Oh the Tragedy! No Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake this time! Updates x 5 9/30

The PB&J idea is so funny at Maras that's so cute! Yep your Michael should of gotten a pulled pork sandwich at Flametree BBQ but you did share so maybe next time : )
Looking forward to reading more about California Grill but a beautiful table, view and company

Brenda, I admire your restraint in not demanding the Ooey Gooey debacle be corrected IMMEDIATELY! I definitely would have looked like Sheldon had I been cheated out of that awesomeness (is that actually a word?) Anyway, I had faith in you and figured the only way you would have missed out on this heavenly creation is because you were cheated! I guessed #4 on Barb's quiz. It was the only logical explanation. ;)

'Ohana is the one restaurant at Disney my DH swears he will never try again. We had a very bad experience there a few years ago and even the mention of it elicits a grimace and a firm "never again!". Like you, the only things I really enjoyed was the bread, pot stickers, chicken and dessert. It looks like you all had a great time though, and that always makes any meal better. :thumbsup2

Love the photos of Cali Grill! It truly is a lovely restaurant. Both your entree and Michael's look delicious! I'm looking forward to part 2.

Great updates Brenda! :goodvibes

Here at WDW now and yesterday tried Ooey gooey toffee cake for the first time and can I just say - it is a little piece of heaven on a plate! I ordered one piece for my family to share and after a few bites in I was fighting them off with my fork!!! I can usually take a few bites of a dessert and then push it aside but not this one!!! I am planning on making a ressie later in the week just to go back for the dessert again! It was AWESOME!!!! Thanks for your recommendation!!

You've sold me on trying Flame Tree. Your sandwich looks great!

Glad you had another great meal at Cali Grill. Michael's scallops are almost too pretty to eat.

We love FT BBQ and the setting is always very relaxing. It's a shame the CG has gotten rid of sourdough bread :(

funny you mentioned the bread at Tony's. we ate at Tony's for the first time lsast trip, for lunch. do you know at lunch you get no bread?:confused3

i nebo got the chicken parmesan, I got the shrimp scampi. it just seemed off to eat at an Italian restaurant with no bread. not even garlic bread!

waht a great view from your calif. grill table!

What a view flame tree has! That turkey sandwich looks very yummy! Hmm, we may have to go there.

Omg, I'm drooling over your California grill dishes! Rich is too. I predicted he'd be getting the pork 2 ways & when I showed him your pics, his mouth dropped open. :) I cannot wait for our visit! And part 2 of your evening!

Flame Tree Barbeque has the best seating area of all the parks. I love the view from there. And the pulled pork is good, too. :)

That was nice that your son and his gf could join you. Were they staying at WDW, too, or just traveling in the area?

That view of the castle is amazing. I would think that the view draws a lot of people to the restaurant. I had read some bad reviews of California Grill when it first reopened. But everything I have read lately has been very positive. It probably helps to have Hunter along for the little extras. :)

Pulled pork sandwiches and a great view of EE are pretty much the best as far as CS dining at AK park.

My son and his girlfriend were actually traveling to the South Florida area to see her family so they asked to stop by and see us. We figured if they were in Orlando they may as well stay a night so we gave them a choice of a non-Disney hotel or to stay on-site at WDW. They chose to stay on-site. A kid after my own heart!!! (There were not a lot of choices when we booked last minute so we go them a room at ASM.)

I read a lot of bad reviews as well when Cali Grill reopened. We were very skeptical in December but we've had a great experience. Hunter definitely helped with his connections.

I was looking at the menu and the Pork Two Ways caught my eye instantly. I am a huge fan of pork belly! I thought that was perfect when I saw that you ordered it, so we could see what the dish looked like.

I am a new fan of pork belly. The name didn't sound appealing but the first time I tasted it, it was wonderful. It reminds me of all the good parts of a port roast with a little caramelized fatty part. That sounds gross but it was actually good.

I had the pork pre-refurbishment and it was delicious. We have not been back yet but maybe next year ;)

I think they improved the pork dish post re-furb. I loved it before but I like it even better now that it has expanded the pork selection for the dish. It is not just one dimensional any longer.

Reading this while sitting here sipping wine and trying not to eat is a very hard prospect when faced with Danishes, BBQ, and pork. And no matter how oily that focaccia was it looks like the most amazing piece of bread my wine filled eyes have ever seen.

I had no idea flame tree took TiW, will have to try and remember that for next trip.

Cali grill sounds amazing as always. Haven't been post rehab but pre rehab meals were nothing short of amazing. Those scallops look awesome, thought with only 3 I'm sure your hubby was greatful for the pork belly side dish. Can't wait for the rest,...

Ha ha! Your wine-filled eys! :rotfl2: Things do tend to have a different perspective with a glass.. or two.. or more ... of wine!

Yes, Flame Tree accepts TiW. I believe all the counter service locations do at AK since they only have a couple table service options.

Although the scallops were large it isn't really enough for a big guy to fill up on without some other food being shoved his way. It is more of a petite portion if you ask me.

I will have to tell Mark about that PBJ at Mara since we are staying at AKL for three nights and plan on eating there on our arrival night.

I loved seeing your review on Flame Tree. We haven't been in awhile and it's on the schedule also for September.

I am drooling all over looking at the photos of Michael's scallops. I love scallops and those just look absolutely fabulous. We have yet to get to California Grill...I never seem to quite fit it in anywhere. I can't remember whose but I did see a very poor review of it yet. But I can't imagine those scallops being bad.

Ha ha! If Mark makes a PB&J at The Mara I want to see a photo!

I can only eat FT BBQ without Em now. She's not a fan of BBQ so I don't see it as an option on our next trip. I'll miss it. :sad2:

There were a lot of bad reviews for Cali Grill once they reopened. You would think that they'd be better than ever so I'm not sure what happened. We've been fortunate the last few visits that everything has been stellar. There are high expectations for that place though since it is among the best of the Signatures. I've not tasted the scallops so I can't confirm but they look amazing.

I have gone to WDW too many times in the heat and I always overlook Flame Tree Barbecue, but I think its time to revisit in the cooler weather and sit at the exact same table with that perfect view.

I have not been to the Cali Grille since the refurb and it really looks beautiful. Those scallops look divine!

I didn't realize your son was on this trip. Cool!

Bring on the rest of the meal!

It's not a refreshing prospect to dine outside at FT BBQ in the middle of summer! It was ok in April but I'm sure most times of the year you'd miss the a/c. But that view!! Pretty worth it.

Although I've eaten many times pre-refub, so once I read the awful post re-furb reviews I was a bit nervous to try it again. My worries were unfounded. Again, maybe having Hunter a friend of the chef helped us out.

I was excited that our middle son was able to join us for one night. They had to head out to see her family the next day so we didn't see them for long. A short time is better than nothing!

Isn't PB&J a great idea? ;)

Next time I suspect Michael may order a sandwich AND ribs. I can't guarantee that I'd be willing to share every time!

Thanks! I wanted to allow Paula to post her Cali Grill update before I continue since there was something delivered to celebrate their special occasion.

Brenda, I admire your restraint in not demanding the Ooey Gooey debacle be corrected IMMEDIATELY! I suppose at the time it was a big deal to miss the toffee cake but I'm sure my waistband appreciated the fact that I passed on dessert. Next time... no mistaking my order will be clear... and repeated... and repeated again.

Your DH is not the only one that doesn't feel the need to dine at 'Ohana. Barb, our travel companion would not go back there after one or more bad experiences. It's not a favorite so I won't miss it next trip.

Thanks and I look forward to sharing part 2 shortly. I remember you were one of the unlucky folks that had a less than stellar experience at Cali Grill post re-furb. right?

Lol about the PB&J! I think he did get it from the Mara too! And AOA! Lol, cheapie!

Corey has made that practice famous! People everywhere will want to replicate his meal. I think it was brilliant!

OH I'M JEALOUS!!! That's awesome. I'm glad that you are a new fan of that lovely dessert. If they would make the toffee cake available to-go it may be a very popular item. Or better yet...ditch the funnel cake stand and have a toffee cake stand! I'd go for that.

I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip!

You've sold me on trying Flame Tree. Your sandwich looks great!

Glad you had another great meal at Cali Grill. Michael's scallops are almost too pretty to eat.

Hi Rachel! I'm a long time fan of the pulled pork sandwich. I have a hard time switching things up once I land on something so delicious.

Ha ha! Those scallops were certainly well presented. And colorful.

We love FT BBQ and the setting is always very relaxing. It's a shame the CG has gotten rid of sourdough bread :(

Hi new mommy! I hope all is well.

I agree, that sourdough bread at Cali Grill was fabulous. The focaccia is ok but the rolls are not good at all. Such a shame that it was a step down with the new bread basket. My opinion of course.

funny you mentioned the bread at Tony's. we ate at Tony's for the first time lsast trip, for lunch. do you know at lunch you get no bread?:confused3

I don't think I remembered that there's no bread at lunch at Tony's but then again for lunch I've only had the flatbread. I wonder if they even have the option of sending some to the table like at Liberty Tree Tavern. So odd. They need some customer feedback on that one. :)

Thanks! It was a nice view.

I LOVE Yachtsman...sorry about the shoe leather! :(

Hi ChrissyBeth. I've loved Yachtsman in the past but the food and service is leaving something to be desired. I take complete blame for not sending the meat back so it likely was "fixable". We'll likely be back so I'm interested to see how that works out.

Hi Jennifer! Flame Tree is still a favorite for the food. That dining area by the lake blends the great food and great view for a perfect fast lunch.

I predict that you guys will LOVE Cali Grill. It truly is one of the best restaurants that Disney has to offer. :)

And with that folks... I should have an update up by tomorrow.

there wasn't an option to send bread cause I asked the server about bread. he said not at lunch.. weird. write on!

California Grill Dinner Part 2 - May 1, 2014

When I last updated.... we had finished dinner and were contemplating dessert. There was dessert planned; however, it was a special treat in honor of a very special occasion.....A visit to the table from Chef Eddie which preceded the special surprise!

DSCN0913.jpg

Hunter had made arrangements for a very special dessert in honor of their 10th wedding anniversary. The kitchen brought out this lovely cake while we were in our post dinner stupor. It was special ordered for the occasion.

The cake was beautifully decorated and was topped with none other than Mickey and his gal Minnie. So adorable.

DSCN0917.jpg

DSCN0919.jpg

This was a vanilla cake with a chocolate mousse filling and fondant frosting.
DSCN0980.jpg

Coincidently, it was the birthday of our son’s girlfriend that day. There was also a special birthday crème brulee presented for her birthday. She appreciated the recognition.

DSCN0928.jpg

Disney’s Hollywood Studios was having their 25th anniversary party that night and we could see the special fireworks show from California Grill. We went out on the viewing platform for a better view of the show which looked spectacular even if we couldn’t hear the soundtrack.

Our son and his girlfirend had been up since 1am when they drove from Texas so we knew they wouldn’t be able to stay for the 11pm Wishes. We were very glad that we were able to spend a little time with them while we were both in FL at the same time.

Wishes fireworks:

We had a wonderful evening and were very glad that Paula and Hunter invited us to participate in their special celebration dinner. Chef Eddie was welcoming and friendly. We looked forward to seeing him yet again this trip when we returned a few nights later.

Using TiW we saved $41.96 off the dinner bill.

Next Up: Boma Breakfast

Boma Breakfast - Part 1 - Friday May 2, 2014

DSCN1112.jpg

We had plans this morning to have breakfast with our son and his girlfriend before they had to leave town. Deciding where to eat was a dilemma since I wanted to have the most impressive venue that Disney can offer for this one shared breakfast. Ideally, I thought a character breakfast would be great but there were no ADRs available a week out. Barb suggested Boma since it would allow them to see the beautiful AKL resort. Sold! There was plenty of availability for a party of 5 a week out. Seriously people, this is either a hidden gem or folks just don’t care to go out of their way to dine there in the morning. Either way, I was thrilled that it worked out.

DSCN1119.jpg

We were started with the delicious jungle juice which has unlimited refills. Good thing since one glass just isn’t enough.

Glorious Mickey waffles
DSCN1181.jpg

I ended up with 3 plates and a bowl. I pretty much hog the table since I don’t like to mix my foods – you know, the savory can’t mingle with the sweet and the sweets have to be separated by syrup versus non-syrup items. It takes skills to juggle this many plates at one time.

DSCN1189.jpg

Michael made a stop at the omelet station to get me a veggie omelet so that meant I only had to balance a bowl of oatmeal and two plates with Mickey waffles, grilled asparagus, pap, and scrambled eggs.

So let’s talk about the breakfast options that I ate. This trip I was determined to eat a few new items that were more ethnic. With that in mind, I chose pap as the new item to expand my dining horizons. I’m not sure if pap is meant to be topped with anything or if you eat it plain since it is rather boring and devoid of much flavor. But it wasn’t entirely horrible so that completed my little experiment.

The grilled asparagus was tasty and the omelet was a little overcooked for my taste but I appreciate a made to order omelet so it was fine.

DSCN1184.jpg

DSCN1186.jpg

I have no idea why I keep spooning the scrambled eggs with goat cheese and spinach onto my plate each trip because I take one bite and remember how much I don’t care for it. I suppose it looks better than it tastes. Maybe next time I’ll remember the ick factor before I waste any food.

The Mickey waffles were a MUST DO! And of course, I adore those things. Waffle LOVE at its finest.

DSCN1183.jpg

Oatmeal, you can’t mess that up (unless you are The Wave…) this was very good.
DSCN1187.jpg

Everyone enjoyed breakfast so I was glad that Boma was our breakfast choice for the kids. Using our TiW card we saved $17.59.

Next Up: Chefs de France Lunch

Chefs de France Lunch - Friday May 2, 2014

We had a lunch ADR at Chefs de France with Hunter, Paula, and Beth (Couchy) who had arrived for a long weekend of Disney fun.

Philippe, the restaurant Manager for the France restaurants recognized me and came over to give me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Right in front of Michael – so bold. He jokingly apologized and said, I’m French you know! Yeah, Michael had heard.

Here’s our photo with my rain poncho hair.
DSCN1371.jpg

We were seated and soon after were presented with complimentary glasses of Kir from Philippe. That apology from 3 trips ago sure was going far. I believe he had made amends and I was now in the “I owe you” category!

The look on the guys’ faces is amusing!

DSCN1373.jpg

DSCN1375.jpg

Cheers to dining with Dis friends French style!
DSCN1376.jpg

We were started with the fresh baguettes and our drink orders. I love the bread and even more so when it is slathered with the little foil pats of butter.

DSCN1390.jpg

Menu:
DSCN1381.jpg

DSCN1382.jpg

DSCN1385.jpg

Starting with appetizers, I went with the always delicious French onion soup while Michael ordered the lobster bisque since he ordered off the prix fixe (3 courses for $25.99) menu. I failed to get a photo of his soup since I was so busy chatting with the gals.

French Onion Soup: topped with Gruyere cheese $7.99
DSCN1391.jpg

I noticed this time the onion was large long slices which made it a little more awkward to eat – kinda like eating spaghetti - but it certainly was tasty! The thick layer of cheese melted over the top is almost a fortress to protect the contents of the soup crock. The beef broth is perfectly rich and flavorful. I just love this stuff!

For entrees, Michael chose the ham and cheese sandwich and I had – what a surprise! The bacon and onion flatbread. Have I ever not ordered this in all 8 of our trips to WDW since 2010 – nope!

Croque Monsieur et sa salade verte: Classic French toasted Ham and Cheese sandwich with a mixed green salad $14.99
DSCN1394.jpg

I was watching Michael closely to see his reaction since I’ve seen mixed reviews for this item. However, if I was looking for a blech reaction that didn’t happen. He also didn’t sing the praises of the sandwich so I am guessing that it was somewhere in between those reactions. He did ask the server for Dijon mustard and it took some interpretation to figure out what he was asking. I thought “Dijon” was French but apparently it must be called something else in French??

Onion and Bacon Flatbread also known as a la flamme Alsacienne: $12.99
DSCN1392.jpg

This flatbread needed some help. It was served rather cold and limp. This is far too delicious to be eaten cold so I made the bold move to ask for a fresh/hot version to replace this. While explaining to our server that this was cold I picked it up and tried to hand it to her so she could see for herself. Apparently she believed me since she didn’t feel the need to handle my food. She quickly swapped it for a fresh one which was perfect! The server said that they would take the flatbread off our bill which was totally unnecessary.

I was fascinated with Beth’s French fry service which came presented with French newspaper. Cute.

DSCN1396.jpg

For dessert Michael chose the strawberry cream cake. I had a bite and it was just ok. I was thinking there would be more flavor to this dessert.

Frasier sur colis de framboise, sorbet fraise: Fresh Strawberry and Cream Cake, Raspberry Sauce and Strawberry Sorbet $8.99

DSCN1404.jpg

Although my flatbread required a re-do for a fresh one, this was still a great meal. Chefs de France visit number 10 is already booked. Using our TiW card we saved $8.19.

We said our good-byes to Philippe – or in my case a big hug. Poor guy, he looks like he’s saying “help me!”

Next Up: Flying Fish dinner

Flying Fish Dinner - Friday May 2, 2014

DSCN1467.jpg

Dinner tonight was at Flying Fish. This was a new restaurant for Michael and me. In all our trips we’d not made it to Flying Fish so I was excited to not only try a new Signature restaurant but to spend the evening with this group of DISers. Dining with us tonight was Barb, Beth, Paula, Hunter, and Michael and moi.

We were seated in the main dining room which was absolutely gorgeous. I’ve heard it is noisy there but I didn’t find it more so than some other restaurants at WDW. The whimsical Boardwalk art and theming was very interesting. Very beautiful.

DSCN1480.jpg

DSCN1479.jpg

We were started with the bread service. The bread was moist and hot – that’s a good sign right? However, after the first bite you knew something was off. It had NO salt so NO flavor. Seriously, this bread sucked. But it’s free so whatever. We mentioned to our server that there was something wrong with the bread and he simply responded that it was the same bread as always. I was thinking if that’s what they always serve, I wondered if anyone in the kitchen ever tasted it? We were brought another basket of bread but it was the same awful stuff.

DSCN1534.jpg

Apparently word leaked out that we were celebrating a few birthdays – specifically Barb, Hunter and me. We received the specially printed versions for the celebrations.

DSCN1485.jpg

DSCN1492.jpg

DSCN1495.jpg

DSCN1496.jpg

The chef had to come to the table to discuss allergies with one of our party and we mentioned the bread situation. The sous chef, Ryan, was amazing and said that he’d send different butter to our table – which he did. He himself delivered 3 trays of Vermont hand churned butter with sea salt. It was amazing stuff. Not enough to make the bread edible but it was superb.

The awesome butter:

DSCN1513.jpg

Not long after we were seated I left the table to attend to some business and when I returned I walked back to my seat and tripped over an umbrella on the floor behind my chair. I was none too graceful as I was twisting my ankle! OUCH!!!! It was the same ankle that I broke last September. That was no fun. The staff quickly got me a bag of ice which was nice.

Doctor Michael tending to my injury!
DSCN1526.jpg

Focusing on the meal and our food choices… Barb had asked if anyone was interested in sharing the Signature Flying Fish Entrée Duo which was the red snapper and New York Strip steak – Yes, as a matter of fact I was. With my choice completed Michael decided to order the crab cake as an appetizer. This is where things got a little sketchy since Barb had placed her appetizer and entrée order but no one else had and the chef hadn’t been out yet. We figured we’d just relax and take out time and not worry about the entrees for now.

Crispy Maine Coast Jonah Crab Cake: Savory Vegetable Slaw, Roasted Red Pepper Coulis, and Ancho Chili Remoulade $17
DSCN1546.jpg

Michael shared this appetizer with me and it was good. I liked the crunchiness and the remoulade – it was a great combination. Not sure it was worth $17 for this single crab cake but oh well.

Barb ordered the cheese plate to share as well. I didn’t note what cheeses are presented but I could make an educated guess as to what manner of accompaniments were served! I had some of the firm white cheese – I think it was a parm of some sort although I’m not sure. But it was delish!

Artisanal Cheeses: 5 Tasting Portions and Accompaniments $18
DSCN1549.jpg
We had some issues early on in our meal that prompted the chef to send the following appetizer to our table. Oh my gosh. Talk about having a secret stash of incredible food in the kitchen – we hit on the mother lode with this. This was amazing!

Melon and Prosciutto – Compliments of the Chef
DSCN1557.jpg

For our entrees, I already had placed my order with the New York Strip half of the duo I was sharing with Barb. Michael ordered the oak-grilled Scottish salmon after consulting with the chef and being assured that this was well prepared and delightful. Since he only eats smoked salmon this was a choice that had him expanding his salmon horizons.

Oak-Grilled Scottish Loch Duart Salmon: Satur Farms Braising Greens, Saffron Scented Sweet Onions, Roasted Young Turnips and Radishes, Greens and Classic Sauce Verde $37
DSCN1565.jpg

Although hesitant to order this, Michael had to agree, this was very good. Even the green sauce was a great addition to the dish.

Char-Crusted New York Strip Steak Part of the Duo $47 with the red snapper
DSCN1569.jpg

DSCN1576.jpg

The steak was cooked to perfection just as I’d ordered and the béarnaise sauce on the side was excellent. It wasn't quite as good as Shula’s in my opinion. I would definitely return just to order this again. I see they have a full entrée of the Char-Crusted Angus New York Strip Steak. The fresh green beans that accompanied the dish were cooked al dente and couldn’t have been a better side dish. The roasted fingerling potatoes were just ok.

Like Barb, I was offered some of Beth’s tuna tartar which was a new experience for me since I don’t eat sushi. I was daring and decided “why not?” and decided that after 50 years it was about time that I ate some raw fish! As hesitant as I was to try this delicacy at first, I ended up not gagging or spitting anything out. It was probably because I tasted the rice more than the tuna which was perfectly fine. I’m not necessarily a sushi convert but I can proudly say that I tried something new! Yay me!

Tuna Tartar
DSCN1568.jpg

My own little taste of tuna tartar!
DSCN1572.jpg

I don’t think we were presented dessert menus. I know Barb was thinking that perhaps Paula, Beth or I had a photo. However, if my memory hasn’t failed completely, I believe the server quoted the dessert menu to us. Michael zoned in on one particular dessert that made me happy… it wasn’t chocolate and it wasn’t mocha. It was the apple pecan blondie tart served with toffee ice cream. Now that sounded like something that I’d like to sample.

Pecan Blondie Tart
DSCN1588.jpg

Cappuccino
DSCN1586.jpg

The tart was rich and delicious and I wish I was hungrier so I could have eaten more than a couple bites. Michael enjoyed it as well.

Despite a few issues I really enjoyed the food and the management team was incredible. If you have Chris as your server you will be well taken care of – he’s incredible.

Epilogue: Dinner was comped for a number of reasons that I may not agree supported an entire meal free for six people - including alcohol. However, when the head guy says everything is free, who are we to argue? Em and I are returning to Flying Fish to eat dinner this week. Hopefully they’ve fixed their bread recipe!

Next Up: Captain’s Grille Breakfast

And with 3 1/2 dining reviews completed in one evening my work is done here for the next couple of weeks.....

I'm inserting a break here while Em and I go to WDW for 15 days starting this week. I have some business travel tomorrow and then I'm out of here!

And you can bet that I will NOT miss out on that ooey gooey toffee cake this trip! :p

Awesome Reviews!

I LOVE Boma! It is a must for me every trip! That's great you got to spend time with your son in Florida.

Whole meal FREE??? wow, crazy but nice!

Have a great trip with Em, safe travels!

This is a seriously big update. :)

The problem with Boma is logistics. I would love to eat breakfast here some morning but getting there takes a lot of time.

Have a great time with Em. I hope you give us a full report on your trip. You always seem to have so much fun together. :)
