Personally I think a lot of 'normal' names are weird like Esther, Caitlin, Brandy and others. I chose to name my daughter Essence and a lot of people thought that was really weird but it has sort of grown on everyone and really fits my daughter.

It's up to each individual what to name their child and although it can be weird to hear certain names, they tend to grow on you if you know someone with that name. The only names I would never name a child (and I think people should not be allowed to name people like this) are rude names like 'rhymes with regina' OR names that could take away someones identity rather than give them one (like a number).

Oh, and a few years back some 'weird' names were Sky, Ocean, Neveah etc... and now as a teacher I see them cropping up all over the place!

I think normal depends on what is the norm in your area. Names like Chandler, Carson, McKenzie,Madison, Kyle, Tyler are odd/strange in my area. However, Essence, Imani,Nia, RaSheed, Tylique are common normal names.

No, there is a girl who is my age (I'm 28) and she became pregnant in her senior year. She always called her daughter "Boo-Boo" and I couldn't help but think she was reinforcing that her kid was a mistake or an accident. I hear people I don't know say it to their kids like in the grocery store or whatever...and again, I'm sure they don't mean to be calling their kids an accident or a mistake, but it just sounds so wrong to me!

My DH is from the south and a lot of people are nick-named Boo or Boo-Boo or they'll be talking to you and say Hey Boo, it has the same meaning as sweetie, dear or love. So maybe they're not meaning it as a mistake. It's all in how you interpret it I guess.
Oh and my cousin was always called ****oo and it WAS after Yogi bear's sidekick

I know a man in his 70's that's name is Richard Armstrong, but he goes by the nickname for Richard. The first time I met him I about died from trying to hold in my laughter.

I have one for you :

I worked at a school and the mom and dad had a bunch of kids:

James (dad's name)
Jamez
Jaymes
Ja-Mez

and since they ran out of variations of James, the youngest was was Semaj (backwards for James)

I have seen all types of interesting names recently:

Dzyre and Desre (desire and desiree-in the same class)
Aniah and Ania (A-nee-ah and A-nye-ah, same class)
Jasserrah and Jamirrah (same class)

Now other names that are common in other areas aren't very common here: I'd be tripping over Devons in other districts, but there is only one here.

I have hesitated posting about this, but it's driving me crazy. Our younger dd who's in preschool had a new little guy join her class. I said hi to all the kids when I went to pick her up. Now my hearing isn't the greatest, so I hope I heard this wrong, but the new little guy I said hi to, the teacher said his name is VEX. I hope she said BEX. Still a little strange, but not VEX. If it is Vex, I just think that's cruel. Like naming your child, "irritating" or "annoying". I'll let you guys know next week when I go back again.

Working in a hospital I love seeing some names, usually it is just an unfortunate last name and you can't begrudge a person that one.

In preschool I was good friends with a boy named Frosty Snow, and even back then I thought it was a dumb name.

On my pregnancy board there is a lady who claims to want to name her baby PB&J (yeah.... like the sandwich). WE have a couple other fun names flying around that I only hope get changed before the children come into this world. Namely people who are naming kids after objects, or famous criminals/serial killers, or names that sound way to close or rhyme with something really wrong (Like a little boy set to named Atard, he won't make it past 5th grade with his self esteem intact).

I worked one year at a summer camp and there was a young boy named Sunny Holiday.

I worked for a man named Seymour Wener. He was an old bachelor who loved to be out and about - usually with a much younger woman or two.

I heard this on the radio. I liked what one person said when they called in about it. They basically said that this wasn't just some random teenager who named their kid after Facebook, this was a family that was so grateful for what was done that they named their child after something that had true meaning in our lives. That is what we do all the time. How many people look up what a name means or name their children after something that is special to them? I do wonder what the Egyptian word is for Facebook, maybe it sounds very pretty.

The Arabic word for Facebook is Facebook (with an oo like the British would say rather than the American pronunciation.)

There are many different names throughout the world. Different cultures have different ideas of "normal" names. Honestly I don't think it's funny at all to pick on someones name. That's something children normally do, not adults. How boring would things be if everyone had the same common names?

I haven't run across too many crazy names yet in my school. There are definitely some "ethnic" names, but none that make me wonder why a parent would do that to their child.

The town where I grew up had a fairly influential family whose last name was Pop. They named their children Soda and Lolli. I thought that was just mean.

And Jenny, it's not about the kids, it's about the parents. We all know that kids are pretty cruel, that is why we wonder why parents would do this. I'm pretty sure I read a study somewhere that people with unique names are actually hired at a lower rate. I'll have to see if I can find it.

Actually, if you read most of these posts you will see that people are questioning the PARENTS and why they would do that to their child. No one is making fun of the kids but if you have to send out a birth announcement that phonetically spells out your child's name so your relatives know how you want it pronounced, just MAYBE you should think twice about naming your child that
