Ok. Kids Birthdays. What do you think?

I'm toying with the idea of going again next year (shhhh, don't tell dh.. ). Anyway, next year, I will be 50, ds will be 13 and we'll be married 25 yrs. I was thinking, to pick 3 different nights and have my ds pick a restaurant, I'd pick a restaurant and dh & I would choose one. We'd celebrate each special day separately. Not making a big fuss, but we'd know amongst ourselves. I may or may not tell the CM at the restaurant....

I agonized about this, too, before our trip this past January. We went to WDW one week after my dd's 8th b-day, and we decided to choose a day while we were there to celebrate. She got but did not wear the "Today is My Birthday" pin ('cause frankly, it wasn't), but before we left for our trip we got her a "Birthday Girl" pin to wear instead. It all worked out great, and she got lots of attention. This year, we'll be there for her b-day! :)

You have to do what's best for your family in your situation. I don't think anyone would question your intentions or anything! Have a great trip, and happy birthday to the kids!

We have never been able to plan our trips ON my kids actual bdays, sometimes they fall during the week and we take long weekends and my daughter's is in August and sometimes falls in our season pass blackouts and around the 1st day of school.

This year we were actually able to go ON my younger daughters birthday April 16th, my older daughter wanted nothing else but to be able to go to disney on HER birthday too. Unfortunately, her bday fell on the the 1st day of school and following that her sister had eye surgery. We just came home on Sunday from our disney vacation where we finally celebrated her birthday.... she patiently waited until 6 weeks after her bday to have her celebration and I saw nothing wrong with rewarding that. We took one day as her day, she was the birthday girl, wore a pin and chose where we ate and where we went (she chose MGM). Funny enough she managed to stop and tell everyone she was celebrating her bday late because her sister had surgery and one CM actually gave my younger dd a Congradulations pin for her surgery... lol.

Disney celebrates things for 15 months including Walt's Birthday!!! No one told them they were "lying" for celebrating on days that weren't actually his birthday!

There was a huge discussion that eventually got locked about celebrating bdays on the restuarant (I think) board...

this was one of my arguements! :)

we all need to not worry about what others are doing - unless of course that involves bodily harm...but if people are celebrating why not smile or give good wishes?

I have no problem with getting the button even if it's not your "real" birthday. Not everyone can arrange to be there on that particular day. Heck! Disney celebrates things for 15 months including Walt's Birthday!!! No one told them they were "lying" for celebrating on days that weren't actually his birthday! My daughter just turned 9 on October 3rd. We are leaving tomorrow for WDW and will celebrate her birthday one day while we are there. They do not ask for "proof" at Guest Services. I don't think it's a lie to have your kids celebrate on a different day. You can always have a "Very Merry Unbirthday" like in Alice in Wonderland! Go for it! Don't let the "Polly Perfects" of the world tell you can't or shouldn't do it! Life has way too many rules! Go and celebrate at the Happiest Place in the World! Enjoy and have fun! :cake:

You do realize don't you that the OP asked for people's opinions. And that's what we have been doing. Just because you don't happen to agree with the minority here is no reason to be this way. We are not 'Polly Perfects', we are not telling someone how to live their life. I was asked for an opinion and I gave it and quite good naturedly I thought. Everyone was being pretty nice and upbeat in their responses. I'm sorry you feel that others can not have a different opinion....neither opinion is right or wrong....just an opinion. I am so NOT a Polly Perfect!!! :earseek:

Please let us all be nice.. I appreciate everyone's opinion. I will celebrate my girls birthdays at the restaurants... I will not have them wear a "today is my birthday" button.

They would feel the need to tell everyone that it really isnt their birthday that day.. so, I will just avoid that issue all together..

Thank you all for your opinions you all gave me what I was looking for and nobody flamed me.. whoo hoo!! :cool1:

16 days till my big vacation with the Head Cheese! ::MickeyMo

I guess some of you never sing Happy Birthday to your kids except on their exact days.

We celebrate our children's birthdays on the closest weekend. Please don't tell the Birthday Police!!! :rotfl: I don't consider it a lie. We do it so that family and friends can share the time.

Do you never give a Chirstmas gift on a day that is not exactly December 25th? Do you never wish someone a happy new year on a day that is not exactly January 1st? How depressing.

Just my 2 cents.

Yep, I do all of those things!!! So obviously I have no issues with those things. It's just those darn birthday buttons I have an issue with. I guess, for me, it's kind of like truth in advertising. I mean, everybody has a birthday...so, with my birthday in July, should I get and wear a birthday button in Dec? I just think that it takes away from the 'specialness' of being able to wear one. That's all...no 'policing' here. As someone has already said...when everyone is special, then no one is special. (or something like that anyway). If you choose to wear a birthday button, terrific! That's your choice. But I don't. I also don't put up only white lights at Christmas...does that mean everyone has to follow suit? Of course not. Just stating my own personnal opinion. A 'Very Merry Un-Birthday' to you all!!!! :cake:

It is your choice and you must do what you need to do. I personally think it waters down the whole idea if so many get pins and it's not their birthday or at least close by a day or two.

See...told you I would be in the minority :rotfl: :bday:
I agree with you, goofy4tink. I know many people do it, whether is a week away, or months away. In reality, every person could be "celebrating" a birthday there every day...we all have them. I think it sort of takes away from those who really are having a special day.

I guess what it comes down to is if you feel comfortable doing it.

One year we arrived in WDW on 12/20 and my DS had turned 7 on 12/18. Since my birthday was during the trip, I thought we would celebrate DS's too, on our first day. When it came down to it, putting the button on him and getting a cake at dinner just seemed silly since his birthday was already over with, so we didnt.

But no one is going to check the dates, and if you feel you want to celebrate you can. ;)

shouldn't we all be special regardless of birthdays? What about the people that don't celebrate those?

Well of course we're all special!!! That wasn't what I meant. It's just that on 'birthdays' the birthday person should be 'special' for that day. I'm so done with celebrating birthdays....at my ripe ole age, I'm just glad another one rolls around each year. That's what I celebrate. So, of course everyone is special, each in their own way. It's just that some 'days' are more special than others. No offense intended.
