bleeding hearts......when do you plant? Do they climb as a vine would?

Welcome, Kristy! There's a first time for everything!

Bleeding Hearts form a bush in early spring with dainty white/pink/red flowers that look like....you guessed it....a heart. They are quite beautiful.

Bleeding hearts love the shade. They really don't tolerate a hot, sunny situation at all. They bloom early spring and then go dormant with foliage eventually disappearing in late spring/early summer (at least in Jersey). Usually, people plant them with other shade loving plants that will grow and cover the bare spot the bleeding hearts leave. One good companion flower is the hosta plant because the foliage of the plant extends far beyond the root system.

We all need a little sunshine in our lives, where better to get them from then flowers. There is a peace you get nowhere else then from gardening. Strangely when we took down a tree my bleeding heart was in pretty much full sun. It grew and grew. We hacked out half of it time and time again and it grew and grew and grew. Bloomed for a long long time too. I'm not used to success like this.

I have a common white bleeding heart that's done fabulously well. Like Gina mentioned, it does die back about early-mid summer. I often plant impatiens in front of it to cover up the bare area, and because they thrive in shade too.

I have 3 "Luxuriant" bleeding hearts, and they will bloom all season for me, IF I keep them in a shady, somewhat moist area. Right now they're in my very little, woodland spot.

I would hold off until spring to plant.

Marlasmom, sounds like you have a very green thumb with bleeding hearts, that 's wonderful!

Thanks for your responses. I am planning a sitting/garden area for next year. I want to have a small pond and some statues, gazing ball, etc along with a bench or two. I plan on enclosing it with a picket fence, so I am looking for ideas to grow up and along the fence line as well as around the pond, etc. (the bleeding hearts are kind of my idea as a memorial to the baby along with a small cherub statue).There is also a small pine tree in the area I plan to do the garden. There is a big tree about 30 feet from where it will be, so it gets like 1/2 shade.
