so could I potentially sew a Cinderella dress for DD? I saw a very basic Cinderella costume at Walmart and realized that it didn't look that challenging. Last year I got from the Disney store a Cinderella dress that was very lightweight (I think it was a nightgown) and DD had no issues with wearing it all day. It was cheap enough that it didn't matter if she destroyed it in one day. I want a dress for her for next year (we are doing CRT) but want it to be comfortable, relatively cheap but still cute. I'm debating whether to just grab the costume from Walmart or try to make my own. Anyone have any experience with this?

I'm kinda confused. Do you sew already? Do you own a sewing machine? How much material and sewing accesories do you have on hand? If you need to go out and buy everything, then it would probably be cheaper/quicker/easier to just buy the costume from Walmart. If you have all that stuff already, have you sewn with silky material before? It's not that easy because the slippery material slides around. It's not THAT difficult, but it does take a bit of practice to get the hang of working with the slippery materials.

You will be surprised how those Home Ec sewing skills come back to you. I have made several Halloween costumes with only my Home Ec training.

You might want to price the cost of the materials before starting, then decide if the cost is worth the time. You might be surprised how expensive that shiny blue material will be.

Will the dress have a zipper or Velcro closure?

You might want to practice these techniques on cheap material. Once you assess the cost and your skills, then you can make a good decison. Good luck.

I second checking the prices of supplies before you decide. I make Dd4's halloween costumes every year, and it always costs more to make them than it would to buy a costume. On the other hand, they look nicer, so it is a trade-off. Last year she was a princess, and after all the material and trimmings were figured in, it came to almost $100. (velvet and tulle material, braided trim, zipper, threads, lining- it really adds up)

Sewing is definitely not cheaper, but I really think the costumes look much better. I made a Cinderella costume for my dd for Halloween last year, and it was my first sewing project. I didn't buy a pattern, I just measured her and made one up, and I think it looked great, but anything will look good if you put enough sparkly organza on it and enough ribbon, lol.

Walmart has cheap patterns, they are the "easy" kind, which is what you should probably get. I don't think that sewing is hard at all, but it won't be cheaper. I think my dd's Snow White costume was close to $75, and I already have all of the thread, velcro, and the machines, etc.

I love sewing my kids costumes. It makes them so special, and you don't see 10 other little girls in the exact same one at Disney.

Before reading this thread, I was a "buy it" vote. But I love the fact that ya'll make your DD costumes even though it costs more and takes so much time! I have bought DD2 a Tinkerbell and a Cinderella costume, but I'm inspired to make her next one! I design/sew costumes for other people, but I've always had some excuse for not sewing one for DD. I know that when I do it will be something we both treasure! Thank you for the inspiration!
