OKW or SSR?

DH and I feel we know many of the WDW resorts fairly well, but one thing we're not familiar with are the DVC properties. Next February we plan on going to The World with the whole family and staying at a two-bedroom villa either at OKW or SSR. I'm not sure which is a better pick for our family so here are the things I'm wondering about:

1. Transportation time to the parks
2. Internal transportation time, including walking distances
3. Best buildings to stay in to be close to busses, check-in, etc...
4. Overall space in a two-bedroom villa
5. Overall impressions

Thanks!

Hi! I'm a DVC member with my home resort at OKW, so right up front I'll declare my bias. :teeth:

The villas at OKW are the largest of any DVC.

Both resorts are sprawling and have internal buses. I like to walk, so never worry too much about that.

Both resorts allow for parking, if not directly in front of your villa, pretty darn close!

OKW has more pools. The main pool with the slide, the secondary pool that is large, but no slide and then there are the smaller quiet pools.

OKW has Olivia's Restaurant. Not the greatest, but handy. There is a counter service at the main pool too, along with Gurgling Suitcase, the bar. There used to be counter service (limited) at the secondary pool but I've not checked that out in a long time and it may not be open.

SSR has the lovely Turf Room! NICE. I don't much care for their odd little "food court."

Hmmmm...what else to say. Stay where you get the best rate!

Oh! Transport. OKW is buses to all the parks and DTD. Also there is a ferry to DTD, and a lovely walking path.

SSR is buses to all the parks and walking distance to DTD. There is a ferry to DTD too (but it's truly faster to walk)!

I'm another longtime OKW fan! OKW was the first DVC resort to be built and the rooms are much larger than the other DVC resorts. It is a relaxing, laid-back resort, which we love. Bus transportation is pretty good, except for the mid-afternoon hours, when all buses run on a more "relaxed" schedule. We enjoy Olivia's for breakfast. The neighborhood pools are all quite nice and the one at Old Turtle Pond has a snack bar, which was open when we were there last June; it is seasonal in nature. We love the decor of the rooms and basically everything about it! :goodvibes Taking a boat over to DTD is one of our favorite things to do.

SSR is a larger resort. The rooms are furnished nicely, but are smaller and the lay-out is much different. Walking to DTD is very easy. Bus transportation to the parks is about the same as that of OKW, Epcot being the closest resort. SSR does have a food court and the food is pretty good, but it shares a cash register with the store, so the system is a little odd, IMHO. We have never tried the restaurant. There is boat transportation to DTD, which is a nice alternative.

Because SSR is so spread-out, it is important to add a room request to your reservation if proximity to the hospitality buildings is important to you. The Springs is one of the closer buildings. They have constructed several other buildings since our last trip, so I don't know all the details. We have stayed in Congress Park on two occasions and enjoyed that location. I am sure someone will let you know the bus route so you can make an educated choice about buildings. The main pool is very nice and I am told the spa is quite good, too!

the HH request for OKW is no longer a request - if you get it - it is a guaranteed view.

both OKW and SSR are nice.

staying at SSR this Sept - so I do like both.

with the bigger rooms if you are taking anywhere close to the maximum 8 people - then OKW.

that say like SSR better for little ones - that zero entry pool is very inviting to them.

OKW has 2 queens in the second bedroom.

a dedicated 2-bedroom at SSR will have two queen beds - but a lock off will have a queen bed and a double sleeper sofa in the second bedroom.

My uncle is an OKW owner and called last night to see if I wanted to buy part of his points. :) I'm not familiar with OKW (never stayed there), but he said it's a great resort that's more "condo" like with large rooms and parking available just outside your door. I'm interested in hearing more about this DVC - your responses are great and very timely!

if he has only one contract - then it is all or nothing.

only DVC has the right to take apart contracts.

I was on that linked "heated" thread (and have sinced pm'd and gotten on very nicely with the other poster I might add) and just have to say this. If you realize that these resorts are:
Not really hotels in the usual sense of the word, but rather more condo like, with lots of buildings, spread out, and don't offer things like room service, typical deluxe amenities like bathrobes in the room and daily maid service (if you are staying on points) then I think either resort is wonderful.

We just got back from OKW and loved it. SSR is my home resort but I now typically just take turns between it and OKW.

The OKW units are more spacious, you will get a huge balcony/porch type thing in the one and two bedrooms. A full size washer and dryer and just a ton of space.

The SSR units are not quite as spacious, however I have stayed in two, two bedrooms with family members (six total) and they are lovely. Not as spacious but newer, more elegant furnishings, but smaller balconies for sure. And a much smaller kitchen. Stackable washer and dryer in a closet vs. a full size in a small laundry room.

OKW has tropical theming, palm trees, a tropical themed pool and two cs options. When we were there last week, there was Olivia's of course then there was Goods to Go which has limited offerings (burger, hot dog, chicken strips, chicken caesar salad, tuna sandwich, pretzels, onion rings, and I think a turkey wrap or sandwich). there is the Gurgling Suitcase that has a full bar. Then there was the Turtle Shack which had some snacky type things and I believe hot dogs. As well as beer, smoothies and a soda refill station.

SSR has Artist's Palette which I think is great cs. Flatbread pizzas, sandwiches, salads, chicken strips, hot dogs and a bakery.

SSR has Turf Club, OKW has Olivia's for full service. We ate at both of those during this most recent trip and enjoyed our meals at both.

Both resorts have small stores, but SSR's seems bigger.

As far as pools, SSR being newer has a more state of the art pool area with zero entry, spray jets for the kids, a large slide and a small slide (OKW's pool only has the larger slide). At SSR's pool they often play games with the kids I haven't seen that ever at OKW. SSR also has a second themed pool in the Grandstand area with spray cannons and a separate pool bar and drink station (sort of like the Turtle Pond pool with the Turtle Shack at OK).

If you go with OKW, its nice that you can now gurantee being near the main area if its available. If you go with SSR, I prefer the Grandstand over the Springs. The Grandstand is very close to the springs however, its the first to be picked up and dropped off on the bus route. The Springs is last. So if you are planning on bussing, I would try for the Grandstand. The busses can sometimes be crowded by the time they reach the Springs section. We also love the Paddock area, nice and quiet, I believe second or third on the bus route and very peaceful. And an easy, short walk to the main area across a bridge.

I love both resorts equally. SSR being newer needs some time for its landscaping to mature a bit (although I think the grounds are beautiful, just not as lush as OKW's). But to me its being new is also a huge plus, the units are so fresh and clean. The whole resort is immaculate. OKW is also lovely but I have to say, our recent unit was a tiny bit worn in places (not dirty at all, just some frayed carpet, one slat on the blinds was broken, its not brand new so you have to expect that sort of thing, again, it was spotless). And just little things like the light fixture outside our door was dirty and full of dead bugs. For some reason that sort of bothered me. But the unit was still spotlessly clean inside and I love the furnishings. SSR feels more formal. OKW is definitely older, but the plus to that is that the landscaping is mature and the units are more spacious. And at OKW the second bedroom will always have two beds, vs. the possiblity of getting a lockoff at SSR with a room that has a bed and sofa bed. OKW is so laid back, it feels very cozy and friendly. A lot of the cm's seemed to have worked there a long time and know some of the long time guests. It truly feels like a community of friends. SSR cm's have always been great for us too, but it doesn't have quite the same homey feel. Its not as laid back and it doesn't feel as themed. At OKW you'd swear you were in Old Key West, at SSR, the race horse theming is more subtle in a sense and a lot of people find it lacking in overall theming.

Both resorts have great access by boat to DTD. OKW has a walking path somewhere that closes at dark, SSR is an easy walk from the Congress Park area at anytime of day or night. Some of the units at SSR has nice views of DTD and the Cirque tent.

And of course be aware (this may have been mentioned) that on points, you won't get daily maid service. If you want that, you have to pay extra and arrange that ahead of time. You do get trash and towel service on day 4, if you are staying longer than a week, you will get full maid service. For our recent fifteen nights, we got full service twice, and trash and towel once. Each unit (in both resorts) has a vacum cleaner if you need to do a bit of cleaning up yourself!

If you haven't already, go over to www.allearsnet.com and check out the slide shows for both resorts.

I don't think you can make a bad choice!

If your uncle has some points for you to buy (at what I assume might be a nice family discount!) I'd jump on that. Dh and I really want to buy an OKW contract at some point so that we have contracts at both SSR and OKW. OKW is the only resort besides SSR I'd want to buy at, we absolutely love it. If you stay there before you buy, I am betting you'll buy afterwards! If you stay after you buy his points, I promise you won't regret it.

I have a question for those with experience. If you rent points from a DVC member and discover when you arrive that the resort is not a good match for you...are you able to transfer the value of the points what you have paid for towards accommodations at another resort if something is available? I have rented points to stay at SSR and this thread is making me very nervous.:confused3

I am not sure why this thread is making you nervous, did you click on the other link? Because if you did, you might notice one of trhe people that doesn't like SSR on that thread hasn't stayed there and the other two were expecting more of a hotel. And that thread isn't really the norm at all. MOst people find SSR wonderful, albeit spread out. Its new, it has a wonderful feel, its lovely, there's lots of activities to do or you can do nothing but relax and lay back.

I don't believe you can transfer points towards a differen reservation. If they had availabity at another DVC resort, they might be able to do that but I am not sure. You might post this on the DVC Planning board, there are experts over there on renting.

I would not be nervous. SSR is a lovely resort. It has one of the best pools on property, the units are gorgeous and new and its close to DTD and all its dining and shopping options. I also don't think its inconvenient to the parks or anything else in WDW.

If you look on the DVC board or do a search on this board, you will find lots of wonderful reviews of SSR. I wouldn't own there and have spent the money I did if it was a dud. I know that style of resort isn't for everyone, but you in all liklihood are paying to rent in a first rate, lovely resort what you would have paid through CRO for a value or moderate. There is no comparison.

All resorts get good and bad reviews. Just now, there is anti Poly thread, going strong. All resorts get the heat around here. Go in with an open mind, who knows you might end up buying an SSR contract yourself.

Thanks so much much AmyandDan! I have been pretty excited about this trip. I had booked POFQ for a surprise trip next month for my DD and myself, but a co-worker offered to let me rent points through her and the only availability was SSR. Her home resort is the Boardwalk so she had no experience with SSR. After looking at pictures online I thought it looked quite nice. I am used to the flexibility of room only reservations, so when I read this thread I decided to see if I had any options just in case of a problem. I have stayed at Mods and Deluxe, this is going to be a new experience. I thought the pool loioked nice and we are both midday pool people. I will check into the DVC section. Thanks!:)

I hope you and your daughter have a great trip! My daughter is 11 and she loves SSR the best. She certainly never minds when we stay at OKW, but she always has to go over to SSR's pool, she loves the whole area. And the pool games the lifeguards play she really enjoys. They also have lots of classes and activities guests can participate in. SSR is deluxe level in that the room is so nicely furnished, you'll have a balcony, queen sized bed (unless you are in a one bedroom, then you'll have a king bed for you and a sofa bed for your dd), kitchen or kitchenette (again depending on if you are in a one bedroom or studio). But its not the same feel as a deluxe in that the hallways are exterior and you have to pay extra for daily maid service. I actually like not getting daily maid service, its not hassle to make up the beds quickly and empty my own trash when I need to.

I think you are going to be very happy, renting points is in my book the best, smartest and cheapest way to get really nice accomodations for a fraction of the price. If you were paying cash for a studio right now, it'd be over $300 a night with the tax. This way, you have no tax and I am betting your friend gave you a far better rate on renting points than $300 a night!

Have a wonderful trip!

Yes, you are right! I am staying at SSR for slightly less than the rate I had at POFQ. We have stayed there several times, so I thought something different would add to the surprise. I think I may keep our resort a secret until we get to Orlando. I wasn't sure I could keep the secret, but now it has become fun to know something she doesn't know! I made ADRs at all of her favorite spots too. :rotfl:

We have stayed at both and love OKW. When we went to SSR we had the Grand Villa for 9 of us in the Grandstand. I loved it. It was very roomy and worked out well. We ordered our groceries and they came shortly after we got to our home. It was great we had all our breakfasts in the Villa so we were not rushed off to eat. We plan on going back to SSR next April to a 2 bedroom. We are doing the cruise and WDW at that time.

I have rented points to stay at SSR and this thread is making me very nervous.:confused3

Don't be nervous! We rented points at SSR last year and are going back again in three weeks! We loved it... I agree with Amy&Dan; you'll have a great time!

Just three and 1/2 weeks 'til we leave! I can hardly stand the excitement. :rotfl: The anticipation of telling my DD is outrageous too!!:lmao:

No real experience yet to speak of... we are checking in at SSR on Wednesday! YEAH! I am very excited about it, the photos look great. We requested Springs, Grandstand or Congress Park, so hopefully we will get one of them. We stayed at POR and CSR and I didn't find the walking there at all bothersome, so I imagine SSR will be fine. The pools and splash areas look great!

We have stayed at many resorts, and my mindset is always to go to a new one (hopefully a new one each time until we run out!)... and find what there is to love about it, and the things I may not like, just don't focus on them! Each resort has great things to offer and so I would not be second guessing your choice.

If I can find this thread again I'll post when I get back! :)

You really can't go wrong with either. We prefer Old Key West because the rooms are bigger and more finely detailed and the landscaping is much more lush. But we like Typhoon Lagoon better than Blizzard Beach.
