Oh for goodness sake!

Well, I would like to post something positive as my latest posts have been pretty depressing. Unfortunately, I am unable to do so at this point in time because I need to RANT!

Those of you on fb might know this already. I got my email from school admissions today to tell me that my youngest DD had NOT got a reception place at her chosen school. Although we are not in the priority area by 0.3 of a mile, her older sister is at the school. What on earth do they expect me to do? I cannot pick up and drop off 2 children at the same time at 2 different schools! They are about 1.5 miles apart!

I have lodged an appeal and also found out that she is 7th on the waiting list. There are 5 children ahead of her who didn't get a place despite living in the priority area and one child who is in the same situation as us but lives slightly closer.

My stress levels are at breaking point with everything that is going on.

My DH is a governor for the local junior school and he said that they are accepting every child who applied even though it takes them over their intake number and up to the maximum allowed per class - there will be some big classes (38 I think) for the new Y3.

I thought that children with a sibling already in a school were placed higher up the list than those without, even if the others are in the catchment area (so I assume the 5 children in the catchment area already have a sibling there too?).

Good luck with your appeal and fingers crossed that some of the offered places aren't accepted.

You're having such a rotten run of luck at the moment, better things must be around the corner for you and your family.

Children with siblings at the school are below children in the priority area. We are just out of the priority area, so I think we are lower down still. I have heard that they have offered 61 places instead of 60 because there are twins who could not be separated. I am hoping that this is a good sign for us. As far as I am aware, if they accept more than 30 in a class, by law they need another adult in the class and can therefor (in theory) take on extra children.

If they've taken on an extra child over the maximum of 30 due to twins, then the cost of the extra teacher is funded from the council which does sound like good news as it would be wasteful to have an extra teacher for just 1 child! Is the school large enough to accommadate extra children? Some of the schools in our area (Hamphshire) have been told to create an extra class (going from 3 classes to 4). Our local infant school did that for a few years but has now gone back to just 3 classes. When my DD was in the infants she was in a 3 class intake for YR which changed to a 4 class system for Y1 (it was lovely because the class sizes were reduced accordingly).

I'm really hoping that this means they will take extra children. So many mums are in the same position as me in my area! I'm lucky to live closest to the priority area. Just had confirmation that they offered places for my preferred school to 0.645 and we live 0.665! So we only just missed out.

Sorry to hear that's has happen to you it has happened to me so no how you feel my oldest was going into year 2 and I wanted a place for my son which is didn't get i was number 31 we did appeal and still didn't get him in so had to move my oldest to another school as like someone said they need another teacher or Ta but when we did appeal for ours they let it go to 31 as the other lady appealing her daughter had dwarfism so they let her in and didint get another helper in the class we weren't happy as 2 of us had siblings and she never but nothing could be done I get my daughters letter fri to see if she is in same school and it's catholic so am down the list again gonna be a long week

Hope you manage to sort it out and the school can accommodate for you. if you arnt happy with your choice of school they have given I would ring and see what else is available in your area I did that and kept on ringing and complaining

It does and I think if they let your child in then Should be siblings first cause it does disrupt the sibling, i also think they need to build some more schools or make the ones that are not as good back in line with the others then perhaps we may pick schools in our catchment I live near a school but not at all keen

hope you sort it are you appealing? I would keep waiting as you never no not everyone may except a place I got a call that they had a place the day my daughter started her other school but didn't take it

just wanted to add never lose hope. My friend wanted her child to go to a school that could deal with his special needs (Autism spectrum) but the education authority said he could go to the catchment secondary as he had managed mainstream juniors okay (he wasn't statemented). The point was he had only just managed it. She actually had to go to a special hearing in Winchester and was totally out of her depth but was determined to fight for what she believed her son needed. She won her battle, along with several other parents who were also fighting for places. She said that the toilets needed refurbishing so that these extra children could go to the school (she also got free transport for him as this school isn't particularly local and she had a younger child in the village school and, like you, couldn't be in two places at once.)

My DD didn't get allocated the primary school we wanted. The yr we applied you only got one choice and the allocated school wasn't suitable at all.

We ended up paying for private school. It has all worked out but wasn't even on my radar until allocation.

Was such a stressful time. I vividly remember going to a kids birthday party the day after and all the other mums had got their choice and just wanting to hide in the corner.

Yes, a lot of the Mums at my DD's preschool have got their children in. It seems so silly that children with siblings are 5th on the criteria list. Just waiting to hear about the appeal now - although I don't hold out much hope.

Oh, I'm so sorry...I realy hope things work out for you....you are due for some good luck

I'm so lucky that we don't have this problem where I live. My DD's school is very small, so they except everyone. Her class only has 25 children and thats with yr1 and 2.
