I'm sure we all end up with stale crackers, tortilla chips, bread, etc., in our cupboards. Does anyone have any recipes using stale grains that they care to share? I hate to see all that stuff go to waste...

Actually any recipe that calls for "crumbs".. Once you add all of the other ingredients and spices, the stale taste disappears..

I make my own breadcrumbs with stale bread. When we get to the end of a loaf, I put the heels in a paper bag and put it in the cupboard for several days until it dries out and is hard. Then I break it up into the blender and blend until it is reduced to crumbs. Allows for no waste on bread and then I can have 100% whole wheat or flax bread crumbs instead of the white crumbs I see in the grocery stores.

I use stale crackers, cheezits, goldfish, etc as topping for cheesy potatoes, hot chicken salad, or any other dish that has a crust topping. Cheezits are awesome on potatoes!!!

I will have to turn our heels into crumbs, not sure why I never thought to do that. We do use stale bread for breakfast casserole or french toast casserole sometimes.

Bread Pudding! - just made this recipe today for the first time (I used some old apple cinnamon bread and used craisins instead of raisins & light brown sugar - got 2 thumbs up by dh who's a bread pudding fan) and it was very quick and easy to make. This can also be made with any type of bread product e.g. bagels, muffins, challah, etc... enjoy!

Ingredients
6 slices day-old bread
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
4 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
3/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Break bread into small pieces into an 8 inch square baking pan. Drizzle melted butter or margarine over bread. If desired, sprinkle with raisins.
3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Beat until well mixed. Pour over bread, and lightly push down with a fork until bread is covered and soaking up the egg mixture.
4. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top springs back when lightly tapped.

We do a Mexican skillet meal with old tortillas. A pound of browned hamburger, some salsa and/or Ro-Tel, beans, bit of seasoning, torn tortillas on top. Simmer a bit then throw on some shredded cheese and let melt.

Old tortillas or tortilla chips are also good mixed into scrambled eggs. If you're using tortillas, cut or rip them into smaller pieces. If you're using chips, break them up a little with your hands. Stir into beaten eggs and let sit a while until they get soft, then fry them up and serve with salsa.

Thank you all!! These are great ideas; think I'll try a chicken dish with some stale crackers :)

I must be an odd one because if I find something has gone stale I throw it out or put it in the bird feeder.

Croutons from stale bread, we bake fresh bread and I make croutons and breadcrumbs. Cube the bread, toss with olive oil and italian seasoning and toast on a cookie sheet.

I keep a bag of "crumbs"in my freezer, bottom of the potato chip bag etc., they work great in meatloaf, meatballs, anything that needs a "filler". I will have to keep in mind that ideas about the top of potatoes and macaroni and cheese occurred to me also when I read that.

What about stale Cheerio - I bought a large box and it got stale on me. Any ideas.

I use stale corn flakes to coat chicken and bake it. I also put stale corn flakes in scrammbled eggs. Stale bread is good in breakfast cassarole with eggs and sausage

I feed the ducks with it. If you don't have food they follow you around so I feel like I'm not really tossing it out.
