DH is convinced that Shadow is sort of like Santa Claus, very busy, but never seen. He's even got me wondering! So please, tell me the truth, does "Shadow" really exist? Or is he just that-a "Shadow"?

I saw Shadow last year. I even took his picture, though what I actually got is a cluster of kids around him. I'd have to see if any part of the dog is actually showing. Shadow is a mild-mannered golden retriever.

I'm leaving for HH tomorrow morning. I'll let you know when I get back if I see him again.

We saw Shadow our first trip to HH. She came out to visit with the kids during the campfire. B'Lou as her guide.:D

We were at HH a few weeks ago and I like your DH didn't believe Shadow was real. But he did show up with B'Lou on Thursday morning by the campfire.

We've seen Shadow each of our last two trips. Last time, B'Lou said that Shadow runs on her own, and that it is his job to track her down once a week, take her to be groomed, and then present her to the children at the resort. He said that Shadow leads a pretty spoiled life. Then again, I think that I'd be spoiled too if I got to live at HHI.

We saw her with B'Lou at the campfire and we had B'Lou and Shadow to ourselves for a magic show (noone else showed up). My DS loved Shadow.

Shadow can often be found sleeping just behind the recreation dept. counter. We've been lucky enough to visit with her on each of our trips to HH.

We have an autograph from Shadow, and a bunch of picture.....and Mr. B'Lou is our hero......long story, but about 2 years ago we lost our beloved Butchie, a golden retriever, to cancer. My now 7 year old son was absolutely devastated- he'd lost his best friend. We have two other dogs, but they are just not the same, and my son continued to greatly miss his silly old dog. We arrived at HH last year, a year after losing Butchie. We see B'Lou and Shadow. Mac runs away in tears- the memory is just TOO much. My DH ran after my DS, and I stayed with my DD's. B'Lou asked why Mac was so upset- when he found out he took Shadow up to our room to meet Mac and let him bury his head in her fur and sob....it was heartbreaking but VERY healing. After that, Mac would run up to Shadow every time he saw her for the rest of the week. When we left, we received an "autographed" picture of Shadow to keep- and make keeps it in a frame on his bedside table.

I don't know how or why, but Shadow and the sensitivity of Mr. B'Lou Crab was a real turning point for my son. We wrote Disney and Mr. B'Lou letters telling them our appreciation, but I am not sure they will EVER understand how much that silly old dog meant to my son. Shadow is not just a myth- she is a miracle worker!

that was an awesome story Val, thank you so much for sharing.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but I seem to remember that for the first few years that the Hilton Head Island resort was open, Shadow WAS only a myth.

It's only been in the past 4 years or so that Shadow has been making scheduled appearances with B'Lou Crabbe, and that the dog house, and separate entrance by the recreation window have been added.

;)

And, Val -- what a great story about Shadow and B'Lou. Those HH CMs are the absolute best, Shadow included!

The CMs have told us the last 2 times we were there that when the resort was being built, Shadow was a stray dog who was hanging around, that everyone got attached to her and she was allowed to stay. We were also told that the tiles in the entry way of the villas that have a dog print in them from Shadow walking across the tiles. Don't know how much of all of this is true, but that is what we were told anyway.

That's kind of what got me wondering. They had a "Meet Shadow" activity at the campfire pit on the day we left. It was supposed to be at 11:30, but as we left at 11:45, everyone was still sitting waiting, and yet all the other activities had gone on so promptly. Then we thought we heard some thunder overhead, and someone commented about perhaps Shadow was afraid of the thunder. DH thought it was all part of the "act", although we heard it really rained for days after we left!

We saw Shadow on April 17th when we were walking through the lobby. A CM had him behind the counter and brought him out to see our daughter. We took several pictures.

We met Shadow in September, escorted by B'Lou to a then flooded campfire pit. B'Lou estimated Shadow's age as about 10 years old and told us the same story TIdoublegaER reported- that Shadow basically came with the island.

We saw Shadow and DS had lots of petting time with Shadow New Year's 2001. They advertized the meet in the activites calendar and even though it was pouring rain, 11 kids(and their parents) showed up. Very nice dog.

We just returned from HHI yesterday and did not see Shadow. I really thought Shadow was a myth until reading this thread. The campfire was canceled on Friday night so that may have killed our only chance to see Shadow for this trip.
