Okay, I have to ask... Does EVERYONE like the Monte Cristo?

I had no idea there were so many people that didn't like this sandwich! :scared1:

It's funny, because it seems like the people who would normally shun such a thing are the ones who say they like it while the people who think they might like it find it nauseating :lmao:

I'm still totally shocked at myself for loving it (1/4 of a sandwich, anyway). I'm a raw veggies, few carbs and very little red meat type of eater. *Disclaimer: I love desserts with a passion and have to restrain myself in that area as I am no longer able to eat them like I used to without serious weight repercussions

For us, it completely depends on if it is deep fried properly!!!

We have had some that were crisp and delicious, and others that were heavy and soggy with grease(there's nothing more disgusting, when that happens---YUCK!!!):crazy2:

Our absolute favorite way to eat a Monte Cristo, is when we had the "Monte Cristo Bites", once at the "Round-up", during Holiday Time at Big Thunder Ranch a couple of years ago(didn't see the "Bites" this past Holiday Time), and once at Cafe Orleans, when they served us the Monte Cristo similar to the "Bites"---sandwich cut in four pieces then deep fried. Both times the bites were hot, crisp, light, and soooooo good---we always share, as they are very rich!:thumbsup2

Oh, good point! I've been lucky. I've never gotten the heavy, soggy kind. That would certainly kill the thrill.

Huh. Interesting that you saw that... that really is weird

For DH and me, the Monte Cristo is just too "simple sweet" to be delicious as a sandwich. It's more confection-food. We've had it a few times before and it's fine as a dessert, but not one I choose all the time. DH and I split it and end up leaving some on the plate. :)

I make something **kinda** similar at home to use up a holiday ham, with emmental swiss cheese, fig jam, stone ground mustard, and a hearty Italian or French bread, buttered and pressed as a panini. This version gives us the sweet and salty and the fig and cheese is heavenly when hot and oozing out the sides, but the sandwich brings a spicy and savory edge, too. You don't feel sick eating this one!

I can only eat a few bites of one quarter of the sandwich before I was done. It tastes great but I never will finish one or come close to finishing one. During the holidays, the Monte Cristo bites were just about the perfect portion size.

I really love the monte cristo with meat, I've never tried the just cheese ones. I don't like it with the powdered sugar or the jelly, it is too sweet. I usually dip them in ketchup or in the remoulde sauce from the pomme frittes.

My family loves them! It's the perfect combination of sweet and salty. We've had them twice at CO and they've been properly hot both times. My husband can actually eat the entire sandwich. Our waiter was surprised that he ate it all. He's one of those lucky people who can eat whatever they want and never gain weight. I eat part of it and then save the rest for breakfast the next day. It is a great breakfast!
