Okay, I have to ask... Does EVERYONE like the Monte Cristo?

Honestly, the sight and description of the Monte Cristo sandwich that everyone loves so much makes me a little queezy. A deep fried white bread sandwich stuffed with various cheeses...? My tummy hurts just thinking about it and I can't imagine that sitting in my tummy whilst Soaring over California. :scared:

Maybe it's a southern thing...? We don't deep fry a whole lot up here in Canada-land so maybe that's it?

For some reason, I do want to try it this time just to taste for myself but there is just nothing about it that sounds appetizing. It's going to take a lot to look over all the other nummy options available. I'm so not a picky or overly healthy eater either.

I'm curious, anyone think they would hate it but loved it after trying it?

Nope. Not everyone likes them.

I do. My wife hares them to the point I do not order one when we eat together. sometimes I go to the BB alone just to get one.

It is a very Southern US thing.

I have not yet tried the DL "all-cheese" version of the Monte Cristo...but a traditional Monte Cristo has been one of my favorite treats since I was a kid.

Having read all the raving reviews about the cheese one, I might try it on my next trip....seems like it would be like eating an ultimate grilled cheese sandwich! ::yes::

I think it's like any dish, some people will love it, some will hate it, and some will ambivalent about it. I like it, but I don't order it very often.

I am a massively picky eater and thought the monte cristo sounded pretty disgusting, especially slathered in the jelly. Turns out it is amazingly good. I prefer the one with meat in it over the one that is the 3 cheese. The cheese version is delicious but after about 3 bites it is just too rich for me.

My son, who is even more picky than I am, loves them too.

6 billion(ish) people in the world - I'm sure there must be a couple who don't like the sandwich. I have yet to meet them, but I'm sure they must exist. :flower3:

My girls and I are picky eaters in varying degrees and RARELY eat fried foods. However, we all love the Monte Cristo. It is very rich and we can only eat one triangle each, but that is an economical way to have it since we split one MC 4 ways :) Oh, and we like the one with ham.

Nope DH and I decided to split one to see what all the fuss was about.... We both thought it was too greasy... we both love love love cheese and fried food, but this sandwich was not for us

I was so excited to try it after also hearing rave reviews. Unfortunately I thought it wasn't that great, and probably won't ever order it again.

I love it, but none else in my family really does--which is problematic considering its big/dense enough to feed 2-3 adults.

I heard so many good things about it that I had to have one! I love Monte Cristo's normally, one of my favorites. But this one I could not eat at all. I tried peeling all the batter off but I still could not stomach it. It was disappointing after hearing so many good things about it, but all the deep fried goodness is too much for my Canadian tummy.

:goodvibes

I love cheese. I love deep fried foods. I love powdered sugar. But the Monte Cristo? I'm just OK with it. People rave about it not stop here and on other boards and I always wonder why. I've had it at different places as well, and it's always "just ok". With all the good food at BB and CO, I won't even consider it.

Monte Cristo's can be touchy with regard to grease. Like anything fried, if the grease is not hot enough to begin with, whatever you're frying will simply soak up the grease, rather than getting crispy. Some chefs/restaurants just don't get that....or they don't drain it off properly after frying.

I've had a few oil-soaked Monte Cristo's in my lifetime (at various restaurants) and they are gross. Now, when that happens, I send it back. I want a fried sandwich, not bread soaked in oil. :(

I think it is worth trying, but it is not my thing.

I love it, it's definitely a heavy meal, but it's a once in a trip thing (sometimes twice  ). If I'm being honest though, I actually much prefer the Pomme Frites (the remoulade sauce is AMAZING), but the combination of the two is the best - I wouldn't eat the Monte Cristo without the Pomme Frites, but I would eat the Pomme Frites without the Monte Cristo.

We love the three cheese Monte Cristo at CO! I have it at least once a year (share it with my niece) and have never felt it was too greasy! Now the one with ham is another story! The last time I had it at BB it was horrible, sent it back and the next one was just as greasy! ended up getting something different all together!

I am sure you will get a lot of different opinions :)

My husband and I tried the ham version at BB after reading reviews and neither of us enjoyed it - it was just not our thing. (DH described it as a jelly donut with ham and cheese, which was not too far off - and I LOVE jelly donuts:p). I was only able to have 1/4 of the sandwich and it sat very heavily in my stomach for a couple hours afterwards.

However, I am really glad we tried it, as I enjoy trying new things. It was also our first time dining at BB and we were seated canal-side, which was fantastic.

Maybe get it at CO with one or two others to try - you might find it to be your new favorite!

I so want to try one.. because of the hype, but like you the sound if it just doesnt float my goat..
On our next trip. I will try one, but will ask for the powdered sugar and jelly to be on the side.. that way I can have it more as a savoury sandwhich than a meat with sugar one.. ugh
