Oh god, why do my teeth hurt so bad with a sinus headache????

For 3 days now, I've had a sinus headache, and it bothers my teeth. Last night, I woke up at 2 am and my upper right teeth were throbbing!!!!!!!! I put whiskey on cotton balls and laid them against my teeth, but it didn't work. I took another sinus pill and that did the trick. It's only on my right side, and that's the only side of the nose that's plugged up. I don't have a fever, so I don't think I need abx.

But the pain, THE PAIN!!!

Ugh, when does this end?

There is nerve that runs from those teeth past one of the sinus cavities under your cheek bone. If the cavity is inflamed, pressure is put on the nerve. Conversely, if the teeth are inflamed, the sinus can be irrated. I learned this the hard way. My MD had to give a shot of antibiotics before my DDS could work on the tooth. I had fewer sinus problems after the tooth was fixed.

Also, some folks have very low sinus cavities, which can actually run down into the upper jaw.

A couple of years ago I went to my dentist because of a toothache. He took an x-ray and said "Your teeth are fine but you have one hack of a sinus infection." He could see some of my sinus cavity on the x-ray and it was packed full of "gunk". Went to the doc, got an antibiotic, and in a couple of weeks I was a new woman!!!

Oooh, that's the worst! One time I had a really bad sinus infection that made all my upper teeth hurt. If the sinuses are making your teeth hurt that bad, then you probably have an infection and need an antibiotic. Hope you feel better soon! Keep taking the Sudafed for congestion and ibuprofen for pain.

Vivi.. DW MeanLaureen has trouble with her sinuses and when it gets really bad and causes her teeth to hurt she takes a heating pad and slips it inside the pillowcase on her pillow in the bed and lays the part of her face that is in pain on it and takes a short nap. Usually within an hour of medium heat she feels much better.

Ouch! I personally would take Claritin for congestion (less side effects than Sudafed), ibuprofen for pain, and hold an ice pack against my forehead.

If you regularly get sinus headaches, you might want to get a prescription for a nasal steroid. I went from multi-day sinus headaches every month or two to a sinus headache maybe once a year or so.

A trick that a pharmacist taught me (pre-nasal steroids): buy some children's Afrin nose drops (not sure they're still available, but other nose drops will do. He felt adult Afrin was too strong and caused too much of a rebound, and I agree). Drip the drops into your nose, then immediately hang your head over the side of your bed "as if you were trying to find the gum you stuck underneath your bed frame." Roll your head around to distribute the nose drops while your are still in the "finding the gum position."

This will distribute the medication much better than nasal spray. It worked pretty well for me.

Heard a horror story once about a local dentist who did a root canal on his wife, which didn't work, because she really had a sinus infection. Ouch!
