Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

Friday, April 29th: Superstar Character Breakfast, continued

When it was time to swap out Gru, Kevin, EB and Fluffy for the next set of characters, the host had everyone wave goodbye to them and readied the crowd to welcome the next round of special guests: Dora, Diego, Spongebob Squarepants and Squidward Tentacles . Many were sad to see the minion take a break, but she assured everyone that they would return in about 10 minutes for more breakfast fun. During the brief lull between groups of characters, Steve and Jake both took the opportunity to dash up and refill their plates once again. The buffet line was never busy and they were able to go through quickly each time.

Dora was the first of group 2 to visit our table. Now, our trio is pretty far beyond the Dora the Explorer TV show stage, but she was cute and sweet nonetheless. She’s not the reason we would book this breakfast but it was still fun to meet her, and I’m sure small kids would be overjoyed that she was in attendance.

Apparently even Dora the Explorer is taller than me. Sheesh!! :rolleyes2

Diego, not surprisingly, was the next character to drop by. The only one missing was Boots!

Spongebob Squarepants was much more of a hit with Jake, as he often watched that Nickleodeon show with the residents at the group home he worked at. He didn’t need any coaxing to join in for photos with this guy:

Spongebob was actually a lot of fun. Every once in a while, the music would pick up to something really catchy and he’s just start dancing in the middle of the restaurant. The host would excitedly announce that it was a “dance break!” and all the kids got up and danced right along with him :dancer:. It was fun to watch and the kids had a ball.

Our server returned with fresh refills of milk during one of these little sessions, and happily chimed in with a delighted “Yay! It’s a Dance Break! I love those!” as she deposited our full glasses on the table and cleared the others away with a grin. She, too, danced her way back to the kitchen to the beat of the music and left us smiling at her enthusiasm.

Squidward Tentacles was our last character of the morning, and the boys quite enjoyed this opportunity to meet him :). Steve was happy to strike a serious pose with the equally serious Squidward :smooth::

Of course, you know how this is going to go…..like father, like son :

I tried to make him smile, but alas….it didn’t work. Unless, of course, he was smiling on the INSIDE…yeah, that’s it ;).

After the last character had left, our server dropped by to encourage us to relax and enjoy as much more from the buffet as we wanted or more time with the characters as they milled about. She assured us there was no rush to leave and to take as much time as we wanted. We did sit for a while longer to let our breakfast settle a bit before heading out to enjoy the rest of the park, and while we lounged I squeezed in one last opportunity for a hug from Kevin…...because you can’t get enough minion love :

I can’t say enough positive things about this meal…..we loved everything about it from the food to the character interaction to the atmosphere :worship:. Even as three adults with no kids, it was a highlight of our vacation: and that’s saying something, because we did a ton of awesome stuff over the course of our 10 day trip. All in all, we couldn’t have picked a more amazing way to kick off our final day of fun at Universal…..and we would absolutely, positively recommend it for anyone seeking a character dining experience as part of their Universal vacation.

Note…..I do see that the price has increased substantially since we were there in April. Our tickets were $25.99 each, while current pricing on the Universal website is $34.99. That’s a really steep increase. At $25.99, it was a great value…..at the new higher cost…..well…..that seems like a LOT.

Love the pics from the Superstar Character Breakfast! It sounds like a great meal and great character experience! :goodvibes

I love your story about the Fluffy character and the little boy and his mom. That is so sweet! :dogdance:

The food at Chili's looks delicious, and I am seriously craving Krispy Kreme donuts right now! :cloud9:

I'm sorry to hear about Jen the server. I'm glad that your server at Chili's was much better! :thumbsup2

I'm finally caught up! We went on a "Calvin and Hobbes" vacation and just got back. Toured Cedar Point and then all around where Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes creator) lived and had his original artwork. Anyway, glad to catch up! Your breakfast post reminded me of a couple of things. My son used to LOVE Dora and Diego when he was small. Then, I took him to Universal, he saw them there, and then for some reason, no more watching the shows. LOL. Not sure why. Also, he LOVES Hop. We watch it ALL the time. He's 9 now, so not quite as much, but a couple of years ago, I got to meet James Marsden, who is in the movie. I told him how much my son loved it and watched it over and over and he said, "I'm SO SORRY!" Hahaha. It really is a cute movie though. Mr. Marsden was nice enough to make a little video saying hi to my son. It was quite sweet. So, anyway, you should watch it on Easter. :) This is so making me excited for next year's Universal vacation!! YAY!!!

I always liked Spongebob when I was younger, it looks like he was a lot of fun. My favorite was always Patrick, and I've heard he meets in the store so I think I'll try to find him next time.

I will do a review of the Grinch breakfast in the TR after I go! The most frustrating thing about choosing it was the lack of reviews (if any they were older).

.
And speaking of testing. Who the he!! paid someone to research today's tidbit? And why?
It was the good folks at the Vistana.

Speaking of smokin' holes in the ground, someone may have tried this in Ottawa today...

This is just a couple of blocks from Parliament Hill...
WOW! I know exactly where that is. I know Toronto has had a few minor ones in the last couple of years. They blame the ancient infrastructure.

Gina, we've had have incredible character interaction at Disney restaurants on many occasions. However, it was when Grumpy Cat was little. We've had characters sit down at the table with us, take our camera and take pics. I have a pic of DD#1 and I that was taken by either Chip or Dale(not sure which one). Goofy has restyled GC's hair. Numerous crazy things that Stitch has done. Once he took tea bags out of the box on our table and filled his ears with them. The absolute best was a couple of years ago GC and I went on vacay with my friend and her son who was only 5(let's call him Jr.) at the time. My friends son was very clearly nervous of the characters and when Stitch came around he tried to engage Jr. who was having no part of it. Stitch pushed Jr. out of his seat at the table and then sat in it and proceeded to load up a plate of food. Jr. started to laugh so Stitch then tried to feed him from the plate. Again Jr. was having no part of it. Stitch then started flinging scrambled eggs over his shoulder and put bacon in his ears. Stitch was at our table for 15-20 minutes. When he finally left he picked up the bread basket off our table and took it with him. I think the server was a little less than impressed but we enjoyed it and I was thrilled that my friend and her son had such a great first experience.

I think that when you are a table of adults they just kind of breeze through for a hello and picture. I know that's all we would want now. In fact there are couple of restaurants that we really like the food but won't go any more because it feels kind of weird to character dine when you're not overly interested in the character meets. Also, it's just way too expensive. Disney just announced a price bump on a couple of character meals, making dinner $59.99/adult. Not at all worth it, IMO.

Yay! I'm so glad you guys loved the breakfast!

Actually even that new price isn't bad, with that rumor that all of the Disney buffets are going up to $60 per person :crazy2:

We met patrick in the store last week. He was so much fun, enthusiastically hugging me and dd.

It's been confirmed that only 3 dinner buffets are going up. CM's, Akershaus and TH. They are also going up to 2 DDP credits.

I heard that but then I listened to the Dis podcast today and Pete said he had it from a very reliable source that they are all going up by 50% or so in October. He said buffets, not sure if it was just the character meals or all buffets. Not sure which is true but sounds like some of them anyway are headed for big hikes :(

LOL....my info came from Pete as well. Yesterday.

I"m glad you enjoyed your breakfast! We have a love/hate relationship with the chocolate milk at restaurants. Duncan prefers the premixed milk but will drink the syrup kind if it is in the correct chocolate to milk ratio. He can tell if it's off and won't drink it. We've wasted a lot of milk in the last 2 years.

Our trip is Sept 4-15. We will spend most of our time at US and Sea World but are hopefully going to AK for the DVC special event on evening. We might hit up either Gatorland, the Clearwater Aquarium (with Winter the dolphin) or Kennedy Space Center.

Yikes!! We payed that last year for Galactic Breakfast during Star Wars Weekends-was a ton of fun and the character interactions were great-My son had his light saber on the table and the storm troopers kept coming over and trying to put it away for him and giving him the "eye". Greedo tried to get my middle to work for him...just a lot of fun but not something we would likely repeat soon at that price. We had a really great princess dinner at 1900 Park Fare in 2004 when we took the girls for the first time. All the characters came by several times (including Cinderella) and Prince Charming was wonderful. We haven't done other character dinners although we did the Disney Visa meet n greet in Epcot last year-got Mickey and Goofy who were a ton of fun together. I had my Disney college program alumni shirt on and Goofy kept trying to get me to stay with him. He is my son's favorite character (which my normally shy son told him) so he literally goofed around with him. We had a similar experience 2 years ago with Elsa and Anna-unhurried, fun etc. We don't do a ton of character stuff but the Star Wars weekend interactions had to be the most fun.

Great recap of the breakfast! We'll have to see if it's something we want to add. I think it will be a week we're there decision.

I do have one question though. Why does Hop get clothes and all Fluffy gets is a beret? Seems a bit off. I know that brings up a lot of other questions if you look at Disney, but I haven't seen Hop so I don't know if there's a reason.

It's awesome when you have a good time and feel like got a good value :) I hope they are either going to improve the food and/or the character interactions for that "improved" price

Hey all, just checking in before our busy day kicks off to let you know that there won't be any updates posted until probably tomorrow. Jake graduates college this afternoon so its a day of celebrations party:.

I can hardly believe we've gone from this (1999).....

....to this (2010, grade 8):

....to this (2014, grade 12):

....to this (2016, Loyalist College) so quickly.

Time passes way too quickly ::yes::.

Congratulations to Jake and you and Steve!!!
Wow time goes fast-My oldest just registered for classes at her college yesterday-class of 2020.

Enjoy your day:)

So glad to hear such awesome feedback on Maggiano's!! It doesn't get much mention here on the boards, so I often wonder if its a secret gem?
How do you find it compares to Olive Garden or Carrabba's? (assuming you have been to one or both)

We have been to all three...and are fans of all 3 for various reasons...and my husband is ITALIAN so that's saying something. Nothing compares to those evil breadsticks and salad from Olive Garden, but I'm not always impressed with their food...however I'm not a big pasta fan. I do like OG's Mushroom Ravioli though...but many of their chicken or seafood dishes have not impressed me.

LOVE Carrabbas...enjoy many of their chicken dishes and their caesar salads are wonderful...always fresh and tasty. I also love their calamari and some of their shrimp dishes. They tend to have good steaks as well.

So to Maggianos...I think their prices are VERY reasonable...closer to OG than Carrabbas maybe...and they have these pasta specials where you buy one to eat and one to take home, a promotion OG runs sometimes but it's a regular thing at Maggianos. For my kids who love pasta...and my husband...this is great. They have some wonderful flatbreads as well. I think I had some kind of chicken dish last time there...probably since that's my go-to thing and I did enjoy it. My youngest son loves pasta with shrimp and I think the one at Maggianos beat the one at Olive Garden for sure. Now this is the Maggianos near my house and I can't speak for ones elsewhere.

Anyway...LOVE your report on the character breakfast! Really makes me think maybe we should book that one just for something different. We have one or two booked at some of the Universal Hotels...but I'm not sure which ones we will attend.

Nice write up about the breakfast. We did it too, and we enjoyed it. But with the big price increase, it will be a pass this time.

Went to Chili's last night. There's one 5 minutes from us. All agreed, apps and dessert are what we would order again. Our entrees were nothing to write home about, and our waiter, while decent, took almost 20 minutes to correct an error on our bill. We won't be back for some time.

Congratulations to Jake! Time does fly. Older one is going to college in the fall. Little boy no more either. Have to wait to 2023 before the younger one is done college. Three more years of high school for her first.
