Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

I've actually been considering adding Hoop Dee Doo to a future otherwise-non-Disney Orlando trip too. We went several years ago and had a blast! The food was good and plentiful, they had beer and sangria  , my son was called up to join the show, it was all great! It was especially nice since we were staying in the campground on that trip, and we just jumped into our rental golf cart to go to the show and leave afterwards. Otherwise, transportation is a little cumbersome. I would definitely look at the boat options just to make it a little more fun.

So, going back to the chatter about the character meals......definitely (and kind of sadly) I think that many of the Disney characters interact with us differently because we don't have a child in our party. I appreciated that this wasn't the case at the Superstar Character Breakfast, because while we don't have any little kids, we do still enjoy the experience. We are "kids at heart", if you will :p. I can say I was very disappointed in our interaction with Mickey at Ohana's in December (and Ohana's breakfast has long since been a family favourite, so they have to do A LOT to disappoint me). It was my brother's first Disney experience of any kind, and I'll be honest....I was hoping for a little magic for him. Mickey Mouse, the character I was MOST excited for him to meet, was the worst character interaction we've ever had.....he literally seemed to not want to bother with our table at all. For the $30 a person we paid, I expected better. We still enjoyed ourselves, but the disappointment (and perhaps dissatisfaction?) was significant enough for me that I almost considered emailing Disney's guest relations with my feedback. We, too, have certainly had some spectacular interaction with Disney characters over our 10 trips to Orlando, but the best of them were on our first trip in 2009. Again, maybe because Jake was younger and the characters found that easier? It's hard to say.

As for the proposed increase to at least some of the character buffets.....let me be the first to say there's no way in heck I'd pay $60 an adult to dine at Chef Mickey's unless there are huge changes to their menu. While I have no problem paying a premium price for a premium experience (especially when it includes a meal), unless there have been major changes to the food quality since we ate there on our first Disney trip, I couldn't rationalize that jump in cost. I'm sure many others, though, will be still content to pay it: especially as the parks get busier and meeting the characters takes up more time in an already packed park day.

It makes me wonder, though, if we shouldn't try to squeeze in Hoop De Doo Revue sooner rather than later. It's always been on our wish list of things to do in Orlando, and now the price is almost comparable to Chef Mickeys. I worry that the cost for that experience, too, will see a hefty increase as other lower priced options are raised in cost to be similarly valued.
I am so with you. It makes me glad we did Chef Mickeys and Tusker House when the kids were younger. We've gone to both of them several times and they were no longer worth it to me at the old prices. Now that they've doubled it's almost laughable. And 2 credits on the DDP?! Are they insane?!

Like I said, we have some fabulous memories of those meals with our kids and pictures galore. I feel sad for the young families coming up behind us because affording that kind of experience just continues to get more and more cost prohibitive on every level. There are price increases, which one expects, and then there is absolute GOUGING and I'm sad to say I am firmly of the opinion that gouging is the way Disney runs itself now. :(

I think you would enjoy Hoop Dee Doo and the atmosphere of the Fort. We loved our stay there and it was good corny fun. It was one of ds's favourite experiences on any trip and worth doing once. Can't say the same for the luau, but HDDR is worth it one time for sure.

ETA.. It is quite a pain to get in and out of the fort. That's just a fact. So you plan for it and expect it. You could always park at the TTC, grab the ferry from the front of MK back to the Fort, or walk over from Wilderness Lodge if they let you park there. There are options.

Thanks to all for all the sweet and wonderful posts! It was a great day of celebrations.....Jake not only was named to the Dean's List, but he was also the 2016 recipient of the Community & Justice Services Faculty Award.

I will do my best to get back on track with this report tomorrow :goodvibes.

All caught up! Congratulations to Jake, and to you, Gina. What a sweet way to end the program - with a nice award! Carry on with the food pics... though now I am starving and can't imagine where I am going to find a breakfast buffet for lunch around here...

We enjoyed hoop de doo, did it when we had deluxe dining in 2012. Humour was silly and made DD laugh. Included beer which H appreciated. Food was good too. We got the boat from MK there and back as it is not far from the boat dock.

I don't think it was because you didn't have a kid at Ohana...the interaction there has been very rushed for the past few years now. That's our "final day breakfast before the airport" tradition because I like to have something fun for the morning and hey you have to eat right? And it's family style which we like. But I think I am dropping it this year. It's just too crowded and the characters can't give everyone the proper amount of time IMO :(

I'm so glad you guys liked the USF breakfast though!

This is fairly off topic, but I thought of you, Gina.
A family painted their silo as a minion:
http://wane.com/2016/06/08/family-turns-farm-silo-into-giant-minion/

That is SO clever! Almost makes me wish I owned a silo....except that would probably mean I'd have to have a farm, and I'm not a very good country girl .

I don't think we can squeeze it into the October plans at this point, but I'm thinking maybe next spring. I have heard the food is quite pleasing, and its definitely the type of menu that Steve would enjoy!

Thanks for the heads up on Fort Wilderness. I was actually considering using Uber to allow us to enjoy the included alcohol without having to drive. We plan to try Uber for the first time this October (to Discovery Cove and Capones for the same reasons) so wish me luck that our little experiment turns out favourably!

Thanks Melinda! I think he's still glowing a bit today :goodvibes.

What did you end up having for lunch? Inquiring minds want to know!

We love corny humour :teeth:. We either have very good.....or maybe bad? :rotfl:... senses of humour!

Congratulations on Jake's graduation and that is a great photo of the 4 of you.

Thank you! :goodvibes

Well, shoot. I was hoping our experience was an anomaly. Will you give a different character meal a try instead? I have always heard good things about the breakfast at Cape May.....its one I'd also like to give a try someday.

Finally gettin caught up! Congrats to jake!

Thank you, my friend! I hope you are having a spectacular time at Disney!! :thumbsup2

Friday, April 29th: part 2

As we were readying ourselves to leave Café La Bamba, Jake took a quick restroom break to swap out t-shirts to one of his dri-fits that was strategically placed in my purse before we left the villa that morning. He said it was so he would be cooler in the ridiculously high heat, but by cooler did he mean “cooler” (as in temperature” ) or “cooler” as in Minion-free? Hmmmmm :scratchin……..it was a good question .

I will admit, the heat and sun did feel remarkably oven-like as we exited the restaurant, and probably even more so after enjoying the air conditioning for the last hour or more. We decided to attack our small must-do list right off the bat….we were all feeling a little weary by this point in the vacation (a combination of a busy schedule and the high heat) and were fairly certain it would be an early day ::yes::.

The boys both wanted to ride Transformers, which was posted at a 25 minute wait. They hesitated, feeling badly for leaving me for such an extended period of time, but I assured them I could more than fill a half hour while they were otherwise occupied. With their rubber arms sufficiently twisted, they headed into the queue while I pondered my options.

Just as they disappeared from sight, I hear the stains of music from down the street, getting louder and louder with each passing note. Within a few seconds, there was an announcement over the park speakers that Universal was pleased to welcome “The Stars of the Future” (or something along that line) and the first marching band came into view.

I stood and watched them all pass by, each from various high schools in the south, and enjoyed this little impromptu streetmosphere entertainment: those young people were amazing and had so much talent :thumbsup2.

What a fun opportunity this must have been for these high schoolers! But oh, how HOT they must have felt in their beautiful band costumes :crazy2:……in shorts and a t-shirt, I felt like I was melting. They must have been ready to drop once their performance was over :faint:.

I love the vibe of the New York section of the park, so I decided I’d take a stroll through there while the guys were otherwise occupied. While I have never been to New York City personally (it’s on my bucket list for sure, but Orlando keeps getting in the way) this area sure seems to come close to the photos and movies I’ve seen which do feature the “real thing”.

It was SO quiet …. I felt like I had the whole place all to myself :cloud9:.

I popped into the Christmas store and perused all the wonderful items they had for sale. There were some Minion tree lights that literally called my name once again, and it took all my effort to walk away without a big bag of purchases .

After walking through New York, I continued down toward Despicable Me, and while I had no desire to ride the ride right now (my stomach was still SO full from breakfast), I popped into the store to browse their delightful inventory. Much to my delight, I found not one but TWO Minions waiting to greet guests and literally not a soul around them…..by sheer good luck, I managed to hit that perfect time when the gift shop was nearly deserted and the ride had not yet emptied out into the dance party area. So, I got myself a little extra Minion-lovin’…..with our AP’s ready to expire, I had to soak up what I could while I still had the chance .

Heading back to our meeting spot outside Transformers, I once again had spectacular timing as one of the mini-parades was just emerging from the backstage area. Seconds later, both my guys saddled up behind me (smiling ear to ear and full of happy chatter about the Transformers ride), so the three of us all watched the entertainment while they filled me in on their ride experience and I filled them in about my Minion encounter.

From there, we headed to ET for one final ride…..both my men knew this was one of the few must-do’s on my list aside from our character breakfast. After ET, we made our way to Springfield for a final spin on the Twirl & Hurl.

Steve also had one more must-do on his Simpsons bucket list, and that was to win yours truly a Maggie for our Simpsons stuffie collection. In addition to the Radioactive Man that he had won on the Sledgehomer game earlier in the trip, we had an impressive collection of Simpsons stuffies won on previous trips proudly displayed at home: with a Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, Santa’s Little Helper and Krusty, the only Simpson unaccounted for was Maggie. Today, he declared, he would complete my collection if it took us all day to do so.

There was only one game that offered Maggie as a prize, and it was the one where you had to bust the balloons by throwing small darts. The sweat was STREAMING down poor Steve’s back as he paid his money to the attendant (perhaps a navy cotton shirt was not the best idea after all!), but he was focused enough that I don’t think he noticed. While darts aren’t exactly his game of choice (and aren’t something he gets an opportunity to play very often), every dart he threw managed to burst a balloon, and he was awarded a Maggie with great fanfare and excitement from the game staff :cheer2:.

As we were taking the requisite photos of his latest accomplishment, we saw a couple characters stroll out from backstage and set up next to the entrance to the Simpsons ride. Before setting off in a quest for a cold beverage (which my talented Steve had most definitely earned!), we stopped for photos with Krusty and Sideshow Bob……with absolutely no wait at all.

More to come :).

Lots done that morning. Marching bands sound better than transformers to me too, I've been on transformers twice and don't get the appeal. Still never been in that christmas shop and we did spend time walking in New York. We caught an acapella group there this time i'd not seen before.

I just had a flashback while you were talking about the heat and that section of USF. For some reason it feels SO hot over there. It was the only time I was ever brought practically to tears by the Orlando heat, like I didn't know how I was going to walk out of the park lol. A QS pizza place right there saved the day :)

Besides the heat, I agree the New York area is so neat.

Love that you met more Minions on your free time!

More minions!! How fun that you keep seeing these guys!

I lost count of number of times my son and I did Transformer, Spider-man and Men in Black-He could have very happily just done those 3 attractions all day, although he did enjoy spell casting in Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade.

You sure did get your money's worth out of your Photoconnect card and really love your photos!! I know you also got a terrific deal when you got yours. We got it last trip thinking it would be like Memory maker. Except for the HP rides and the discount with Shutterbuttons (now that was a cool experience!!)we didn't feel like it was worth the money and we won't likely get it again-unless price drops substantially. This is one area that I think Disney really did do a much better job-the auto load of photos to the magic bands, plus they give you stock photos of some rides, and the video of Tower of Terror is really neat. Fighting a crowd to get pic added was not fun. And we often rode separately due to son not wanting to do some scarier rides and we would forget to hand off the card. I also didn't like that (non season pass) you had to use the card on consecutive days vs the full 14 days of Disney.

And congrats to Jake on the award. From the descriptions you have given of him he sounds very deserving!

Oy, Gina, you have so many followers and commenters here! I don't really have the chance to check this regularly, but every time I do, I'm like 5 pages behind!

I have always felt the same about Disney character dining experiences. Me and my ex have done a couple, and it often felt like they'd just skip over us or didn't know what to do since we were two "adults". But I don't know if I could foot the bill for the Universal one; as I think the Gru and the Minions would be the only ones that would interest me (I have NO CLUE who those bunnies are; even though that bunny does sound sweet for trying to comfort that mom!).

We are Ft Wilderness fans as well, but we do Trail's End buffet. I've heard it's the same kitchen as hoop-de-doo, but there's no show, so it's around $27 for dinner per adult. They have a breakfast buffet every day and a brunch on the weekends that goes until 2pm.

For those who care, their iced tea is actually brewed (yum!) and they have soft serve, cobbler, corn bread with amazing honey butter, a carving station, soups, inventive salad options, peel-n-eat shrimp...oh my.

You had amazing luck with the meet and greets this trip!

Also we went to NYC recently, and I think Orlando is way better so you're not missing much. :D

Congrats to Jake on his graduation!

I think you would love HDDR. It's my favorite dinner show (I went 9 times last year)

:crazy2:

My son told me today that Canadians have more donut shops per capita than any country in the world. I was kinda surprised, and then I instantly thought.. I wonder if dancin' knows this fun fact?
I live in the Tim Horton's capital of Canada. There is one ever 11.5 ft. So I have no doubt that your son is correct.

I do recall reading something to that effect a few years ago. Fried dough is a very Canadian thing.
