:confused3 We have been to Disney World 20 + times and never camped. We are DVC owners so we usually stay in Deluxe Villas. Spring Break (April 3-10) will be our first attempt at camping in a pop up camper for more than 1 night and close to home (North GA). We have been thru Fort Wilderness and it seems to be a blast but we are starting to have 2nd thoughts. Our 7 and 5 year are set on the camping though. Any encouragement out there. Can we make it a 7 nights 500 miles from home?

Your main concerns are food and clothing. We usually bring two coolers for food and drinks. Will you be cooking a lot? Freeze your meats in double ziplocs to keep any water out. You will probably have to redo the ice every 3 days. Gas grills are more convenient than the amount of charcoal you will go through as well as time spent lighting and waiting. Bring plenty of extension cords and take advantage of the electric for frying pans, coffee makers, out door lighting etc. I feed a extension straight from the hookup instead of knocking out my circuit breakers in the pup. Bring your own detergent for washing. Tape up the seams on your coolers on your trip down. The wind will seep in at speed and kill your ice.
Bring at least a 50 ft hose in case you need to maneuver your pup away from the hookup somewhat..(the water pressure is very strong at the fort..don't turn it on all the way..like I did.) ..and you know..., everything else popcorn::

Kick those second thoughts to the curb...you'll have a friggen BLAST!!!!! My wife REFUSED to EVER tent camp.....untill we stayed at the cabins at the fort.....after a week there, she loved the fort SO MUCH that she agreed to tent camp there on our next trip. That next trip came and we live a little further than you(about 640 miles) away...and it was GREAT...we DID bring an air conditioner for the tent because it was in late May/early June and hot as pig spit....but we had a wonderful vacation. Go for it and be excited...you wont be disappointed. Theres a Walmart and Target just a few miles away incase you forget that ONE item(or several...as we always do) so dont worry about panicing if you forget something.

We stayed at the Forst for our first time this past Dec. in tents, we do own a popup, but decided to save money and just use some small tents, the weather was ummm not the best and we were soaked most of the time and freezing the rest of the time:rotfl: and how I must have wished for my pup about a million and one times:laughing:but even with all of that weather I wouldn't have traded one minute of our time there!!! W e had so much fun at the Fort met some awesome people including some Disers(hi carol and shanta man):goodvibes and it truly was a blast from beginning to the end. I will admit that we are staying at the POP when we return this Sept. partly because of the weather and the heat but I can promise you that we will be back at the Fort again(with our pup:rotfl2:)because it is the most awesome place in Disney to stay!!!!!!

You won't regret it! You and your children will have a blast at the fort. Don't forget to bring their bikes if you can ~ lots of room to explore :)

ILO. :lmao:

You need to purchase a pressure regulator. They run something like 10 bucks at Walmart

The only problem that I see is that, (apparently), you have never camped for more than a night. If at all possible, I would do a trial run on camping, or pop up camping in your yard for a couple nights before you hit the Fort. Believe me, you'll need the trial run for a better experience at the Fort.

As far as the Fort goes,,Rog is right,,ya'll will hava friggen BLAST !

and praise the good lord for Wally Weird, :thumbsup2
(they are close by)

We did the pop-up thing for 2 weeks at the Fort with a 6 and 2 year old and had a blast! It was nice to come 'home' from the parks to familiar beds and living space. Cooking at the pop-up was great too and we used an outdoor gas grill, crock pot and sandwich fixin's to eat as well as we wanted to.

I didn't catch when you were planning on going, but I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun. Enjoy, and keep us posted with pics of your rig and campsite.

Hey,

North Ga just popped out at me - we live in Gainesville.

Karen

You are gonna have a great time. Make sure you bring your bikes. We ride ours everywhere. Just remember, if you forget anything or run out of stuff, Super Walmart is only a few miles away. Have Fun.:hmghost:

Hey -- we will be there April 1-11, we used to live in Blairsville, GA back in 1999-2000 and we've been to Dahlonega!! I hope you have a great trip. You should check out the golf cart rental thread, we have rented through Kenny with Tee Time and he is fabulous! We did the pop up with our first trip in 2008 with the kids and loved it, now we have a pull behind travel trailer. You will have a great time! Be sure to enjoy what the Fort has to offer in addition to park time, we did not do this our first trip and are looking forward to enjoying time at the Fort over Spring Break!

Hey Karen we are in Dahlonega. We will be there April 3 thru 10. Thanks for all the positives. We are starting to get more excited. We are taking our bikes. Would like to take our golf cart. Does any one know what rental on a golf cart cost?http://www.wdwinfo.com/images/smilies/yay.gif

Not going to believe this, but we lived in Dahlonega for 24 years before moving back to Gainesville in 2006. We will be there from April 9-16.

Loretta says you can't go to Disney without her! LOL

You know, I actually thought that might be you & Greg.

We're actually leaving Gainesville sometime in the afternoon on the 8th and driving until Robert gets tired and then get up early on the 9th to check-in.

We're just going to chill and check everything out on Friday (our 1st time at FW too) so maybe we can get together and say hello.

Karen
