Ok...I have to vent.

Awww, that really sucks. I'm so sorry that some people behave that way.

It gets to me too. Some people really don't like gay/lesians/ etc. and i don't understand why. It doesn't make any sense. And all this about it being an unnacceptable lifestyle? How on earth is it unacceptable? Some peopple really annoy me with their views on this. I just struggle to see how and why it affects them in that way. That way of living is not hurting them, or anyone else.

Sorry i went off on a tangent then. :rotfl: vent over :)

There are 3 different types of complainers in this world.

1. Some feel a bit too stongly about the subject.
2. Some people are just waiting for something to complain about.
3. Others who just jump on the band wagon...

OK...a verdict has been reached.

They called everyone into the office today and the play has officially been canceled. :guilty:

The theater teacher said it was because he thought everyone was too young to deal with all the issues that comes with doing something so controversial, but my mom thinks that the real reason may lay behind 'heated' e-mails he may have gotten by people.

He's also gay himself...and she said that maybe someone had threatened to tell people if he went through with this. It's just sad. It reminds me of back when blacks were JUST getting their rights. When there would be rallies and uprisings over something as simple as allowing black children to attend the same schools as the white ones. Really, they're doing the exact same thing now...only it's over marriage rather than education.

I really don't want my generation to be remembered as being like that, though. But...what can I do when things like this continue to happen?! I'm just tired of it. IT WAS A PLAY. And if it was a signal of people finally gaining some sort of acceptance of a 'different' life style....then so what?! Is it really that horrible of a thing to have happen? Isn't it about time we got over this type of mess?!

We finally have our very first African American President....
How long do you think it'll take for people to grow the same acceptance for Gays/Lesbians/Transgenders?

It's just not fair. :guilty:

Thata awful they cancelled it, from the bits I read about the play it does seem with the obvious controversial parts out could give a good understanding to people. Gay/Lesbian/Transgender people are really no different to straight people except that they love people of the same sex...they didn't one day decide this, they were born that way (I know the hardships of transgender issues best as I have a few friends who are transgender, wonderful people).

I'm sure if the play promoted male/female relationships there would have been little if any complaints.

I'm so sorry that it was canceled. It's really terrible when people are like, "Oh no, it's a play about sex, drugs, and AIDS!" But really, like a few others said, if you don't like it, don't see it! If something bothers you about it, that's fine, just don't let your child see the show or perform in the show.
Rent is a beautiful musical. It isn't only about drugs and homosexuality and all, it actually has a really powerful meaning to it. It's tough for a lot of people to get that, because most of them don't like things that make them uncomfortable, and these are different topics than they're used to hearing about. Anyways, I'm sorry. I bet it could have been a great show

Thanks everyone.

Right. Because 14-18 year olds ALWAYS run around acting like "Spider Man" after watching his movies....or start cheering in the halls and doing backflips after seeing "Bring It On".

LOL! That's true.

I have a very interesting story to tell everyone that goes along with all of this...
I found out at the end of my junior year (a few months ago) that Musical Theatre International (MTI) was releasing the rights to Rent: School Edition. All of the kids in the class, including our sponsor, made plans to go and see the show being performed at a high school about an hour away (although it was a long drive, we as students knew that it was going to be totally worth it.)
So we went, our sponsor did not. Part of it was his dad died a few weeks prior to the show. However, we were all very pissed that he did not come and see the show because we knew now that he did not see it our chance of doing it completely slipped out of our hands. And it did.
When we saw him in school the next school year, it was completely out of the question. It was too hard, we don't have that kind of money, we dont have that kind of talent, the principal wont go for it, bla bla bla bla bla... The excuses were endless.
The students and I started acting outside of school because we all felt we had major potential that was not being reached. We did "Dorothy Meets Alice" over the summer (it's when Alice in Wonderland meets the Wizard of Oz. Again, our teacher was skeptical about this one for practically the same reasons). AND we did the play AT THE LIBRARY!! (I volunteer there, so I sort of had connections)...
anyways, to condense the ending (to "cambells" it, if I may), we did a fairy tale night which I practically set up, and this spring we have no idea what we are doing. HOWEVER!!! We are doing one of our plays that we did at our fairy tale night at the library in the spring :thumbsup2 AND over the summer, we are planning on doing Into the Woods :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
AND AND AND!!! If we have the funds, we are planning on doing rent in the fall, but moving down the road to our performing arts center.
Therefore, in my book, we are doing better without our sponsor!

Not good at all. It is a shame that is the adults that are teaching there children these ways. Censorship, hate and discrimination is what is bringing down this world. I hope something can be done to save the play as it would be a shame of all the work put into it up to this point. I hope the voice of reason can be heard and it will have to unfortunately come from the kids.

Some people (like the other students) think that I am in way over my head with the idea of doing a show that has such "big numbers" and "cooperation of characters," and to a point I agree. On the other hand, I am a Disney Boy (hence why I joined this forum). Disney people are dreamers. Yes, sometimes people dream really really REALLY big, but isn't that where good ideas come from? (*cough* Walt) If we don't at least try and reach for the stars, then all that is going to happen is people are going to "settle" and I am not to settle doing some hillbilly play which nobody is going to see anyways!:furious:
