Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

Does that mean we will get a new random, useless piece of information from you EVERY day? (I, for one, would enjoy that daily post here......because nerd that I am, I thrive on that stuff! ::yes::)
Perhaps I could accommodate. My head is filled with completely useless stuff.

Today's installment......
NASA had to rename the sizes on the apparatus that they use to collect urine for male astronauts from small, medium and large to large, gigantic and humongous. No one was willing to admit their true size. :confused3

We also enjoy the ambiance of the Grand Floridian but have no desire to stay. One of my favorite hints is the live music in the evenings. A pianist downstairs alternates with a jazz ensemble upstairs in the lobby.

Walking from the grand florian to the Polynesian (or vice versa) is a great way to see the wedding pavilion.

Christmas is a great time of year to visit all the monorail resorts :) The tree in the Grand Floridian lobby is amazing.

Found out this morning a Steak n Shake opened in downtown Seattle. So it's a bit different from the one's we are all used to but I will have to make my way there sometime this summer. This one serves local beer and what I read the menu might be smaller or different. Weird to have it out here and wish it was closer, I got spoiled having two within 10 minutes of my house in NC, but happier to be back living at home. If we could just get some Tim Horton's to open too I'd almost be set. Waiting for Firehouse Subs to get closer than 2 hours away and hoping someday Zaxby's will move west. Oh and In n Out north :)

Yay for a brand new Steak & Shake in town! Lucky you! :woohoo: Firehouse Subs has long been on our list of to-try's on our Orlando vacations.....they are not far from the Vistana, in the Crossroads. Trying to decide if we should try Publix or Firehouse for subs after one of our DC days in October. Both get great reviews.

Steve and I picked out a PERFECT spot for a Tim Hortons on International Drive: and I'm not kidding. It was SCREAMING out our names. I wish we had the capital to build on that empty lot....with all the Canadians who vacation there and the many Americans from the northern states, I swear it would be a resounding success!

Thank you so much!!! This restaurant was on our list for October already and we are really looking forward to it. I bought the $80 voucher and also used the discount code. So $29 USD for $80. That should just about cover the four of us before tax and tip. Our voucher expires October 31st. We fly in the morning of the 29th so we will use it our first or second night. I am so excited! Thank you again!

Gina, we all love Jurassic Park and have seen all the movies many times. I think DS12 will especially love meeting the Raptor :)

I bought my voucher this morning, too. There shall be a Hash House breakfast for us sometime in October . Thank you @Princess Leia :thumbsup2.

From predictions I've seen, the dollar is looking bad until late 2017, uggh. I'll just have to work on my trip report, keep saving my pennies and live vicariously through you! The raptor encounter looks like so much fun! Not sure if I missed it during my last Universal trip (May 2015) or if it wasn't open then.

Wow, it's a small world! I'm in Glen Abbey. :wave2:

The Raptor encounter wasn't open on our early May trip last spring, though I think it wasn't long thereafter. Sounds like we both just missed it by a hair during our travels that month!

I am hoping that our dollar will creep back to a less painful position faster than the "experts" predict. It sure would be nice to even see it rebound so somewhere around the 85 cent mark.

Perhaps I could accommodate. My head is filled with completely useless stuff.

I suppose I should have seen that coming, shouldn't I?

You definitely make sure that things are never dull here :p.

Christmas is a great time of year to visit all the monorail resorts :) The tree in the Grand Floridian lobby is amazing.

Despite being in Orlando for Christmas twice now (2012 and 2015), we have never made it to the monorail resorts (except for the Polynesian for breakfast) to check out the holiday decor. I may have to keep an eye to Christmas 2017 and see if I can arrange to have that scratched off our Florida bucket list!

Thursday, April 28th: continued

After our awesome Raptor Encounter was over, I encouraged the guys to hit up Jurassic Park River Adventure one more time before we headed out of the area. Lines were still short (10 minutes) so it was crazy for them not to enjoy a second tour on a family favourite. I headed to the ladies room to try and tame my hair which was growing frizzier by the second in the heat and humidity (for the record, my efforts were useless .... oh well!) and we met up afterward at the ride exit.

Everyone was HOT and thirsty at this point, so we strolled over to Hogsmeade for a couple of Butterbeers to share. Butterbeer is ALWAYS a favourite of ours, but for some reason, it tastes even better when the temperatures rise to 90 degrees :sunny:.

:drinking1Ahhhhhhh!

We strolled around for a bit, poking in some of the shops and checking out the storefronts. They guys weren’t interested in a ride on Forbidden Journey right then.....especially after gulping down some Butterbeer in particularly rapid form....and this area, as always, was plagued with crowds anyway. Lines were lengthier than they would have liked, and we’d been spoiled this week with walk-ons and no waits.

It was busy enough in Hosgmeade that I didn’t even bother to keep my camera out. With all those bodies looking up, down and everywhere but where they are going, I figured it was safer to keep it tucked away in the case :crowded:. Better for the camera, for sure, but I guess (in hindsight) not so good for the trip report :headache:.

We decided a lunch break might be in order. Heading back across the bridge, we stopped for a family picture in front of the castle:

We laughed a bit at our ability to get a completely clear picture on the bridge when Hogsmeade was so packed. Timing, as they say, is everything! :thumbsup2

We had decided to eat our mid-day meal at Confisco’s in Port of Entry (Steve and I had enjoyed two awesome meals here on our couples-only trips, and we wanted Jake to experience first-hand what all of our gushing had been about) so we had a full half of the park to walk through on our way back. Good thing we had enjoyed some Butterbeer refreshments in the Wizarding World before the lengthy trek! ::yes:: As we passed through Toon Lagoon and headed toward Marvel, I asked Steve if he was interested in giving the sledge hammer game a try and of course, he perked up noticeably. Fresh off a Butterbeer high, this was usually his prime time for strength.

But alas, when we arrived, the game was having “technical difficulties” and its inner mechanics were open while they awaited a maintenance and repair crew :(. It would be lunch first and muscles later.

Confisco’s was nearly empty as we approached the podium so we were able to be seated immediately and without reservations. Our server approached us within just a few minutes and handed us menus while she offered to take our beverage orders. Having just enjoyed some super-sweet Butterbeers, all of us opted for glasses of water......and I think this is where the trouble began :rolleyes2.

Have you ever noticed when a server does an immediate about-face in demeanor? From friendly and accommodating to annoyed that you’re breathing her air? That’s exactly what happened here.....and unfortunately for us, it carried on throughout the remainder of our meal :sad2:.

The first two times we had visited, our server had rhymed off several different daily specials that were in addition to the standard menu items (the menu, I will note, had changed since our October visit.....and a couple of our favourites were no longer listed as options). I inquired as to what the specials of the day might be, and was flatly told “We don’t have daily specials. Read the menu”.

Ouch :guilty:. Okay.

She pressed us to please choose our entrees (I guess she was in a hurry to serve all the other empty tables?) and left once we gave her our selections. We were marvelling at her obvious irritation when the table next to us was greeted by their server (who seemed quite delightful in comparison to our “Jen”), who promptly rhymed off a selection of daily specials that weren’t on the menu.

Really? :confused3

At any rate, we’re not the type of people to fight about the trivial stuff or make any kind of scene. We could have taken her to task on it when she returned virtually wordlessly with our food, but honestly...it would have made little difference I would guess. We’re always a little leery about knowingly stirring up trouble with a server.....just in case any of the spit-in-my-soup stories have any sort of validity to them :rolleyes1.

Speaking of soup, Steve opted to start with the hearty potato leek soup as an appetizer. We had enjoyed it on previous trips and today was no exception. Very yummy as always, and it’s nice to be able to get a choice of portion sizes (cup or bowl....his choice was the smaller cup).

Neither Jake nor I were terribly starving, so we went with the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. While it normally comes with mozzarella, bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickle, I chose to have it with bacon only, and Jake order it minus the pickle and tomato. Jake added mayo to his while I opted for the sandwich in its unadorned purity.

Steve tummy was a lot more rumble-y, so he opted for the chicken and beef fajitas. Sadly, our server’s mood hadn’t improved by this point and she literally dropped our meals on the table before strutting off toward the open kitchen.

Aside from when she brought us the bill (and we had to hail another server to ask her to do that when the time came), we never saw Jen again :sad2:. Our waters were never refilled, and she never once stopped back to see if the meal was okay or if we needed anything else. It was unfortunate, too, because Steve had an issue with his bowl of house-made guacamole: it was the pits. Literally ::yes::. We eventually were able to hail one of the cooks from the kitchen (who kindly came over after we waved to him from our seats.....only to ask, why is your server not helping you? To which we replied “we would like to know the same thing!”). It turns out that Steve’s bowl of fresh guac inadvertently (or perhaps by Jen’s design?) contained nothing more than the hard avocado pit amidst a small coating of the guacamole. The chef apologized very sincerely and brought him over two fresh dishes within seconds. All the while, our server was still MIA.

Thankfully, despite the dreadful service, the food itself (aside from the first bowl of guacamole) was great, and we generally enjoy the atmosphere here. It was wonderful to escape the heat for a while and rest our feet while in air-conditioned comfort while we dined, but I have to say.....Jen truly spoiled what we had hoped would be a nice experience for Jake in particular. We laughed it off......really, what else can you do? (other than speak to a manager, and we really didn’t want to take it to that level).....but I will freely admit it took all my inner decency to leave any kind of a tip for easily the worst service we’d ever had on 10 trips to Orlando. We tend to tip very generously on our vacations, but I could not bear to impart anything more than a very basic symbol of courtesy for such woeful behaviour on her part.

After having to summon another waitress to beckon Jen for the bill once we had finished our lunch, we even got an eye roll as we handed her our Premier AP so she could apply the passmember discount to the total cost (which was $37.99 including tax.....our AP saved us $6.29).

Ah, well. Everything can be made better with dessert, right? :goodvibes

Such a sour experience at Confisco called for something to sweeten the mood, so we headed next door to another favourite place that we wanted to introduce Jake to:

Having breakfasted lightly at the villa before our day at the park, we had deliberately saved room for treats at Croissant Moon. Steve had been craving a slice of their infamous cheesecake since we had passed through the gates, while I was eager awaiting the first bite of their ah-mazing Napolean bars . Jake perused the long glass cases in an effort to select just the right snack......and after much consideration, he had finally decided:

He picked a cookie. A cookie?!? :confused3 All those sensuous and tempting delicacies, and he turns them all done for a plain old run-of-the-mill chocolate chip cookie. Where on earth did I, as his mother, go wrong?

All three items were “free” with our quick service dining cards from the day prior. We hadn’t used our dessert entitlements so this is where we chose to redeem them. If I remember correctly, we purchased a bottle of milk to share (such richness needed something cool and smooth to wash it all down) and we were nearly waddling as we headed back out into Port of Entry.

Oh. My. Word. We were soooooooo full :faint:.

Such overburdened stomachs meant that we wouldn’t be riding anything wild and crazy for at least the next while. I knew the guys both wanted to try and meet up with some of the Super Heroes during the scheduled meet-and-greets in the Marvel area, so we slowly made our way in that direction. We happened upon these folks just before the bridge to Hulk:

I am not sure who they are (anyone out there know?) but they were engagingly greeting guests and encouraging photos. They made lots of jokes to Steve about him being “short”, which was kind of refreshing.....now he knows how I feel on a virtually daily basis!

More to come :coffee:.

Well that's a shame about the service. We have only experienced it once and then the server had the cheek to automatically add gratuity when there were only 2 of us! We asked for it to be removed much to his disappointment.

The desserts look yummy:)

A Timmy's in Orlando would be worth the uber ride :) I've never understood why we are so close but don't have any in WA state. We don't have any donut chains, though there are a few krispy kremes and I know you all love them but blah not real donuts. There's very few independent donut places any more either, just the grocery store. Maybe this is why we don't have Tim's or even dunkin.

I have only had a meatball at firehouse, it's one of the few sandwiches that aren't steamed. It's far better than subway or quizno's meatball. My mom likes whatever it is she gets and it's steamed but I know a couple of people that think they have soggy sandwiches. I've had a sub from publix but my idea of one is turkey, mayo and cheddar, so while it was good and I think they use boar's head meats which is one of the better deli meat brands, I'm probably not the best judge of there.

Wonder who pee'd in Jen's cornflakes?
Like you, I rarely think something is worth a scene and prefer to let those types of people suffer the dreadful consequences of having to be themselves. I have to admit though, I will only be pushed so far and I probably would have been tempted to give a little attitude back. The restaurant itself looks good and I'm looking forward to giving it a try. Hopefully Jen will be off that day.

Oh wow....thank you SO MUCH for sharing that! We have been given a gift card to Hash House for our October trip, so we already had a dinner planned for one of our days.....but perhaps now we will also add on a breakfast as well. That half price offer makes it a spectacular value, and we adore the Hash House cuisine. You rock!

I bought my voucher this morning, too. There shall be a Hash House breakfast for us sometime in October . Thank you @Princess Leia :thumbsup2

That's fantastic - I'm glad I posted! I'm just after paying an unexpected hefty car repair bill so any good deals are very welcome! I booked my first day of fast Passes today. I actually don't have a plan for this holiday other than I've got tickets for Disney including water parks, Aquatica, Seaworld and Busch Gardens. It's feeling very strange as I would normally have all my ADRS booked and know where I was dining every night. I'll get the hang of this offsite planning.

It's a slow day here. So I started a list and did a little research. I've got about a 3 week supply. :stir:

Well, this should be fun then :teeth:. I can't wait to see what tomorrow's is! Three weeks should hopefully get us through right to the end of this report, give or take a day.

Well that's a shame about the service. We have only experienced it once and then the server had the cheek to automatically add gratuity when there were only 2 of us! We asked for it to be removed much to his disappointment.

Croissant Moon has the most delectable sweets :cloud9:. Definitely a must-do when you find yourself at IOA ::yes::.

You don't like Krispy Kreme?! :scared1: Say it isn't so!

I guess the fact that you're a Tim Hortons lover redeems you, though ;). Hey, maybe we Disers should pool our resources and open the franchise together! Can you imagine working with @dancin Disney style ? :rotfl: There would never be a dull day at the office ever again.

Wonder who pee'd in Jen's cornflakes?

It's a great restaurant (normally) and we've had two other fantastic experiences there. Definitely go.....with a different server, it makes all the difference. If you see Jen strutting around, just be sure to ask for a different table LOL ;).

Well boo, sorry to hear about your car :(. Auto repairs are no fun at all.

It's a strange feeling to give up the super-planning that's required for a Disney trip, but it certainly can be very freeing. I look forward to hearing your review of BG....its on our radar for our 2017 vacation (whenever that happens to be...maybe April or May next year).

I don't and I've had them fresh off the belt too. I think it's a combination of there not being much to the donut, it's mostly air, and the glazeI don't like it. Glaze shouldn't come off in huge chunks once dry. It's just a bunch of air and not good tasting sugar to me. It's not that I'm a cake donut fan, I like a good regular glazed donut or a cinnamon twist. A co-worker brought donuts in a few weeks ago, they looked so good, nice and fluffy with lots of glaze and then I took a bite and tasted the oil they had cooked them in. So disappointing. The whole thing didn't taste oily, just the edges, so I did enjoy some of it. I'll just take a box of honey glaze tim bits :)

Now I really want a donut. I may need to find an excuse to go to Vancouver this summer :) We did the aquarium 2 years ago but our shopping trip to the Roots outlet and the mall I like in Surrey were both a bust. The late lunch at Boston Pizza and the donut at Tim's made it worth it though, mmm Boston Pizza.

You are bringing back some great memories! I loved Jurassic Park River Adventure.

In case anyone is interested they are doing the Hash House a Go Go offer at the moment on Travelzoo. So that's $20 for $40 food and drink or $39 for $80 food and drink. I also applied a new member discount that gave me $10 off so I paid $10 for $40 of food. Alan did the same. Gina you've taught us all well - our exchange rate is awful too at the moment!

I've never used trazelzoo- can you share the new member code?

You are better than me, no way could I keep my mouth shut on the Jen issue. I am a huge believer in tipping based on service, and I love the look on the manager's face when I call them over to tell them how GREAT our server was, I guess they don't get that enough.

I am on vacation and you are a server in a theme park. It is your job to enhance my experience. Tough, but true. And if you are good, I will happily tip you between $20 - $50 for your service. My thoughts - if you have 2-3 tables for that hour, you can make upwards of $50-$75 that hour - that is good money and should be earned.

Heck, Steak n Shake Kenny probably fails more than he succeeds, but at least he is trying. To this day, the best service I have ever received was at Cinderella's castle and I wasn't allowed to tip him, I tried really hard and this guy would not take a penny. He understood where he worked and what his job was and would not break out of character - how dare he take anything from someone that he serves! The guy was awesome! Jen Stinks!

I have to say that we absolutely love Confisco, that will be our first meal when we arrive there this Saturday, but I have never stepped into Croissant Moon! :sad2: Needless to say, that ends on Saturday!:flower:

That Raptor encounter looks like so much fun - I will definitely be checking it out when I'm there NEXT WEEK

Even though Jen was sour, I'm so glad the food was tasty. I'm thinking Croissant Moon will have to be a little pit stop for us too - I've heard great things about their muffins.

I'm still debating about us bringing bags at IOA and US. I wish we had a Gina on our trip to watch our stuff while we go on rides :rotfl: Those boys must know how lucky they are :thumbsup2

LOL, oddly enough, I am no fan of Boston Pizza!! :rotfl2: It appears we have totally different tastes. Of course, I've never been known for my refined palate :rolleyes1 .... so perhaps that accounts for many of our differences!

You would have to show up for work looking better than that, missy ;).

Lucky you.....you're in the final countdown! :woohoo: Sounds like you may have timed things just perfectly: hopefully the tropical depression will have long since rolled through and the sun will be shining once again.

My boys are always VERY grateful for my willingness to hold their stuff while they enjoy the wilder rides. That's why they are always happy to accommodate my must-do's during our trip.....like these moments:

I don't know how I missed posting that picture from our Tuesday at Universal Studios, but we danced with Bob and Vector after Despicable Me! And those guys of mine joined in with enthusiasm.......just another reason why I love them so .

You are a better lady than me. I DEFINITELY would have been speaking to a manager. It's one thing to have a bad attitude. I understand people have bad days, but to barely even get basic service would have really aggravated me.

I must admit, I hate confrontation :o. I also couldn't help but think....maybe she had a sick child at home. Or her husband had just left her. Or the engine of her car blew on the way to work. Of course, that's no excuse for what certainly seemed more like indifference and rudeness and less like carrying a heavy burden on her heart, but still......I couldn't bear to bring bad karma on myself by putting a fine point on the issue. I like to think that these type of things catch up with people in the end. Once I get through this trip report, I will happily post a truthful review on TripAdvisor and let things work themselves out from there :).
