We had originally planned to end our trip (which started in a 2bd SV at AKV, then OVIR at VB) by returning to AKV and staying in a value studio - but after actually being in a value studio with just the kids in April - this seemed like a very bad idea. I did not want to end the trip in such a teeny tiny room - so I got on a wait-list to try to switch to OKW (which was the same # of points).

Happily, the wait-list came through! This was our second stay at OKW and truthfully, it was not my favorite DVC because last time it seemed like we encountered grumpy CMs, had bad bus service, and I did not like the set-up of no inside or shaded place to eat CS.

This stay was much, much better.

First of all - the CMs were all very friendly and seemed happy to be there. I had asked on the boards which buildings overlooked the lagoon - and I requested one of them and got a lagoon view - which I LOVED. It was a walk to the HH or even the bus stop - but I enjoy walking around resorts so this was actually a "plus" in my book.

Our room was immaculate - and when I say immaculate - I mean magically immaculate. I've stayed in a lot of studios and I have never been in one that was cleaned like this. I actually called and asked to speak to the housekeeping manager to compliment her, and left a tip and note at concierge, and I'm going to write a letter to OKW - in addition to shouting out here that :yay: ALMA DIAZ:yay: is the best mousekeeper at Disney.

In addition to cleaning the room, she had fanned out and arranged and folded every single towel or piece of tissue paper in the room. Both beds had towel animals. DVC coasters were arranged like hidden Mickeys. There were little washcloth penguins peeking out of every folded hand-towel and waving. You could tell that she loved making her rooms special for guests and just had the "disney magic" that some CMs have.

I loved the balcony and view of the lagoon. I grew up on lakes in Florida - and watching boats go by makes me happy. I had my coffee out there in the morning and wine at night. :cloud9:

The only living room I need in a villa:

All in all, the resort was really pretty - very lush and green and was in great condition. I do wish the walking paths were designed like SSR and meandered through the prettiness of the resort landscaping and not along the bust roads - I'd have loved a change to walk through those trees along the water. :thumbsup2

DD9 did not have a broken arm, so we got to try the pool and it's very cute and has a very, very fun slide. The kids liked it because, unlike VB and AKV - it gets deep. It was a great pool for our family but would not have worked for me when the kids were smaller and needed constant watching because it's deep and there are not many pool-facing pool chairs (even the ones that face the pool don't let you see the whole thing because of the bridge that crosses the pool). But it was great for my older kids and they rated it as their favorite. :thumbsup2

However, I have one complaint about OKW.
On our last trip we had bad bus service (and I'm pretty generous with my patience and define bad as waiting over 30 minutes more than once) - even missing park opening when we got to the bus-stop with an hour to spare. This time, bus service was abysmal. We waited between 45 minutes and 1:30 for every single bus. At DHS we actually counted five SSR, four CSR, and 3 POP buses before we saw our first OKW bus.

I think the problem could be design - OKW is the only resort I've been in that does not have multiple bays for busses to use at the resort - so busses have to line up at every single internal bus stop and wait their turn to load and unload. Now, add to this the fact that OKW seems to attract older guests, many of whom are using rented scooters or wheelchairs and there's a situation where busses can back up quickly as drivers load and unload - especially during the busy summer months. It took us 40 minutes just to complete the internal bus loop after we boarded because of backed up busses loading and unloading. At other resorts - wheelchair and ECV loading only impacts the bus loading - but at OKW there is only one loading bay per stop and it seemed like every bus had at least one ECV or wheelchair on it.

After spending (I kid you not) close to three hours of my day riding on OKW busses or waiting for OKW busses the second day of the trip - we started driving (this was the first time we've ever broken down and started driving ever) and were fine - but using the Disney transportation is a part of the trip I really love, so I was very bummed about the bus situation.

On a happy note - we love the cool ferry to DTD and had a great meal at Wolfgang Puck Express.

All in all - it was a great trip and I'm very glad we were not in a tiny value studio at the end!

Glad that your OKW stay was better this time. Sounds like the new dispatching system for buses is not working yet for OKW. It is hard for me to understand why Disney can't get this sorted out.

It seems like the computer dispatch system may have gotten abandoned - we did not hear any of the pre-recorded spiels and actually had bus drivers talk on this last trip - at both AKV and OKW.

Glad you had a good stay at OKW :goodvibes We'll be going there for the first time in Nov/Dec and I'm getting very excited about it ::yes::

We just got back from SSR and had some of the same problems with busses. They actually had Transportation people stationed at some of the stops tracking and timing the busses as they came thru. Leaving Epcot 2 different nights we saw 2-3 busses for WL/Ft Wilderness come before we ever got a bus (they were the stop next to us) and across the way saw multiple busses come for other resorts. We also had a problem at DTD catching a BC bus, so I think the problem is spread throughout the system.

Thanks for the update. Since OKW is where we are staying in August, it sounds like we need to plan now to drive to the parks, especially if we want to make rope drop. Can't wait to see how much that adds to the gas bill for this trip. Do you think it is feasible to walk over to Epcot and catch the monorail to MK? Sounds like it would definitely be quicker than the busses and easier on the gas tank.

BTW, those are some great looking kids you have there! I know you are proud.

Thanks for sharing your report and pics, my DW, DD17 and I will be staying in an OKW Studio from 8/31 to 9/5. Our first time in a studio there.

Thank you for the report. We will be at OKW next week and were deciding whether or not to get a rental car. I think we definitely will now.

You would not be able to walk to Epcot from there at all. but once you dorve to Epcot or MK then you could do the monorail to the other.

Wow! We have been OKW members since 1992 and have had almost 40 trips there--this translates to hundreds of bus rides, and I've never had this poor of service. Yeah--bus roulette almost seems to come into play: you want a MK bus? Then you will see two EPCOT buses, three DTD buses and one of every other park before the MK shows up, but then I always pick the slowest drive-up line at the bank, too. We did wait a looong time for an OKW bus from DTD to OKW our last trip, and a Disney transportation supervisor came over and radioed in to get a bus there, but that's been about the extent of any extreme complaints. I hope this does not become an ongoing problem.

At DHS we were behind some 8 year plus OKW owners and they said they'd already had to complain about the service that week and that they'd never seen it so bad. :confused3 Rental ECV use is so rampant at Disney these days, and I think the design of only being able to load one bus at a time - especially at the HH stop where there are lots of ECVs - may be causing busses to get backlogged. We saw it 4 busses deep at the HH stop waiting to load - and that was not even during a morning or evening rush.
IMHO, the busses would run much more smoothly if they just turned part of the parking next to HH to a multi-bay bus stop so OKW busses were not competing with cars/delivery trucks/MME/DCL busses for very limited space in line.

We were at OKW June 7-13...we encountered issues with the bus system as well:(
We waited over an hour for an Epcot bus, thanks to a bus driver who lied and said one was right behine him (bus was a bit crowded, but we could have easily stood for one ride)

I am glad you had a great studio view! My mom did not, I postd the pics on the OKW Lovers thread.

Thank you for posting such a nice report-we stayed at OKW in June of 2006 and at that time did not have any problems with the buses-we used ME and for the first time did not have a car-could it be more resorts and less buses?

OKW is our favorite resort. Glad to hear about your mousekeeping. It seems they have taken a hit lately. In our stays (members since '93) we have not had a complaint about mousekeeping. We use Disney transportation our entire trip. So, I am a bit worried about the bus service. Last summer we did encounter a delay when catching a bus at DtD. We were at the West Side bus stop at about 9pm and every OKW bus that came by was full to capacity. I'll keep everyone posted on the bus service when we are there in August.

It seems like the computer dispatch system may have gotten abandoned - we did not hear any of the pre-recorded spiels and actually had bus drivers talk on this last trip - at both AKV and OKW.
From what I know, the pre-recorded spiel is not part of the computer dispatch system. It is activated by a GPS that pulls up the correct part of the spiel for where the bus is at that point.
A big part of adding the computerized spiels was to comply with the ADA. Having a prerecorded spiel makes it more accessible to people with visual impairments (so they would hear the right information at the right time). The spiel is also presented on a captioning screen at the front of the bus, right behind the driver. This is so people with hearing impairments can have information about where the bus is.

You would not be able to walk to Epcot from there at all. but once you dorve to Epcot or MK then you could do the monorail to the other.
::yes::
No way to walk there from OKW

This is making me really start to re-think renting a car.
