oh no! Forgot to order a sun pass!

I got totally ripped off by Thrifty. They charged me $52 for the SunPass. I was totally misled by the agent who told me that tolls could be as much as $5-6 piece (and I told her we were going straight from the airport to WDW and the parks...no where else). I think the actual value of the tolls was like $6 round trip. I was pretty miffed. Don't get duped. The cash lanes are very easy to spot. Just make sure to drive on the roads that have them...some don't. It was no problem at all to find them going from MCO to WDW.

All toll roads in the Orlando area have cash lanes. All mainline toll plazas in the area have an attendant lane to make change. Some exit ramps take cash in exact change only, always in multiples of $0.25.

There is one "express exit" I know of off the Turnpike to OBT and the Florida Mall that is electronic only; cash payers just need to go a little bit further to the main exit.

I'm considering using Dollar instead of Alamo but they have an obscene toll policy. Either pre-pay $10.49 per day (nuts) or pay a $15 per toll admin fee. Alamo's fee is only $3.95 per day of usage (though that's still ridiculous). Can I order a sun-pass transponder from New Jersey? I do travel to the Miami area about once a year so it may be worthwhile for me to order it.
Unless Dollar changed something recently you do not need to accept their toll policy. We traveled in July and just paid cash at the tolls. I put a plastic bag with $10 in singles and a roll of quarters in my carry on and before exciting the garage I gave it to my daughter so she could hand me the correct amount at each toll. I don't think we needed more than a total of $3 each way airport to resort/resort to airport.

I just bought the Sunpass transponder. While I don't go to Orlando frequently, I do end up down in Miami around once a year and in south Florida there are cashless areas. I'll make back the $20 cost for the transponder after about 2 visits or so. Plus now I get the slight discount on the tolls and it's one less thing to worry about.

Ugh. My lovely Thrifty agent told me that there were toll roads where cash wasn't accepted and that if I wound up on one of those roads without a SunPass I'd have to pay a big fine. She basically scared me into paying $52 to get one when it wasn't needed...at all, particularly going from MCO to WDW and back.

I don't know whether you think it's worth your time, but me being me, I would try to find a way to complain to their corporate office, and if that didn't work, I might even complain to the BBB.

I am going to write a complaint when I have the time over the holidays. Thanks for the info on the cash tolls! At least I know better for next time and won't be misled again. I also won't be using Thrifty again either.
