It drives me absolutely crazy when people say, "I am very picky"...
geez....LIVE DANGEROUSLY!!!! Stop wearing "picky" like a badge and try something outside the box.

Bring on the flames.

Yes! I so agree! Especially when parents say, 'my kids are picky and won't eat anything but chicken fingers and pizza'. Really? Is it because that's all they've ever been fed? Disney is a great place to explore new kinds of food!

I'll proudly take the flames with you! Bring it! :lmao:

No flames from me. I'm in TOTAL agreement!

We had a rule when we went to WDW last time. Everyone has to try something new every day. I knew I would have no problems with this since I love to try new things but I was wondering if the kids would follow the rule. To my surprise they did try something new even if it was a bite of something off my plate. My DD12 discovered she just loves smoked salmon, DD9 tried bread pudding...her new fav and my son have a new love of hummus. I am so glad that we had this rule and we are planning on doing it again this trip. I mean how does anyone know that they only like a few things? Have they tried everything. Unless you are allergic the worst thing that can happen is you didn't like it and won't try it again.

ITA. That whole "MY kid is so picky. They won't eat anything" bit just doesn't fly with me. In the vast majority of cases they are picky b/c they are allowed to be. With the exception of some kind of serious sesory disorder, a kid that is hungry enouigh will eat what is put in front of them. I don't make seperate meals for anyone in my house. never have, never will. DD5 wil eat just about anything put in front of her and knows better than to ask for a special plate. Our rule is that if you don't like it you don't have to eat it, but I am not making something else, no arugments. It is just not happening.

LOL! I won't flame either. We make ADRs at places that sound good to us (me and DH mostly) or fun for all, and my kids get to order whatever is on the kids menu if there is one, or they eat what's being served ('Ohana for example). If they don't eat, they don't eat -- just like being at home for dinner!

My kids aren't that adventurous either - but I really don't sweat it - it's vacation and I know they won't starve, and if they're starving, they'll decide to be less picky!

edited: I see princessmom and I were posting similar things at the same time! :-)

You all don't even know the MEANING of the word "picky" until you've met my husband and father in law. It so pathetic!! I refuse to allow my children to turn into them. I try to make the plain Jane things hubby likes, but it got to a point it was ridiculous. Now, it's eat what I'm making or fend for yourself.

At Disney, I made ADRs at a variety of places. He always gets the hamburger. blech. LOL

No flames from me!

No flaming here....I was just about to write this exact response. I am not a short order cook. What gets me is when I hear wives tell stories of how picky their husbands are. WHAT? A grown man???? :scared1:

EDIT: Should have completely read all the responses. Sorry PP, but you're DH is spoiled. :) I commend you for not letting your kiddos fall in to that trap.

My brother is in his 20's and won't even eat spaghetti with sauce on it

I have a college-aged friend who refuses to eat at a restaurant that doesn't serve some variety of chicken fingers. Needless to say, she and I don't dine together very often. ;)

I'm with you, OP. Certainly no flames here.

We had a rule when our sons were small - they had to try 2 or 3 bites of something new and then if they really didn't like it they didn't have to eat it. And no saying it looked "yucky". I usually didn't repeat something they didn't like but if it was something their dad and I liked I might make it once in a while and they could always make themselves a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or cereal. No short order cook here. Every once in a while we would go out for dinner and they would surprise me as to what they would order.

Oh and when I say I'm picky that doesn't mean I only eat nuggets with a saucer full of ketchup either. Just picky in general. I don't eat anything and everything just cause it's there.

Ugh, I was on a sports team in college, and once a year when we traveled we were able to stop at this one really nice restaurant. Most of us ordered the filet mignon, and this one guy would not order anything because there were not chicken fingers or peanut butter and jelly on the menu. And I am not exaggerating either, he seriously only liked two foods. That is probably the most extreme case of pickiness I have ever seen.

OP.....I almost started this exact thread last week, but chickend out! :lmao:

No flames from me.

I can understand wanting to offer your family members their favorite things while on vacation, but it's a great opportunity to try new things too. What really gets me is when the "only thing they will eat" catagory is solely made up of fried wads of meat and cheese laden starch receptacles. Hope they are chomping down lots of Flinstone vitamins!

I have to agree with you, and not just in reference to WDW dining, but in general. Of course we all have certain foods we prefer over others. If there is some something you don't like, just don't eat it. No need to make a scence about it. When adults "accounce" that they are picky, it comes off as very childish to me and makes me feel like they expect me to go out of my way to accommodate them.

That said, I have a picky daughter and it is totally my fault. I got suckered in by the long lists of food you aren't supposed to give a kids, and only gave her thing I thought were "safe." The result is that now she won't try anything new. I am trying very hard to break her of it.

I admit that there are multiple reservations we made solely because of reviews declaring the food "too weird." I just ... you're a grown adult and you think *lamb* is too exotic and strange to try?

My mom let me be picky until I was old enough to speak with logically and understand rules ... maybe when I was 4? And after that the rule was I had to eat what was on the plate and I had to try at least a bite of something new if we were out.

All I can say is that I'm totally with you. It drives me nuts. My MIL has allowed my DS6 to "take part" in her picky eating issues but that stuff doesn't fly at my house. He's really a very good eater but I hate it when he tries to throw an "it's got mushrooms in it" fit one day but is fine the next. It's become just something to say to try to get PB&J or just skip dinner and go straight for dessert. Needless to say it doesn't work.
