OK - what's this movie called?????

Hi folks. Here's yet another obscure question from me. We were having a discussion last night about an old children's fantasy movie that we think is from the early 80's. Most (if not all) characters in this movie were puppets (like Yoda in Star Wars). There were good guys and bad guys. The "bad guys" had what looked like a diamond which was used to "suck" the life out of the good guys. They lived in a very ugly, run down mountain (maybe a castle?). The heroes of the movie looked to be like very large snails (they moved at that speed) and took forever to reach the mountain to save their friends who were being drained of their "life force" from these diamond like things. I think the movie came out around the same time as Labrynth with David Bowie.

If anyone can figure this out from my foggy memory, you're AMAZING!!! Thanks to anyone who can hazard a guess!

Oh, oh, oh - I remember this vividly!!! Almost positive it was a production by Jim Henson. The princess was named Kira, I think.

The movie is called "The Dark Crystal". One of my favorites. The characters are Jen and Kira with her "dog" fizzgig.
The slow movers are called the "Mystics" and the bad ones are called the "Skeksis"

The creator was indeed Frank Oz or Jim Henson who did Yoda as well. I think they may have worked on it together.

Yep, Dark Crystal. And it's not only out on video (though I don't know if you can still get it or not), but also on DVD. I've got the DVD.
