Even though we have been DVC members for years, and have made countless trips to WDW, I feel like such a newbie for this trip  . This will be the first trip we take with DH having his own scooter, and it is thowing me for a few loops.

We have a split stay AKV for 3 nights and then OKW for 8 nights. I am not worried about AKV, because all of the rooms are scooter accesible. But OKW does have me worried. We will need to have a ground floor or elevator room. But I am afraid that if I request this need now then I will get a Handicap room. The only thing I have against the Handicap room, is that I have a 2 yo and 4 yo who are terrified of showers. THey have to have a bath, and not bathing for 9 days is not an option.

So do I do a medical request now for a ground/elevator room, and the hope we don't get a handicap room, do I request both - and feel like I am coming across unreasonably picky, or do I wait until we check in first thing in the morning, and hope something works out - which I don't like the thought of either.

WWYD?

THanks

My DS and I took her four children to MNSSHP when my sister was 8 months pregnant! I booked us in OKW and made sure I told them when I made the reservation that we needed a ground floor unit, because I didn't want DS to have to do the stairs all the time. When we checked in they had that note and assigned us appropriately. I would make the request when you reserve and then call to check on it shortly before you go. Good luck.

You can request a ground floor unit.

Then also request a non-HA unit.

What size unit are you looking for? Anything larger than a studio will have a whirlpool tub, whether it is HA or not. Studios, on the other hand, generally have only the roll-in shower in an HA unit.

Are you driving or taking Magical Express? If you are driving, you will probably prefer a ground floor unit and NOT an elevator bldg, as the parking isn't too great at the 3 buildings with elevators at OKW.

That solves all my problems!!! We are so not picky about room requests that I had no idea that the HA 1-bedrooms would still have the tub. I will call tomorrow and request the ground floor.

Thanks for all the help!

For a couple of trips we have needed a ground floor room for a scooter guest. I just requested it and reminded them at check-in, and have never had a problem getting a ground floor unit that way.

some scooters are big enough that they need the handicapped rooms for the bigger doors.

what is the size of his?

will it fit in a normal door.

what size unit are you getting - for a studio the non-hc are generally on the ends of the building at an angle. So getting a scotter into it might be problem. the wheelchair had to be folden up.

a 1-bedroom is definitely better - a 2-bedroom is the best!!! some of the dedicated 2-bedroom even with hc - only have the shower in the master as hc.

the toliet is up higher in a HC room.

My DH has rheumatoid arthritis, and he normally does not need a scooter. If he is having a bad day here, he can just take it easy. But with all of the walking at WDW - there is no way he can do it anymore. The room accomodations themselves are not a concern for us. That is to say that we would just park the scooter at the door, and he would walk around the room.

We will stay in a 1 bedroom. Occationally, when it is just the 2 of us we will slum it in a studio ;) , but with the kiddos it is always at least a 1 BR.

DH is actually a pretty small guy, and his scooter is an "economy" model. Think of the 3 wheel rentals that you see in the parks.

As far as the HA room goes - we don't need any of the accessability, but don't mind having them as long as I have a tub to bath the kiddos in.

Aren't all the doors at OKW the same size? I thought they were all 3 foot doors, even the interior doors to the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Even the heavy duty scooters are rarely wider than 26 inches, and most are less.
The door width required by the ADA for handicapped accessibility is 32 inches, but all of the doors at OKW are wider than that, closer to 36. The doors in the handicapped accessible rooms are the same as the non-accessible rooms.
