I am not sure how far we can look for dates. I haven't rented points in 6 years but was very convenient last time. My husband and I stayed at the Animal Kingdom and loved it so we are looking to go to Disney for our 20 year Anniversary. Our actual Anniversary is August 29, 2017 but we are flexible on the dates as long as we can take advantage of the DVC points, meal plans and Magical Express.
