I am going in January and have the choice between the Boardwalk Villas (1 Bedroom) or Old Key West (1 Bedroom). Any opinions?

I am really going just to relax and kick back. It's a Girls Getaway! No kids.

Thanks,

Will you be doing the parks at all? If so, the location of BWV can't be beat for walking to either Epcot or DHS. There are also entertainers on the Boardwalk at night. The Bellevue Lounge is a great spot to relax as well. There are also a fair amount of dining options at BWV, across the lake at YC/BC, or next door at the Swan/Dolphin. BWV is my home resort, and I still like it the best. I have also enjoyed all my stays at OKW as well. It is a little more laid back and is also further from all the hustle and bustle. Olivia's has good food, but Goods to Go is just so-so in my opinion. You can take the boat to DTD for shopping and dining. I don't think you can go wrong with either option. Have a great trip.

Other differences to consider between OKW and BWV:

1. Parking -- At BWV you use valet or self-park pretty far from the building. At OKW it's like garden apartments with parking right outside your villa.

2. Space -- OKW has the largest square footage per villa of all the DVC properties. It's huge compared to BWV. OKW kitchen is full-size, BWV has all the appliances crammed into a 6' x 6' square.

3. Laundry -- OKW has an actual laundry room in the villa with full size washer and dryer. BWV has the smaller stackable unit.

These are actually our two favorite resorts.
Here's how we choose:
When it's just the two of us (or even three), staying for a short trip (4-5 days), and we're flying, it's BWV. ;)
But when it is our family of five (DS23, DS22, DD15), staying for 7-10 days, and we're driving, it's OKW. :goodvibes

If you are planning on spending most of your time at Epcot and the Boardwalk establishments, then I'd stay BWV, but if you want a good relaxing trip and plan to go to all parks equally, I'd do OKW. The extra space, beautiful grounds and vacation home feel over a hotel feel make OKW our destination of choice. I don't care much for having to walk so far to all the parks. I'd rather take a bus and get dropped off at the front instead. We find we actually do the least amount of walking when we stay at OKW. LOVE the beautiful landscaping there as well. The 1 bedroom units at OKW are HUGE, and that big dining balcony/porch is our favorite. Request a water view, and you wont be disappointed!:thumbsup2

I'm glad you asked this question! I'm having the exact same debate with myself. I'm taking my elderly parents in January and actually started making a comparison pros/cons list. (Pretty anal, huh?) I'm wondering if there are other differences that are less obvious. :confused3

How old are your parents? Frankly the walking isn't going to be that big a difference either way, but some basic differences are: OKW units have low rise steps to the upper floors, while BWV has elevators. The problem is, BWV has very FEW elevators, and you end up walking endless hallways to get to them! We prefer a few stairs to the endless hallways.

The views at OKW are spectacular and will likely appeal more to older folks. (still need to know how old you are talking about) There is something so open and airy about the OKW units with all the windows and light decor and those water and golf views can be pretty amazing. For true tranquility, stay in buildings 45, 46 or 55.

Bus service from OKW is the best. There are 5 bus stops, so you are never far from one.

Thank you! That's the kind of thing I was looking for.

My parents are 86. This will be their 6th trip to WDW after they became "old." I WILL be requesting 1st floor due to medical reasons (or bldgs 62 or 63)...they don't do well with steps.

We will have a car...as they can't do buses. They have a Handicapped parking placard, so at BWV we'd be doing valet parking. I also know that parking at OKW is outside the unit except for bldg 64 and maybe a couple others.

I've stayed at BWV with my hubby, so I know what those rooms are like. We didn't have to go to the end of the endless hallway, though. This past January my parents and I stayed at BLT on the FAR end, and I have to say that I think the distance from that room to the Monorail was LONGER than the endless hallway at BWV.:lmao:

We have yet to use ECVs, but that day may be coming. So far we've been walking VERY slowly, so OKW would minimize that.

Diane...you may be DEFINITELY talking me into OKW.

When I take my parents or Inlaws we stay at OKW.... you can get a building with an elevator just let them know about the Handicap card and make sure you get a CM who understands--not in a nasty way--
I took my parents to BW once and they were not happy with all the walking--I wanted to eat at Cape May thinking they would enjoy it... they liked the food but the walking killed the whole thing.....
Don't get me wrong I like BW but it is walking on top of walking to make it worth while... In other words at other places you have a break on the bus or monorail which gives people time to get some energy back.

If you'd plan on dining or just visiting any of the other resorts, you'll be getting a placcard for the windshield of your car that will allow you to park in the respective resort parking lots. OKW will be more convenient under those circumstances since you'll be parking right outside the condo.

my parents are in their mid 80's, and havive mobilty issues (replaced knees for mom, desperately needing to be replaced knees for dad).
we rent a scooter (have heard great things about randy's - check the disabilities board for more info), and charge it in the room every night.
they both thought OKW was pretty, but didn't care for the condo look (at the BWVs, our views are never of cars, buses, or parking lots), and the that "it feels like a nursing home" (their words). in many of the buidlings, doing anything other than sitting in the room required driving or a very long walk - swimming at the main pool, getting a bite to eat, etc.
also, we tend to spend our time mostly at the parks and enjoying the resort itself - which is probably why we all prefer the BWV where there is always something to do and/or see. the bellevue lounge, BW entertainers, jellyrolls, carny games, community hall, shopping and dining are all right there. none of us have ever had a problem with the "long hallways" some speak of, and we've been staying at the BW since it opened - before we even owned DVC.

if you do stay in the room a lot, OKW definately has larger accomadations. if we were going on a no park, sleeping in trip, it is prob the resort we would choose - it is a very pretty resort, just a little too far from everything for our tastes.
hth :)

IMO there is no comparison between OKW and BWV, especially for a girls only trip without kids. The BW has a plethora of dining and entertainment options that just aren't available at OKW. There's drinks/food at Bellvue, FF, ESPN, or BIg River. Dancing and Entertainment between jellyrolls and Atlantic Dance Hall. That's not even mentioning the 5 min walk over the the BCV. To me it's a no brainer, but I'm in the minority that does feel OKW is like a retirement village.

Not all OKW views are spectacular. I stayed in building 28 once and all we saw were trees growing almost on the porch. I would specify a water view.

If you are going for a relaxing girls trip away I say OKW. The rooms are larger. More tranquil atmosphere. Close to all the clubs at DTD. Lower points if you are dvc members or renting from one. Last but certainley not least, if you are spending the day relaxing by the pool there are lots of smaller pools and the bartenders at OKW are the best in Disney IMHO.

27, 28, and 29 are exempt from spectacular views. Worst building is 29!!!

I bolded that area, because we feel exactly the opposite. We find we do FAR less walking at OKW than anywhere else. BWV and AKV are where we feel we do too much walking. DH has bad (need to be replaced) knees too, and we also visit the parks every day. OKW is so easy, since every bus stops at HH, so you are never more than a bus stop away. At BWV and AKV, it can take me 10 minutes just to get to the lobby and that's walking all the way. At least at OKW, I only have a couple of minutes to walk to the bus stop.

Tuff Choice. Both resorts are great. The Boardwalk has a great location and right next door to two theme parks. You've got lots of restaurants and entertainment within walking distance.
The Old Key West is the resort with the largest rooms, and a serene landscape (with wooded views, Canal Views, or Golf Course Views). It's nice an quite and completely relaxing.
So depending on what you are looking for......I would recommend both.

Tuff Choice.

I own OKW and love to stay there to relax, but if you are looking to be near EPCOT (walking distance) BW is a great choice as well.

There are no "clubs" in DTD anymore since they closed PI, just a couple themed restaurants with music.
