'Ohana for non-red meat eaters?

Hi guys!

My mom and I have always wanted to try 'Ohana since everyone here on the DIS raves about it so much, but neither of us eat red meat. My mom would eat the chicken and shrimp, but not the pork or steak. I would only eat the chicken and pork (the sole type of red meat I sometimes enjoy) since I dislike shrimp in addition to steak. Is it possible to call ahead and ask to substitute just a couple of items for each of us for something else or would we have to eat entirely vegetarian if we make any type of request?

I managed to snag a dinner reservation for our upcoming trip in December, but am wondering if it is still worth trying 'Ohana given our food restrictions. Maybe we could just fill up on the two types of meat we like instead of eating all four? We would enjoy all of the apps/sides/dessert.

Thoughts? :listen:

To start, I don't eat red meat and rarely eat chicken. When I go to Ohana (which is at least once every trip), the only things I will eat are the bread, salad, vegetable, noodles and shrimp from the skewer. They will bring out as much as you would like to eat of anything (but save room for dessert - so good!). I never leave hungry and have never requested other options to fill in the fact I don't like the meat skewers.

I think you should give the restaurant a try! I think it is worth it for the bread and the dessert but that's just me

Just let your server know what you want. If you tell him (her) no red meat, they'll just bring out what you want. We didn't have a problem last time we ate there.

Thanks for the replies! We'll definitely give it a shot.. I'm sure we'll love it!

And I thought pork was red meat? :scratchin

'Ohana is my fave Disney restaurant and I don't eat red meat. In fact, I only eat the chicken there (allergic to shrimp too). I just tell the servers to just bring me chicken and they load me up. It's sooo good that I don't miss anything else. The chicken wings are fantastic too. You will have more than enough food even with just doing as I do.

We ate at 'Ohana back the first week of June and even though I did eat some of the steak I ended up eating a ton of the chicken. Whatever seasoning they have on it is amazing! The chicken was moist and flavorful and I just kept requesting more. Between the chicken, noodles, broccoli and dumplings I was more than stuffed at the end of the evening.

Ohana is our favorite Disney restaurant and on most of our visits there we eat very little of the skewers because we've gorged on the salad, dumplings, noodles, wings and salad!

"Pork... the other white meat"

Apparently I can't remember anything of value anymore... but I know tv jingles!:headache:

My daughter-in-law doesn't eat red meat (including pork, lol) and she enjoys eating there when we go. She eats the chicken and shrimp and loves the wings.

Aren't the dumplings (my favorite thing there!) filled with pork mixture?

I always considered pork to be white meat. :confused3

I think you can find plenty of stuff to eat there-- I don't think it would be right to ask for official substitutions just because you don't care for a few things on the menu. But what you DO eat should be good!

We were there two weeks ago. I also only ate the chicken and shrimp (the dumplings are pork). It was all SO yummy. The bread, salad, wings, noodles and shrimp were all so good, I didn't have room for anything else---well, except dessert:)

When they come around with the skewers, you just tell then what you want or don't want. No worries!

My DD8 only ate salad, noodles and the veggies. And had plain vanilla ice cream for dessert. They are very accomodating.

I dont eat the pork or the beef there (not because I dont eat beef, i just dont like steak) and ive never been hungry. They start you with salad and bread, then you get chicken wings and little dumpling type things, lo mein noodles and broccoli, and then they bring around the skewers and they will give you as much as youi want. Usually 1 piece of chicken and a few shrimp in addition to all the side dishes is more than enough for me!

The chicken that posters keep referring to is turkey.

Each time we've eaten there, our server tells us it is turkey.

You're right of course; it is turkey. I always think of it as being chicken though. :confused3

Oh yes there are so many other things they bring out so not eatting the pork or steak will still leave plenty of food! You can ask for more of anything! The wings, noodles, salad, veggie, chicken( I think you said she eats shrimp?) plus dessert will fill her up!

Actually sometime around June of 2010 they changed the turkey to chicken. Not sure if that was a temporary switch or if its still the chicken. When we were in WDW in June of 2010 we were told they had just switched from turkey to chicken. When we visited again in Oct. 2010, and again in March of 2011, it was definitely chicken. Our servers told us it was chicken and it tasted like chicken.

Hmmm, ok. Pretty sure ours was turkey this past June.

Also, the DIS menu here for 'Ohana (updated Aug. 2011) states it is turkey.
