o'hana

Sorry you didn't enjoy your dinner at Ohanás. I'm still planning on trying the new menu with an open mind during out trip next month.

We haven't been there since the menu changed - but we can't wait to try the new items. While DH will miss the fried rice - the potatoes sound great and we are huge fans of Banana's Foster - so we are looking forward to desert also!!! :cheer2:

Dinner at Ohana's was the very first meal we had on our very first trip to WDW this past February. I'm from Hawaii so I really didn't know what to expect (would the place be cheesy and annoying, would the food be icky, etc . . .) but we were pleasantly surprised. We liked the atmosphere and the activity (singing, dancing, we did the Hukilau in WDW!!) and most of the food was great. We are not big meat eaters so we did not care for the sausage or turkey but the beef was juicy and tender. The chicken and shrimp were ono (yummy in Hawaiian) and the salad, potatoes, and dessert broke da mouth (were super duper yummy)!! We have decided to make Ohana's our traditional first stop and plan to make adrs for this coming January!!

We went to Ohana for the first time last week and were so disappointed!

The meat: Beef and turkey were okay, pork and sausage were really fatty. The pork was literally more fat that meat. Yuck! Wings were nothing special. I don't eat shrimp so I didn't try those.

Sides: Salad was plain, potatoes were just like regular scalloped potatoes - mushy and cheesy like you can make out of the box at home. I'm convinced they were the exact same potatoes we had with breakfast at Akershus. Didn't care for thew chips - they seemed like flour tortilla chips and of the dips the peanut dip was okay, but nothing you'd sit there and fill up on.

Dessert: This was good. Not great like many other desserts at WDW, but definitely a welcome sight after everything else that night.

But almost worse than the food was the service! OMG, I have never had such rotten service!

Our "cousin" Rudy got our drinks, came over with the meat once and then never returned. He had 5 tables in our area but only seemed to service 3 of them. We never got seconds of meat, while others in the section next to us (with a different "cousin") were constantly offered more of everything. We had only taken a little of each meat to taste it, because it was our first visit and we didn't know what we'd like, so we really would've appreciated more. If not for the dessert, we would've left hungry.

We had to flag down someone else for refills, and no one got DD involved in the kids stuff. She really wanted to luau, so I finally hunted down the woman doing it and we stood there until it started. Around us, other "cousins" were explaining to guests how the kids stuff worked and bringing the kids over to luau, etc. I think Rudy was on break. :sad2:

We had to wait forever to pay, finally flagging someone after sitting there waiting for 20 minutes +. I noticed then that the table next to us - which also hadn't seen a return from Rudy - was also on DDP. They were waiting for their check too and looked every bit as annoyed as I was.

So, not only was the food bad, IMHO, but this was the only restaurant at which I felt like a second class citizen because of the DDP. Ironically, it was also the cheapest TS we ate! I got the impression that Rudy didn't lift a finger when he knew his 18% was guaranteed.

Needless to say, I cancelled our ressie for October. We won't be going back.

I am no longer a fan of 'Ohana. I hope one day it can be the favorite it used to be. I miss the rice, wontons, green beans, grilled shrimp and bread and I find that the replacements are "cheaper" and of far lesser quality. I enjoyed the dessert, but it is not enough to make me want to come back. It used to be a favorite and I like the atmosphere, so I may try breakfast, but the dinner changes were a huge disappointment. I was open minded and tried it, but never again. Here's my review.

I'll give you my opinion dish by dish

Bread

No more bread, no replacement, nothing to judge

Salad

Mixed greens with honey lime dressing- same- yummy, sweet flavorful dressing

Starters

Wonton chips- different- the worst replacement- 1 ate exactly two bites, stale, flavorless greasy huge chinese noodles, nothing like the old crispy shrimp and veggie wontons

Dips- different- all were good, esp. the peanut, which came in handy for the meats

Shrimp- new- delicious, but awkward to peel shell-on shrimp coated in a sticky sauce

Wings- same- still yummy, good coriander and honey flavors in sauce

Skewers

Steak- good, but you could tell it's not a high quality cut of meat

Pork- so-so, dried out

Turkey- good

Sausage- horrible, bland, tasted like soy bologna, ate one bite

Sides

Scalloped Potatoes- okay, nothing special, tried a few bites, but decided not to waste my calories, they just didn't go with the skewers or Polynesian theme at all, much preferred the fried rice

Vegetable Stir Fry- hard and inedible, practically a salad of hard raw veggies in a warm sauce

Dessert

Bread pudding and ice cream with bananas foster caramel sauce- the only improvement- actually better than the pineapple and caramel. I ate it all!! (I give credit where credit is due!)

IMO, the wonton chips, sausage and potatoes should be replaced immediately. The veggies seem hit or miss, so they need to get their technique down with length of cooking time. ( I do miss those green beans, though! They were a favorite dish!)

I know some people like the potatoes, even though I think rice or even lo mein would be much better, so I would be willing to go back if even just the 2 most horrible items- the sausage and wonton chips- were replaced. I think they need to negotiate with a better provider for the sausage, because there are some great sausages out there. As far as wonton chips, they need to bring back the old shrimp and veggie ones! Or at least give us spring rolls, or egg rolls or crab rangoon , or something that has something more to it than fried flour and water paste.

I did love the dessert, and I used to adore 'Ohana before the change, but it's just a big disappointment right now.

Sorry I can't be more positive, but I am glad I tried it myself, even though I won't go back with the current menu. At least I know.

I was watching a Disney Wedding special this weekend from about 2 years ago. They had a chef from 'Ohana boasting how the bread had been served there for over 30 years. It was delicious. Very disappointing.

Yes, the special was a reminder of how good the meal used to be. The bread, the wontons, the shrimp, yum!

And, they used to have six different skewers. Let's see if I can remember. Steak (good in peanut sauce), turkey (good in old fruit sauce), shrimp, salmon, two kinds of sausage... what were they?

we plan to go there on our July trip- can you tell me if my son doesn't order anything -will I be charged for him- He's picky and I can tell from the menu he won't even attempt to try anything.

We just ate at O'hana last week(dining report coming soon), and it is still our favorite restaurant at WDW. IMO, the menu items are great from start to finish. Our servers were excellent. We absolutely enjoyed all of the food and the atmosphere was as fun as ever.

In spite of any review I read we still plan on going. Also I'll add looking forward to it. :thumbsup2

I agree totally, the replacements are "cheaper" and the quality has gone down hill. We also experienced poor service.

I am very happy to see all the positive reviews. This will be our first trip to 'Ohana. We will be there on July 22nd. We are very excited and can't wait. I will make sure to give a report when we get back that night. Keep the reviews coming!!
