OKW Maid Caught in Sting-Stealing from Guests Rooms

Just some random thoughts as I read that article:

Best way to keep valuables safe is to leave them at home.

The safe isn't 100% safe, either, but that's where I keep my laptop or tablet & spare cash

I'm surprised that people keep cash in drawers. Maybe they should at least put dirty laundry on top of it??

One of the reasons I like DVC is that housekeeping is not in the room everyday. We usually keep the "Do Not Disturb" hanger on the door know when we are not in the room. Probably doesn't help much, but maybe it encourages those with criminal intent to bypass the room for one that is more likely to be empty.

My thoughts here: how many hotels/corporations would go to the trouble? This was a Disney run "covert" operation - not the police.

So to me this reads as Disney actually taking action on something that happens at every hotel chain every day. (A bit cynical, sure, but dishonest people are everywhere.)

Given the charges, this particular person was suspected of additional thefts - $20 alone doesn't get you grand theft charges.

MTE. They had to have more than just a video of her taking $20 and a suspicion of her stealing more in order to charge her with grand theft. They had to have evidence of her having stolen $300 or more under Florida law to make the charges. Sucks for her to risk her job and any chance at future employment over this.

This is the reason that I prefer to use credit cards, kept on my person, when we vacation. I carry only a small amount of cash and my ATM card for emergency cash. I keep an e-file my Disney GCs and leave them at home. When I'm ready to use them, I transfer their balances to a "blank" Disney GC (that I brought with me for the purpose of paying my room charges) using the disneygiftcard.com website. My small electronics get locked in my carry on bag, which gets locked in a larger piece of luggage. I don't use the room safe.

Now that we live in Canada my dollars are all Canadian. She could steal it all and not get grand theft ;)

But same - we use Ccs, and leave electronics in the safe when we are not in the room.

Some rooms in OKW do not have a safe large enough for a laptop. The original key locking safes are small, they will hold an iPhone, wallet, checkbook and car keys, but that is about it. That said, In 25+ years of visits, mostly at OKW, we never lost anything to room theft. And when leaving a tip for the housekeepers, I definitely leave a note indicating it is for the housekeepers.

If you need larger safe storage, the front desk at OKW, you can request a 'safety deposit box' that is then locked in the resort's safe. I would assume all resorts have this also.
