Those are typically done within scheduled maintenance windows. That's not what happens with Disney sites and apps.

True. Outages happen, but rarely for a Disney-sized company. The difference is that Disney doesn't lose customers over it.

Believe it or not, they still might*. Disney has been around a long time. Likely the current systems are a hodge podge of systems that have elements that could be 20 or 30 years old. I imagine updates like the one we are seeing are attempts to move at least some pieces to newer technology, whether it's upgrading a database version or moving to new servers or updating the OS, etc. It's a challenging job to integrate legacy systems and make it look "new".

*to be clear, I have no idea if Disney IT is full of the best and the brightest or completely incompetent. Just providing my view as some who has worked in software for large corporations.

It's just strange why a huge multi-billion company like Disney would have so many IT problems. There are always problems with everything online.

Considering they don't pay anywhere close to industry norm, the answer would be a resounding no, they don't have the best IT people. They use H1-B visas to pay immigrants on work visas. Google it, you may be surprised how Disney treated their American employees.
