I told everyone that I decided to teach for a few reasons

  • Snow days
  • Holidays
  • Christmas and Easter Break
  • Summers off
  • and last but no least the enormous salaries
:rotfl:

Yep, sounds like why my dad, DS and sister are/were all teachers.

DS got his first job and loves it. He teaches 6th grade. He spent the whole weekend doing grades and report cards. The people who think teaching is only a few hours a day and that's it are way off. Not sure about my sister but I know my DS and father would never have traded it though, not even for a high paying job. I am so happy that he found something that he truly loves and doesn't have to dread going to work every day.

You teach?

What subject(s)?
What age(s)?
What is a good salary?

As a teachers assistant I get the same perks, but NOT the enormous salary :(

I teach too...but I teach in a childcare center...I don't get snow days, summers off or Winter or Spring break. But I do get snack twice a day and that's good for something. :sunny:

I teach in a preschool. I get summers, holiday breaks, and snow days. I also get the added bonus if attending A LOT of birthday parties. Oh, yeah and the huge salary!;)

Just curious...

How bad of a salary are we talking? Here in DFW, a teacher can make close to 40k starting salary with only a B.A. I don't think that is *THAT* bad for fresh out of college.

Maybe it is, and I'm in denial.

37K to start, teachers in it for about 10 years up to 47 to 50K -- our family couldn't survive on that.

I just finished writing my autobiographical sketch for my intern semester and I included some of those perks ;) I live about 2 hr north of DFW area and we get paid around $35,000 starting out so I guess it's not as bad.

btw I was only kiding

but you should read this

Teachers' Pay

Teachers are paid too much! I'm fed up with teachers and their hefty salaries for only 9 months work! What we need here is a little perspective. If I had my way, I'd pay teachers babysitting wages.

That's right. Instead of paying these outrageous taxes, I'd give them $3.00 an hour. And, I'm only going to pay them for 5 hours, not planning time. That would be $15.00 a day. Each parent should pay $15.00 a day for these teachers to baby sit their children. Even if they have more than one child, it's still cheaper than private daycare.

Now how many children do they teach a day - maybe 20? That's $15.00 x 20 = 300.00 a day. But remember, they only work 180 days a year! I'm not going to pay them for all the vacations: $300.00 x 180 =$54,000. (Just a minute my calculator must need batteries.)

What will teachers say about those who have 10 years of experience and a master's degree? Well, maybe (just to be fair) they could get the minimum wage. We can round that off to about $6.00 an hour, times 5 hours, times 20 children. $6.00 x 5 x 20. That's $600 a day times 180 days. That's only $108,000.

Wait a minute! There is something wrong here.........

No offense, but I'd love a $28K salary. My first job out of college, which required a BA, paid $21K. DH and I both make less than $28K with BAs...

Starting salary with just a BA in our district is $40K. It takes 14 years to reach top pay which varies between $71K and $89K depending on graduate schooling and credits!

Starting salary here is around $26,000 with a BA.

I'm on my third straight snow day and I'm about ready to go back to school. Just about though.

Starting salary here is $32,000, after 15years $40,811, and after 27+ years $49,612 a masters is $2400 additionally-- not a whole lot of incentive to stay for 20+ years

Just an excerpt from an essay I teach entitled "America Skips School" by Benjamin Barber:

"We honor ambition, we reward greed, we celebrate materialism, we worship acquisitiveness, we cherish success, and we commercialize the classroom -- and then we bark at the young about the gentle arts of the spirit. . . . The children are onto this game. They know that if we really valued schooling, we'd pay teachers what we pay stockbrokers. . ."

Teachers: Hang in there! You are doing a worthy and noble thing, even when it seems no one knows how much you give of your "free" time. And you are making a difference in children's lives, although it will take them many years to figure that out!
