OK ladies.. and gentlemen.. with long hair...

How do you wear your hair when you run? I have always relied on the ponytail - but lately my hair is getting thick again - so when I run with my ponytail my hair gets all ratty and nasty... and its really hard to get my brush thru it!! But when I try to put it in a bun, it always slips out, and I end up with a ponytail by the end of the run!! ARGH!!

So those of you with long hair, how do you wear it running??

Thanks :thumbsup2

Mine is long, and medium thickness. I just wear it in a regular ponytail. But my trick is that it holds its 'smoothness' better if I straighten it before a long run or race. Then it stays more or less smooth, because of the straightening and the product. If I don't do this, and it's humid out, I end up with a big dreadlock.
I would braid it, but it feels like a long rope slapping me in the back and I don't like that.
I know it doesn't make sense to "fix your hair" before your run, but sometimes it gets you past that gross hair by the end.

I don't run, but I have VERY thick hair that was also very long. I would just put it back in a pony tail when I worked out and it never got messed up and tangled. I was able to "finger comb" my hair after my work out. If your hair is getting too tangled, then maybe you need to braid it.

I have long hair that is not super think, so a ponytail works for me. A buddy of mine has longer, thicker hair than I do, and she prefers to french braid it into pigtails.

I dutch braid mine to one side which gets the fringe out of the way and then pull all the rest, with braid included, into a messy bun with regular ponytail bands. One to hold the bulk of it together and then a second (sometimes a third!) to hold it in tightly. This way I don't have a head band to get sweaty and slip back while I run, but my hair is totally off my face. :thumbsup2

It sounds really dorky, but there are tons of youtube videos of hair tutorials and how to wear your hair while you work out. I sort of took some techniques from those and did what works for me!

Have you tried the rubber bands w/ the non-slip on the underside? I think Goode makes them. It's a clear rubber feeling type of thing, works for me. Also, they have huge rubber band thingys that work as a head band but they're a huge oval shape and work as a headband for the under and sides of your hair as well. Hope that makes sense. The have non-slip on the underside as well and b/w the 2, the hold up pretty well for me.

Thank you all so much!! I will try some of the ideas and find out what will work best for me!!

Thanks so much! I appreciate all your help :thumbsup2

I use the no slip pony holders and wear my pony extra high on my head to keep it from smacking me on the neck.

I do 1 of 2 things....

1- put in a bun & bobby pin the heck out of it
2- put in a ponytail and then clip the pony tail up with a hair clip. Looks weird but gets the job done.

I have long, thick, wavy hair. All the hair stylists are alway like omg you have such great hair..yeah, yeah, yeah, easy for them to say, they don't have to control it on a daily basis :lmao:

I find if i keep my hair in a ponytail, it actually gets heavy on my head and gives me a headache. If i use the silicone hair bands, and wrap it in a bun, it usually stays put. When I have a fresh cut with my layers, I also use a good no slip headband (like sweaty bandz) to hold back the layers that will inevitably slip out.

I would also suggest looking into the keratin treatments. For those of us who are constantly on the run (pun intended heh) it does make life so much easier. Just something to at least consider!

My hair is long, thick and wavy/curly so its heavy and makes for a BIG pony tail. I have the same problem with it getting knotted and nasty after a run, the constant swishing back and forth is horrible for tangles and is just terribly annoying :headache:

If I'm going for a short 3-4 mile run then I put it in a high pony and on the last pass through the hair band I only pull the pony tail half way through so all the hair stays in a pile up on my head. If I have a longer run or have intervals on the schedule, then Pocahontas braids with a headband is the only thing that keeps my hair from annoying me. Otherwise its just too heavy on my head. I'll usually smooth my hair with some coconut oil and then braid it so I get a bit of a deep conditioning treatment while I'm running :thumbsup2

I do a ponytail and work through the ends with my brush before I release it. If I don't brush out the ponytail first, then my hair is one huge mess and it takes longer to brush out the ends :headache:

Any ideas or suggestions for short hair??

Just above the shoulder, one length "bob" cut. To short for a cute pony tail ?? I have been just wearing a baseball hat when I run.

My hair is about halfway down my back. I spray it with leave-in conditioner or a hair sunscreen and just start braiding it at the nape of my neck and securing the end with a ponytail holder. Then I slip on a moisture wicking headband (like a Bondi Band) with half of it covering my forehead and my visor on top of that (much easier to just wash the Bondi Band instead of the visor every time). With the way I run, my hair "swings" and that drives me crazy when it's in a ponytail. With braiding it starting at the nape, it doesn't move.

When I had shorter hair, I did two short pigtails coming out the sides/top of my head (which I wasn't crazy about, so most of the time I just kept a hat on).

I have long thin (but lots of it) hair and usually use a pony tail, but on the last "pull through" I leave just the ends in at the base of the hair tie then barrette (long clip type) the loop of ponytail to the back of my head. I can't stand to have hair on my neck when I'm sweaty or have it flop in my face for Cross Fit class so this works for all my workouts. (I do make a bun for the Princess to I can stick my running tiara into it- and it stays wonderfully)

I also wear a bondi band for all my workouts which helps with the "fly aways".

Long, wavy, frizzy, and thick, yet fine individual strands here. Therefore, those headbands slip right out since my strands are so fine. I use a regular barette for my bangs, and then put the rest in a low ponytail, like right along the neckline. Then I use a supertight scrunchie to make a bun. Because my hair is so thick and the scrunchie is so tight, it actually stays put! But the furthest I've gone with this new creation is only 4 miles. ;) We shall see if it stays for more, but it's still really solid afterwards. Before the bun, I would just double up the ponytail and that works too, but I get the frizzy uncontrollable look - which is just what you're asking how to avoid!! Good luck!

I have really long hair and work hard to keep my ends protected to keep them from splitting. Before I run, I put some hair butter on my ends (it's a combination of cocoa butter and jojoba and almond oils, but anything moisturizing would be good and protective!). Then I gather my hair in a secure ponytail on top of my head. Right in the middle like some strange horn. Right where the tip of my cone would be if I was a conehead. This is imperative for balance. If my hair is at all towards the back then it will swing and move and shift and fall out while I'm running. THEN I do a quick wrap bun, or if I have time on my hands I will make a long braid and THEN bun. Nothing fancy. Then I secure this across the ponytail holder with either one spin pin, or two spin pins.

This looks pretty stupid, like a door knob on top of my head. This is absolutely unequivocally the most secure style I have found for running with long hair. I also tried sock buns on top of my head but the extra added bulk and shifting was too irritating. It is very hot here and I run outside past lots of trees and bushes so I cannot run when I feel distracted by my hair getting damaged. With a braid or ponytail it swings so much with my gait and I cannot deal with feeling my hair ends smacking around on my back, worrying about the friction and splits, not to mention the hair getting caught in branches. Nope, not for me!

Spin pins are glorious for anyone with long hair and I have around five of them. My hair is of average thickness, and it's a little longer than my waist.
