I think he may have bit though his lip. It isn't horrible and the bleeding has pretty much stopped.

Should I go to the ER? This is the 1st time something like this has happened to us. My mom says that it's fine and if DH were here I'm sure he'd say the same thing. Of course he's the guy who said I was fine when I stabbed myself through the hand and didn't need stitches.

Do they even stitch the inner mouth?

our ped doesn't have an after hours phone so there is no one I can call.

If the bleeding has stopped, he should be fine. Any cut in the mouth looks alot worse than it is. How old is your DS? Have him drink some cold water to clean it out. This also helps to stop the bleeding. (((HUGS))) It's never easy.

Ice pops! Anything in the head area bleeds like a son of a gun. Unless it's a huge gash, it will probably heal just fine.

he's 4. he's asking for a sandwich so I guess it can't be that bad. It does look like his teeth cut through the lower lip area.

He said rinsing with cold water made it worse but he's done it.

DH is at hockey and there was only a minute left in the game so hopefully I can catch him and he can talk to one of the Dr/trainers. I'm sure they know what to do for busted lips!

thanks

my son fell off the ladder to his bunk bed and almost bit completely through his lip - it stopped bleeding quickly an healed very fast - there was a bad bruise on the outside for about a week....

i don't think they really even stich the inside of the lip - my dh was at work and I was alone with the three kids, it was late at night & we were all in our PJs - so I calle a friend who is a nurse and she said if it had stopped bleeding to wait till morning... and it really was fine :)

i heard somewhere that most injuries inside your mouth heal extra quick, but that's just what i heard.. :listen:

so good luck with that :)

DH had called and the trainers said just to ice it. The urgent care is open for another hour if it gets any worse. I figure if he can eat a pb&j he can't be in too much pain!

the bleeding has stopped.

Thanks everyone, I tend to really freak about these things.

Does the hospital where the ER is have a "call-in" triage kind of help-line?

Maybe you could call and get some triage nurses to give you their opinion.

I know for a fact that they do stitch the insides and outsides of mouths - I've had some experience here.

Glad to hear the little guy is ok. :) They sure know how to worry us.

My ds was 2 when he did the same thing. No stiches and it stopped bleeding. Even if you do pursuade them to stich it, the stiches probably won't stay because of the moisture in the mouth. DS is 13 now and he still has this tiny white line where he bit through, but its inside his mouth and you really can't see it.

DD did fell of the couch and hit her mouth on the coffee table when she was about 18 months old. My memories of this are in slow motion :) She bit a huge gash in her tongue and underneath her lip (the little crease between the lip and chin). Back when the ER would actually give you advice over the phone, the nurse asked me if her tongue was still connected. I said yes and she told me it would be fine. Sure enough, a couple of hours later you couldn't tell she'd cut it. She's got a small scar on her face. But, that thing just bled like something out of a horror movie! I hope your little guy is feeling better.

If he did in fact bite through the lip, yes they do stitch on the outside only, for cosmetic purposes. DS was 18 months old when he fell off a rocking horse and bit through his lip, had three stitches on the outside, today (he's 6) there is no scar, but we were sent to a plastic surgeon, to ensure that he wouldn't have a scar.

I guess it depends if you are worried about a facial scar or not.
