...but I catch on fairly quickly. :goodvibes

For my 2008 use year (February), I have 515 points left.

I do not plan on using DVC points between now and the end of 2009.

I realize that I can bank 2009 points for 2010, so that's not an issue.

But I will not be able to use 2008 points in 2010, so I need to do something with those points now.

I think the best way for me to handle this would be to transfer the 515 points for the 2008 use year to a buyer who can then bank them and use them next year.

I have no idea how to do this, or where to begin. I do not want to rip anyone off, nor do I want to get taken advantage of.

Can someone help me out with the process? Thanks!

Renting/Tranfer is a great option to use point. But you can not trnafer banked points only current ones. The only option to use the banked points would be vacation yourself or rent a reservation. Read the stickeys on the rent/trade forum to learn the procedure. Good Luck

Another option is to deposit the points for an II trade. Not necessarly the best use of the points, but at least you will be able to use them.

Depending on your UY, banking 2008 points to 2009, they will be available for 12 months. So, if you have a August UY, they would be good until July 31, 2010.

The OP is not trying to transfer banked points - he wants to transfer current year 2008 points.

OP: Read all of the "Sticky" threads at the top of the Rent/Trade Forum.

Post your offer according to the rules in the sticky threads.

Negotiate a price (have one in mind if you don't post it) & terms with someone who responds. You can read some of the threads to get an idea of how much your points are worth. (Many will accept 1/2 the agreed upon price as a "deposit", then transfer the points and then accept the remaining 1/2).

Another alternative is to respond to a poster who wants a point transfer.

To make the actual transfer happen, you call MS and make the request. You'll need the name and address of the person accepting the points - some will also give you their member number.

Do keep in mind that you may only transfer out once per use year, so you'll be looking for someone who wants a lot of points.

If you can't transfer them all to one person, you'll have to make reservations with the remaining points you can't use and rent those. My advice is to bank the 2008 points if you don't have them all transferred or rented by your banking deadline (September 30 with a February use year). You can make reservations with banked points and rent those. So by banking you'll give yourself more time if you need it.

Renting a reservation is more work than transferring, so good luck - hope you find someone who wants 515 points.

Thank you so much Carol. I really appreciate it. I will get started promptly!

PS One quick question...someone else said I could not transfer banked points. But can someone bank TRANSFERRED points?

In other words, if I transfer Feb 2008 use year points to someone, how long do they have to use it?

Yes, transferred points may be banked by the recipient.

Banked points may not be transferred.

I'm a new DVC member, so this might be a stupid question.

Can I get transferred points from someone that have to get rid of them by, say the end of September 2008, and then bank them, or is is too late?

No compensation may be received for the transfer of points. It is prohibited in the declarations/regulations. Keep that in mind as you proceed.

You mean I can't sell a year's worth of points to someone and deliver them via a transfer? Am I missing something?

That is correct. You, technically, cannot do that. If MS gets wind of it, they will often not agree to process the transfer. It is prohibited under the documents we all sign to become members or that are incorporated by our signature on any closing documents.

The POS (Position Offering Statement) does say that members should not receive compensation for transferring points. Points are only a representation of a member's real estate interest and thus have no value. If there is a dispute between members over a transfer, the members are on their own to resolve it - Disney will not get involved. (Points have no value, so their is no reason for a dispute, LOL).

AFAIK, Disney has not ever enforced the "no compensation fior a transfer" rule or mentioned it in any of its communications to members (outside of the POS). MS doesn't ask if money is involved before doing a transfer. IMHO, it is beyond belief that Disney doesn't know it's being done (money for a point transfer).

I haven't transferred any of our points, but I would have no hesitation in accepting compensation should I ever choose to do so. Again, there is some risk to transferring points, since a transfer is not reversable and DVC/MS/DIsney will not get involved should there ever be a dispute (Remember, points have no value).

The above is my opinion. I am not a lawyer. Others may have a different opinion. OK by me if they do.

Carol,

With due respect, if you have never transferred points it is very audacious to make statements about how MS handles the phone calls on transfers. Sometimes they DO ask about whether money is transferring hands. Furthermore, if there is a slip and someone mentions that money has or will change hands, MS HAS been know to terminate the call without making the transfer.

I don't disagree with your statements about enforcement and I also would probably do the compensation thing if I were to ever transfer points again and transferring offered the best option.
