I'm going to chime in and try to encourage you to stay at a Disney hotel. I can understand that upon first appearance, it seems like it would be considerably more expensive to stay at Disney, but there are probably some unforseen cost you need to consider.
Parking - about $9 a day I believe. So, right there, you are going to spend about $90 just on parking for the days you are in the park. Also, you have to consider gas. Commuting back and forth from your off site hotel, for 12 days will easily burn through a full tank of gas. Disney is HUGE. Also, if you are planning to fly and rent a car when you get there, forget about it. It's most certainly not going to be cheap.
You can get a room at a Disney value resort (All Stars or POP) for about $79 a night, rack rate (its possible you can find a discount somewhere). And, if you are staying on Disney property, you have full access to all Disney transportation, which can bring you to any of the parks, water parks, resorts, or Downtown Disney. To me, the sheer convience of not having to get in my car and drive after a long day at Disney is worth any amount. Also, if you are bringing your own car, you can still drive to the parks if you want, but staying at a Disney resort allows you to park for free. Also, and probably the biggest bennefit is that by staying at a Disney resort, you never have to break the magic. Once again, its the worst thing being submersed in the magic of Disney World, and then leaving and being thrown back into reality every night.
It's definatly something to consider. Unless you are getting a room for something like... $30 a night, I think its well worth the time and money to book a Disney resort room.
Also, Park Hopper is a MUST. When you are going to be there that long, you will most definatly want to park hop. To me, that is an essential to any Disney trip.
