OKW Extension - What if we just ignore it?

We declined the extension offer, and today DVC sent the paperwork that will make it official. It requires us to sign a form in front of two disinterested witnesses and a Notary Public.

Getting this thing notarized is a hassle that, frankly, I'd rather not deal with. What happens if we just do nothing?

I believe if you do nothing, one of two things will happen. Either you will be assessed the full price of the additional 15 years, or your account will be considered in arrears, and you will be unable to use it unless and until you either pay the extension or decline it. You have already gotten a rebate on part of your dues to cover the cost of getting the paperwork notarized. We found it was easiest to do it while we were at Disney, since the quality assurance folks all have notary capabilities. It was super easy. I do think you will have at least a year to finish the process before anything negative happens.

Your bank, S&L or Credit Union usually provides free or low cost notary services.

BTW, we haven't received our paperwork yet, are they just now starting to send it out? Is it mailed or Fed-Exed?

It's regular mail. I know I can get it done for free at our bank, it's more of a question of taking the time to do it. I'd just rather not.

For the time being, nothing will happen to your account, but if you do not return the signed and notarized documents a lien will eventually be placed on your account. This was voted on last September by the DVC Board at the same time the extension was approved by the same body.

I asked this very question at the annual meeting last December and that was the response I received.

Every OKW owner received a credit of $30 - per contract owned - on their dues for 2008 to help defray expense associated with this.

By my calculations, this is putting me through $14.68 worth of aggravation. So I'm coming out ahead!

my daughter is not going to Disney until Dec so she might ignore it until then what do you think ?

I see that there's no stamp on the return envelope. So it's actually costing me $15.09 of aggravation plus postage.

Really? Don't they use notaries for similar purposes in the UK, like in the US? We have to have a lot of things notarized here in the US, I can't imagine paying $300 to $400 for those service. As long as everyone that needs to sign the contract will be at WDW together in December, I would contact Member Administration/Accounting to see if it would be OK to sign the paperwork while you're at WDW.

Yes ! An expensive Job here in the UK. We were able to do the lot while at Saratoga last week. Took us about an hour. Not only saved about $200 but I've yet to find a Notary within an hour of where we live !

We signed our documents at the SSR sales center on our last visit. I'd call your guide and let them know you plan to sign while onsite in December and I'll bet you will be fine - but call ahead an let them know your intent.

I just find this whole thing beyond irritating - who has this kind of time to get paperwork signed on something we didn't want in the first place.....I really don't get it.

We're going in June and we can take it with us. DH left a strongly worded voicemail to DVC today about this....I'm sure they won't really care....

While I realize it's a hassle, I fail to understand "leaving a strongly worded message" What do you say "Please quit abiding by Florida law because I don't like it"? That's why they have to do this, the way the law is written you have to legally opt out.

I doubt this would have been Disney's first choice either. I mean it costs them a lot of money to do this too!

While Florida law did not force them to extend the contract, it certainly made it possible for them to do so. But only by giving existing members the chance to decline and Fl law is requiring the notarized document to decline.

I received my paperwork yesterday. Each contract came in a separate envelope. I usually get excited when I see mail from DVC...but this was disappointing once I figured out what it.

No, the reason OKW owners have to do this is that the condo associated - i.e. Disney, voting in the guise of representing OKW owners - voted to impose this burden on themselves.

The way the extension was structured sets a horrible precedent - it stinks top to bottom.

There are a lot of folks on here who DID extend and wanted it. So... since you don't like it's bad? For those folks it was good.

I have no problem with Disney offering the extension.

I really don't understand this. So it was greed. You didn't have to extend......But for those who wanted it, it was a great deal. I guess you think they should not have had that oppotunity since "you" didn't want it?

Someone did research on this during the initial "hysteria" on the board. And I am pretty sure the end result was that IF they changed the terms then they have to do it this way, i.e., LEGAL notification that you did not opt in.

I didn't opt in. I am not furioust that my decision will be properly recorded in a legal manner. Personally that's protection for ME later if something ever comes up.

However, on the DIS it's "If I like it then it's WONDERFUL" and if not then "They are HORRID"

Did you read the letter that accompanied the documents? If you decided to not accept the offer and have since changed your mind, you can purchase the extension for the mere price of $20 a point (up $5 from the original). That is only good for a few months and then it goes up again to $25 a point.

Anyone know what percentage of owners opted for the extension verse didn't? I am not sure what we will do when and if they offer this at our home resort. I think they eventually will.
