So we went to put up our lovely christmas tree yesterday and after we get the thing up, we realize....We dont have our orniments any longer....Where oh where are our christmas orniments??? WE have absolutely NO clue!!! The only explination is that when we threw some things out this summer that they were accidently thrown out too. Soooo, heres the budget part, instead of going out and buying new orniments, something we dont have money to do, I have this wonderful idea. Why not use toys??? So our christmas tree is covered in 2 sleeping beauty dolls, a princess tiana, a repunzle, hannah montanna, elmo babbie, christmas barbie, tinker bell, a hsm doll, and a UT cheerleader barbie. IT also has a lot of little match box cars and those little tonka trucks with the faces on it. and a few other odds and ends on it. and to top it off, I found a Santa Mickey at a flea market not too long ago, and he is sitting high atop my tree....so I proudly made a bad situation pretty good and saved some money to boot!!!!! Not too bad for me!!!

LOL that's awesome. Life gave you lemons, you got out the tequila and salt! I applaud your creativity-- and maybe you have a new tradition. :goodvibes

Here are a few pics of it.....As you can see, the kiddos decorated it. All the trucks are in one place!!! LOL

Way to go! Two years ago we lost everything in a flood. I was able to grab a christmas tree from the freecycle list for our first christmas after, and it already had lights on it. That's all we had two years ago was a hand-me-down tree with lights, and we loved every moment of it! :rotfl:

Great idea! I did the same thing a few years ago-I decorate my bedroom tree (yes, I had 2 trees that year-it was a very good year!) with toys, etc. I used my Mickey santa hat for a tree topper. Now when we put up the fake tree in the loft, my DD10 decorates it with her toys. LPS, Beanies, etc. work great. The year I did the Disney tree in my room I made my own mickey garland. I used brown paper bags and folded them accordian style. I cut out the traditional mickey shape. (like the one on the HD paint chips) They were like mickey head paper dolls. Pretty cool. Nowadays you could use the HD paint samples mickeys for garland.

BTW, I loved laying in bed at night with the tree lights on. So pretty!

what a good idea!

A few years ago my husband and I celebrated our first married Chistmas. We couldn't afford ornaments, so I made origami butterflies and stars and put tem all over the tree. I already had the pack of origami paper (but I did run out and jut used whatever paper I had laying about), and bought a pack of hooks at the dollar store. It was wonderful! I still have those ornaments.

just wanted to say how cute your baby is and that my DD was born on 3/9/03!!!!

When we were younger DH and I moved almost every year (Graduate school) and we only owned what we could fit in our car.

We made our tree decorations every year. Our favorite was the number tree. Which was numbers cut out of construction paper and tied with colorful yarn. We eventually made equations. (geek alert).

I am sure your improvised tree decorations will become a fond memory for you too, and maybe even a tradition.

I applaud your creativity. I did this my first few Christmas's living on my own. I loved my tree as it represented me.

Several years ago, I got out my little tree and realized I didn't have the stand for it anymore. I had no idea where the little legs were. I tried putting it in several different containers but nothing worked until I put a jar of aquarium gravel in a sand pail. Regular ornaments just didn't look right on it so we raided the kids beach toys. My son's beach hat was the topper, their sunglasses, sand sifters, shovels and molds, even a pair of rarely worn tiny sized flip flops were all recruited. We had a great time doing it and the tree turned out great. Now we have a themed tree almost every year. They've been a lot of fun to do but the first one has been the most memorable for all of us. :santa:

We just moved in Oct and my DH put all my christmas stuff in storage at our old house. It's 1000 miles away and I can't get to it until spring. We're going to make the best of it this year and just have a tiny tree with my WDW Christmas pins and a few ornaments that didn't get packed with the Christmas stuff last year.

That's a really cute tree. I love mickey sitting on the top. I can't wait till we get our tree, maybe tomorrow or next week. I have so many ornaments, it's crazy. Of course I inherited all of my g'mothers, and all the lights. But I have a weak spot for 75% off after Christmas clearance. We also never pay more than 10$ for a live tree. (thankfully, I wouldn't have the slightest idea on where to store the thing.)

We usually get a mini rosemary tree, and we decorate it with small keychains. A few years back, Disney released a set of toy figures from the christmas carol. And when I was searching out the last of the collection I found K-Mart had a keychain box set of all the figures. So that's what goes on the little tree. And then we set up the big figures on the table.

Maybe you can get a couple boxes of tinsel to make the tree sparkle.

Ohh and while you're going home-made, maybe you can show your kids how to make a popcorn garland. They'd probably get a big kick out of it, and toss on some candy canes. I can usually find mickey candy canes at the dollar store.

on the homemade idea, how about construction paper chains. Loved to make them as a kid. Might look good on the tree.

Love it!! So creative. For home made ornaments you can buy, inexpensively, craft sticks and paint them white, glue them together in a snowflake pattern and put on sequins for color. Total cost would be about $15 and you could make about 50 ornaments.

Love it!

DH and I for our first Christmas bought all our ornaments at Dollar Tree (still have them and hung them on our tree last weekend!). And then he made an angel for the top. Out of a 20 oz Mt. Dew bottle. He cut the bottom off and added paper wings. It was so ugly it was precious!

The Christmas before that I was living with a good friend and we decorated our tree with homemade ornaments. When our friends came over we had them make a paper doll of themselves. It was great! My friend also made a paper doll of our favorite local weatherman and Jesse Ventura (he had just been elected MN governor.) Those were some of my favorite trees!

Having a curious toddler for the past few years, I don't have a lot of fancy ornaments left, so this year we are making our own. Family Fun has a bunch of cute ideas on the website, and a few of them use recycled materials, so I might just convince the kids to have a "green" Christmas. teehee...

This is a really fun thread. Every year I make some kind of handmade ornament to add to my tree and give as gifts. The handmade ones that have been given to me are my real treasures, although I have tons of ornaments. It makes me want to leave them all packed up this year and just have homemade.

I went over to the DISign board and found some christmas mickey heads. Im going to print them out and glue them on cardstock and cut them out and hang them on the tree too.

This is the best tree ever....

Kari would love to see pictures... I told her to read the post, and as she read it her jaw drop and her eyes widen, like it was Christmas day and she was opening a video game.
