We are taking our kids, DS9 and DS8, next year during Christmas break and I could use some suggestions for selecting a resort. We are regular Disneyland attenders and have never been to WDW as a family. Any tips and advice you can spare on these two resorts would be greatful. We will be renting points so I want to make a selection soon so I can find a renter and get the planning in gear! :goodvibes

We are OKW owners and just returned from a very relaxing stay there. However, it does require some form of transportation (car, bus, boat) to get to any park. BWV has a more "hustle/bustle" feel on the Boardwalk and is within walking distance to two parks. It really depends on what type of vacation experience you want for your trip.

Have a wonderful trip!

What size room are you looking for? For a studio, I think OKW would be more comfortable, you will get 2 queen beds and a larger room. At BWV, you would get 1 queen and 1 double sofabed. Kind of tight for 4. For a 1 bedroom, OKW is larger but the BWV 1 bedroom isn't bad for 4 (when 2 are kids). I love the atmosphere of BWV, OKW is quiet.

Will you be renting a 1BR or Studio? For a 1BR, I would go with OKW because the rooms are so big. For a Studio, I would suggest BWV because the second bed is a fold out couch. I like having the extra room and the extra seating during the day when it's folded up. One thing to consider is the proximity of BWV to Epcot and DHS. You can easily walk to Epcot and it's a do-able walk to DHS from BWV. At OKW you will have to take the bus everywhere.

If you don't mind taking the bus to the parks (I assume you don't since you're considering OKW) I would also suggest a savannah view at AKV. I think your kids would LOVE having animals outside their balcony.

Thanks for the input :) It is looking like I am leaning towards BWV. I like the idea of it being closer to the parks. We are looking at the studios to keep the prices down. I also like the pool area at BWV (from the pictures I have seen.) The savannah view at AKV sounds wonderful, but I am guessing it would be out of our price range, especially at Christmastime.

If you are planning on BWV, I would definitely make arrangements with an owner to book at exactly the 11 month mark. It can be difficult to get if you wait.

Have a wonderful vacation.

If you are looking at studios you should know that BWV has a queen bed and a pullout sofa while OKW has two queen beds.

you really aren't giving us enough info to be of much help... have you been to the parks before, that would be helpful to know . also, you have about a week to decide and then find points to rent as those will go at the year out mark. Considering your kids are so young, could you consider the week before xmas? Much less crowd, like NO wait compared to 20 min wait with fastpass the two weeks of xmas.
also, I don't think there's much diff between AKL and BWV, points wise. Plus if you are only getting a studio, why would you not just get a hotel room at say Coronado, or Port Orleans? They offer very nice package deals on those. There will be comparable deals next year I'm sure as the economy is only getting worse in the short term.
The big reason we stay in villas is we save so much money not eating at the parks ( snacks only). Just came back ( trip 10-16) I fed all 6 of us well for about 30 bucks a day as opposed to 39 bucks per day , each, meal plan.
also, are you going to the park each day? will you have a car, or depend on busses?
How much after park hours things would you like to do? what is bed time? the two resorts you've chosen are pretty different, so I guess I would have to know if you are laid back and quiet, or will there be cocktails involved after hours? LOL> But mostly, it's important to know that whever you stay, if you go xmas week, it's going to be wall to wall people, and you absolutly need to make that reservation next week to be sure you get what you want if you chose a DVC .
If you pick a hotel, you can wit until next fall, or at least end of winter and then keep watch on deals and change if you find a better offer. once you use points, you're sorta locked in so make sure you get trip insurance.

I've stayed at both! (and I'm a regular DLR visitor...well, I was, until the budget went towards WDW and Universal, LOL) I fell madly in love with OKW just from the pictures, and the reality isn't much different for me. Hubby liked the thought of the AKV, but surprised himself with his love for OKW.

It's very calm and relaxing. The "quiet" pool in the turtle pond area is actually quite lovely. We have rented a car for the length of our two WDW vacations (something we've only done once at Disneyland), and sometimes we take the buses, sometimes we don't. I quite recommend a car, because it allows you to do pretty much *whatever* you want, without having to arrange for extra transportation. We like going off-site for dinner, to Sweet Tomatoes, and like the ability to go elsewhere.

During our last visit, we stayed one night in a studio at Boardwalk, because we had a weird points situation and that worked. I didn't think I'd like it much at all. And totally surprised myself by falling madly in love with the place!

The architecture just spoke to me, the lobby was wonderful, and the clown slide wasn't anywhere near as big and scary as the pictures made it seem, and the slide was fabulous. The pool was great too.

We're going out to Universal in February, and the night we get in we don't want to pay Universal hotel prices AND we need to wash some clothes, so we're getting a 1 bedroom at the Boardwalk...we just want to be there even though we're not going to WDW. :goodvibes

OKW studio is going to be bigger than the BWC studio. I can't directly compare what they'll be like, because we've had a 1 bedroom, and a dedicated 2 bedroom at OKW. The dedicated 2 bedroom's second bedroom doesn't have the kitchenette that the stand-alone studio would have, so I don't actually know what it would look like there. But it was adorable and lovely to my eyes at Boardwalk. :)

What's close to one park isn't close to another. I have a hard time choosing based on that.

Honestly, with the ages of the kids, with the fact that they are close in age and both boys and probably won't mind sharing either a bed or the pullout (which my 7 year old LOVED and slept all night in, when even at home he tends to wander and find the "big bed" b/c he considers it more comfy (though we have the same exact sort of bed, just a size bigger)), I think you'll be happy in either place.

Both are light and bright and pretty. I don't think you can really go wrong with either. :)

I love both BWV and OKW, but if I was going at Christmas I would choose BWV. The ability to walk to 2 parks will be even more valuable. Makes it easy to escape if the crowds get to be too much. Plus I would love to pop over to Epcot for a few hours each night to check out the decorations and enjoy the food in the World Showcase. (I love doing that any time of year.)

Considering that your children are ages 8 and 9 have you considered Bay Lake Tower with its proximity to the Magic Kingdom? By the time you arrive for your visit parts of the Fantasyland Expansion should be in operation. OKW & BW are located close to Hollywood Studios and Epcot which has more of an appeal to older children. The walk from BW to Epcot is a piece of cake while the walk to Hollywood Studios may be a bit taxing for some younger legs. OKW, though considered an Epcot resort, is not within walking distance but is a short shuttle ride. Boardwalk is more a hotel while OKW is set up as a resort with the ability to park your vehicle outside your accommodations.

You mentioned above that AKV savanna view, which is close in cost to BWV preferred, would likely cost too much and you are looking at BWV and OKW. That tells me you will be looking for standard view at BWV. BWV can fill entirely during the 11 month reservation window for Christmas week; moreover, standard views, which are less than 20% of all rooms and go quickly because of the lower points, can fill within the first day of reservations exactly 11 months out for Christmas time and studios could even be gone by the morning of that day. In other words, if you want standard view studio at BWV, you will need an owner who can call at 9 a.m. eastern exactly 11 months out from your date of arrival. Thus, if you want Dec 25 to Jan 1, that owner better be calling at 9 a.m. Jan 25 to assure getting a standard studio
