IMO, OKW is the only DVC resort where you really get that "home" feeling. It's definitely because of the layout being more like a townhouse community, rather than a hotel or condominium.

:worship: OKW!!

We've owned at OKW for 11 years and only stayed at another DVC once--SSR--even though we've checked-out some of the other hotel-based resorts.

We don't like the hotel-based DVC's. Just not our style.

Even though we liked SSR, we were "disappointed" by the size of the villa we had. We LOVE the size of the OKW villas, the balconies, the pools, etc.

Every time we pull into OKW and park outside our villa, we know we're "home!"

We just stayed at OKW in January and loved it. There were 4 adults and two small kids in the group, and having all of that extra space was so worth it. Since my parents were with us, we gave them the master, and we took the second room with two beds to share with the kids. It was nice feeling like we had some privacy since the master is down the hall. It was also great having a true dining table where we could all sit around for meals. We cooked a couple of times and it was wonderful. We love to eat out, but don't love counter service for the most part. Also with small kids it's nice to have the option to cook some quick pasta when they are cranky rather than having to go to a restaurant or pay high prices for a hot dog. I totally agree that especially at OKW, it is worth the upgrade from a studio to a 1bd for all of that extra space and a full kitchen.

I completely agree with Diane and Kathi's comments. My husband and I just added on to OKW directly through Disney because we have always LOVED OKW. If we could go back in time. We would have made OKW our home to start with, but at the time it had a much earlier expiration which wasn't very appealing to a couple in their early twenties. As soon as we found out that OKW had an extension to 2057 we jumped on it.

Because We stayed at the studio over a long weekend. Because we didn't pay a few points more we were able to go back and stay for another long weekend four my wife's birthday. I Just don't understand why they can't put an ice machine at each building.

Where would they put it? In one of the units? Maybe near a garbage closet in each building, but the cost difference of 53 ice machines versus 5 is pretty significant! That's especially true when you think of the fact that it would be for the studios only.

Maybe if they put at least on in each Circle but we were in building 37 and that's a hike to a machine no matter what you say. And I always use the ice machine even when we stay in a two bedroom.

When you first arrive at a resort I get Ice from the machine. I will not use any ice that's left in the fridge. Yuk.

I'm not knocking your resort. It was pretty. But the OP wanted to know some of the differences. Old Key West lovers talk about all the good things that makes OKW different but there are negatives. You just have to determine if the negatives will bother you or not.

It's a big deal to our family to be on a third floor room and not have a Vader. Were a bit forgetful and if you make 3 trips up and down the stairs it makes us long for a resort with an elevator.

And a convent Ice Machine is important to us. You can tell me how much I'm wrong and we don't need it, but the first thing I do when I unpack is go and get ice and put it in the freezer.

I simply love OKW we own most of our points at VWL...but we own a resale at OKW....the parking thing is a fantastic perk, and the rooms are hands down the best. There is nothing better then being able to have your whole family on the balcony...You can have a full family dinner out there. I love to take walks with the kids around the resort, or have a beer on the balcony and watch people tee off on the golf course.

I, however will not take the deal they are offering because I will most likely be residing in some place called shady meadows by the time 2042 rolls around. My kids can get a job and pay for it themselves;)

Good grief, take a chill pill LOL.We all see that you really want ice machines at every building, but thats not going to happen.
So I guess thats why they have so many diffrent resorts is because each resort is diffrent and not everyone likes the same things thats what makes the world go round.

I myself never ever use the ice machines even in a studio.I dont think theat there is that many people that do.

But if thats the only thing that people can find wrong with a resort then that is a really good thing.

Forgive me, but WHAT is a convent ice machine? Last I saw there were no convents in WDW. In fact, we find it difficult to find a good Catholic Church in the area that doesn't have to do a commercial during the Mass.

It's where the Ice stays Single and looks for a higher calling. While going out and doing good deeds. Like keeping my drink cold.

Thanks for catching my typo.

Ya'll have provided some great info on this thread....Quite frankly, the ice machine issue isn't one to me..

But, now I'm thinking of a 50 point add on at OKW for when I want a "quiet" trip. Thanks! :)
