Not sure where to post this.

1. Does anyone know what type of oil they use to fry the fries in at any of the counter service places?

2. Do you know if they use that oil for other things like fish or shrimp?

3. Does anyone know what the ingredients are in the gluten free hamburger buns?

If you are asking for the purposes of medical conditions or allergies on the part of yourself or someone in your party, you might want to check the DISAbilities board with regard to contacting WDW Special Diets.

In most places they have told us they use vegetable oil. We ask because our son is allergic to soy so unless it is sunflower or canola, he doesn't eat any of the fries at any CS.
Can't help you with any of the other questions.

I'm not sure what they use, but I am highly allergic to shellfish, so much so I can't even give a friendly smooch after they've eaten. I have never had any reaction at any cs place, so I'm fairly certain they don't share cooking bins.

For TS places, you can call ahead to make sure precautions are taken.

Thanks for the replies and moving this to the appropriate board.

In the past, Disney always used vegetable oil on their fries. A friend went recently and said they changed to canola oil. I haven't read that anywhere so I thought I would check. DS is allergic to soy so vegetable oil is out.

I also wanted to see if the buns contain soy.

All the TS we ate at said they used canola for the french fries but none of the CS could confirm canola. They all said vegetable oil.

Again, don't know about the buns either.

According to the document I received from WDW Special Diets that was updated on October 29, 2009 for "Standard Menu Offerings" they use high oleic canola oil. BUT the french fries MAY already contain soybean oil. So you would need to check the book at each dining location.

Sorry but I am not very familiar with soy allergies. Does your son have to avoid soy lecithin as well? If so, he needs to avoid the restaurants that use the frozen hamburgers. My sheet says these are at limited locations. Again, the allergy book at the locations will be able to tell you if they are safe.

The AllergyFree Country Fried Chicken Tenderloins do not appear to contain any soy, but you may want to double check the label to be 100% certain. I don't know if soy is like some other allergens and hides under other names. These do contain corn if that is an issue.

The buns are supposed to be safe because they use Ener-G Tapioca Hotdog & Hamburger buns. Again, check when you are there just to be certain. All Ener-G products are free of wheat/gluten, milk, eggs, soy, peanuts & tree nuts. I love that company!

The Enjoy Life Chocolate Bark/Dark, Boom Chocolate, Chocolate Chip Cookies & Rice Crispy Chocolate Bar are all listed as soy free.

Hope this helps.

I am traveling with my extended family next month to Disney. We have 2 who are lactose intolerant, 2 with tree nut allergies, one allergic to shrimp, and one who may be allergic to sesame (she's also lactose intolerant and allergic to nuts). Feeding this family is quite a chore.
I emailed Disney special diets and they sent me a ton of information about the foods served at different venues. They also had me fill out a form with dietary details for all of us which they then shared with the places we have ADR's. I've heard back from one of the restaurants (executive chef at Bluezoo emailed me) to let me know that their bread isn't safe for nut allergic people, but they can take care of the rest of our needs.
My experience dealing with Disney for our dietary needs has been great so far.
The email address is WDW.Special.Diets@disney.com

Thanks for all the great information; especially the email address. I just sent a note off to them.

I used to bring my son's food in for him but now that he is 12, I don't think I could possibly lug around the amount of food he consumes in one day. :lmao:

In case you loose this thread, there is a link to the email address that was given by another poster in post # 3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread. (There is a link to that thread in my signature).
In post #3 of that thread, you will also find some additional resources, including email addresses for diet information for each park. There is also a link to the WDW official webpage of information about special dietary needs. That includes a list of counter service restaurants at each park that are most able to meet special needs.

It is recommended that you contact WDW close to your trip because information can change.

Thank you so much for the link. It has been a wealth of information. I have sent off a few more emails to specific people. I know table service restaurants are very accommodating if notified in advance but because we only live an hour away, we plan on making impromptu trips. I would much rather rely on counter service. If it doesn't work out, I will have to bring along food to get him by. I know there were things he could eat there just three years ago when we had AP's. We haven't been since those passes expired. His allergies have improved and with more and more people having allergies, I am sure Disney has also improved their selections. Hopefully we will find enough to keep him happy and safe.

When I asked about possible cross contamination in the fryer system, I was told it is possible. All fryers in a park use the same filtration system, so it's my understanding that the oil can be taken from 1 restaurant (who may serve one of your allergens like shellfish) put through the filtration system and end up in another restaurant which may not serve 1 of your allergens. For this reason, we do not do anything deep fried at CS restaurants. We have tree nut and shellfish allergies.

Some CS may be able to accomodate cooking them and some may not. This however does require extra time. When you talk to Brenda Bennett, she will help you answer this.

certain places in each parks has totally dedicated fryers for fries. I am not sure of all of them right now but, I have a list somewhere.. They should be able to send you that information.

Update:
So far, I am not impressed with what Disney has sent me. I asked for specific ingredients on a couple items and they didn't send me those. I told them I was only interested in counter service items and they sent me stuff for table service. They went on and on in the email about sending them the specific dates of our visit and filling out a form to submit to them so the table service restaurants would be ready for him. I told them in the original email that we only live an hour away and plan on making impromptu trips - hence the need for the counter service information.

They also sent me a pre-made list of "safe" foods but nowhere does it say why they are safe. One is a location list of safe chicken tenders. How do I know they are safe for my son? It doesn't list any ingredients at all. :confused3

This is the special diet email address. I haven't heard back from Debbie yet so I hope she is more helpful.

Thanks for the french fry info. We will skip the fries. Honestly, my son has never been able to have french fries out in public so that was just some pipe dream of mine. It is just to risky with cross contamination and different oils used. No biggie.

I really would love to find out what is in the gluten free buns and the very veggie garden burger. Those are the two things I am hoping he will be able to fill up on. I also asked if they could confirm if Rice Dream ice cream was still available at some of the shops but they didn't answer that question either.

I'd keep asking the questions. I agree, I don't think their counter service information is useful. They tend to lean towards, because they are always changing, please consult the ingredient book at the counter. THis makes it a little hard to pre-plan.

I also think their lists are hard to interpret what it means. Do you have this sheet; 'Food Allergy/Dietary Reference Sheet'? It's 3 pages. It's lists brands and ingredients of some allergy items and what counter services you can find them at.

For instance, the breaded country-fried chicken tenderloins are the allergy friendly food. They are from AllergyFree Foods and it lists that it does not contain, wheat/gluten, egg, milk, peanuts, tree nuts or soy - does contain corn. You can find them at least at 1 quick service locations in each of the parks.

It lists the rolls, but I don't see the veggie burger.

Keep e-mailing though. When you get Brenda Bennett to answer she is really the best there. If she doesn't answer my question enough, I ask again. I've even asked her to go back to the vendor to ask questions on cross contamination. She eventually has an answer.

Good luck.

I really would love to find out what is in the gluten free buns...

Earlier I posted about the buns and all the things they don't include. You can go to EnerG's website to see all of the ingredients they are currently using. As others suggested it is best that you check each visit in case manufacturers change ingredients or they change suppliers.

WDW uses the EnerG Tapioca buns.

I did check and they are safe. I just wanted Disney to confirm that they are the same ones. From what I have read, there are some products made by companies that are for institutional use only and not the same ones that consumers can buy off the shelf. The Gardenburger brand that Disney uses is one example. Hopefully they are the regular EnerG buns listed on their website. That would make me happy!
