Ohana: Harsh review on WDWinfo

We have a 9:45pm reservation (only time available for dinner during our stay) next week. I booked it because it seemed to be a 'must do" and I am taking kids and it's our first time at Disney. It sounded fun and I thought the kids might eat the food. The time we got is not the best, but I don't mind it if the dinner/experience is worthwhile. If it is not, then I'd rather skip it and eat earlier somewhere else.

For those who were disappointed, was it the food or the experience? I am expecting loud and chaotic. I'm going with kids so I never expect quiet at dinner. The food is more my priority. It's not worth it to me if the food is terrible. We are on the dining plan but 1TS is as good here as another place and I don't want to waste it on bad food.

My husband and I went with my family and my little sister who is 6 and she LOVED the entrainment!!! She is very outgoing and loves to be seen, so this was right up her alley. They learn how to do the hula and go around and put lays on people.

About the food, we all loved the food. We are all meat lovers so it worked well for us. My little sister loved the noodles and shrimp, and much more. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the broccoli. The salad is delicious and the dessert was SO SO good!!!!

Oh and one more thing, the first time we went we had a reservation at 9:40 my DH and I went there around 9:00 to check in and walk around the resort, they ended up setting us right away. It couldn't hurt to go early to check in.

I hope this helps with your decision

The problem when we went was the service was bad and some of the meats were dry. The waiter brought my daughter a hot dog and fries because she didn't like any of the food. He only came back once to refill our drinks and that was when he brought the hot dog. My daughter had fun learning a hula dance though.

Although the review is quite accurate, I don't think it belongs in an area of the site which is intended to give a general description of the restaurants and menus.
Opinion (as in a review) probably belongs elsewhere. I don't recall any other such review/opinion in any other area of the menus. Probably not fair to Ohana to have it there.

We love "Ohana. Have had fun and good food every time. I had to go back and read the "review" as I haven't read the information dining section in a long time. I think its harsh but to each his own. It is not supposed to be fine dining just fun. We like the activities even though our kids are now 14 and 9 and don't do the parade. Is it loud? Yes.

More ADRs for me there when people start reading it. :rotfl2:

I'm not so sure I'd consider that a review, so much as an opinionated description (I looked at another menu, for a restaurant which gets a lot of complaints, but apparently whoever wrote the 'blurb' for 'Ohana either hasn't eaten there or doesn't consider it worthy of description ;)).

To the poster above whose children like BBQ meats - if you live near, or within reasonable driving distance of, Saugus, please PM me... and no, I'm NOT inviting anyone to my home for a meal! :teeth:

well the description was imo an adult without children. Which is why I have it booked for my ds 12th bday. He should love it if that guy hates it just for pure spite. LOL:rotfl:

Which is I guess my point. Ohana seems to be the only restaurant that has the opinionated description.

Please don't let other people's opinions of Ohana keep you from going. You gotta try it for yourself. While some posters label the review as "accurate," you have to keep in mind that it is only accurate for their individual experiences. We've eaten at Ohana twice and had a great experience both times. The food was really good (and there was lots of it) and its just a fun atmosphere. Yes, some of the entertainment is corny, but so what. It can still bring a smile to you face. ;) Try it for yourself - if you don't like it, don't go back.

I would never let a negative review stop me from trying a new restaurant since likes and dislikes are very individual.

With that said, I think the review of 'Ohana is too kind. We went there in February and will definitely not be going back. The salad was inedible due to the extremely sweet dressing. Dumplings were the best part of the meal, except for the turkey which DD liked. We didn't have a problem with our servier offering us seconds - our problem was that we didn't want seconds! I was really looking forward to the shrimp but found them way too spicy for my taste. But that is a very individual thing - what I find inedible a person who likes spicier food might think is yummy. The steak was so-so.

The lounge singer was just annoying. But it was kind of cute to watch the kids.

I think that if the menu interests you, go and form your own opnion. I love some places that regularly get bad reviews here. And dislike some places that get great reviews.

I do agree that the description is pretty negative. It is a review where a description is more in order.

We REALLY enjoyed Ohana back in 2007 and it is on the list to do again in 2010.

You can't really base if you will like a restaurant on a handful of reviews. To give you an example, we enjoyed Ohana a LOT more the Le Cellier :confused3 . You have to decide for you...

This review is right on as far as we are concerned. It is one of those highly over rated places!

We went for the first time last year, and I also felt a little dissapointed. The food in my opinion was ok, some of it was very good, and some I didn't care for. The dessert was amazing! But I do agree that it felt very chaotic, maybe my little ones were just tired and it added to the stress. My DH loved it and wanted to go back this year, but I convinced him to try other restaurants that we haven't tried before. I will give this a 2nd try as it wasn't all bad, but not what I was expecting after all the rave reviews here on the DIS.

I love hearing what Kevin from wdwinfo.com and the Disunplugged Podcast has to say about restaurants. He reviews them well and makes it known that his reviews are "snapshots in time" and representative of his experience only.

Therefore, I would never let a harsh review keep me from trying something I wanted to try! We did Ohana for breakfast in December and had a great time! The Mickey waffles were plentiful, that Stich juice is so yummy and the character interaction was great!

On the flip side, he's RAVED about places that we've tried and hated. But I don't blame him for it. ;)

Go and see for yourself. We went in spite of Kevin's review and had a great time!

WOW I cannot belive that review..... Ohana's is a MUST do for my family every trip. We have never had a bad experence, and have been there many times. I don't get it.....:confused3

That shouldn't be there either. Those menus and restaurant "descriptions" should be just that. They are accessed via a menus link--not the reviews sub-board. Or the Podcast where a review is specifically mentioned and expected
Maybe EVERY restaurant should be described in the opinionated style, to keep the playing field level. To blast a couple of places out of several hundred isn't fair!!! Nor would rave opinions be fair.
Am I the only person who feels this way???

ITA with you.
When I go to the "Menus" site, I want to read the menus. If I wanted to read opinions, I'd go to the reviews forum.

I don't think it belongs with the restaurant menu but the review is accurate in my opinion. DD and I ate there last Sept and the meal was beyond awful. From the waiter to the food (practically thrown at us) to the truly annoying lounge act, we couldn't get out of there fast enough. This was the first time I wanted to ask for my TS credits back, that bad. I love the convenience to MK but its Kona Cafe for us from now on.
